Bandaranaike International Airport

Bandaranaike International Airport is twenty-two miles from Colombo in the nearby suburb of Katunayake. It primarily handles international flights, while a second airport in the region handles domestic flights. More than thirty airlines, including Qatar Airways, Korean Air, and Emirates, offer flights, although many of the airlines only offer flights to one or two destinations, and you can book these flights through ebookers.

Parking at the Airport

To meet the needs of passengers flying from Colombo, the airport has multiple parking areas. The terminal car park has 400 spaces and charges 150 rupees for cars and 230 rupees for larger vehicles. The remote car park is further from the terminal, but it charges a lower rate of 50 to 100 rupees, and it has special spaces available for motorcycles.

Get to Colombo

You don't need to worry about tracking down a parking spot when you take a taxi to the airport. You will pay around 2,640 rupees from Colombo, and you can find a taxi with air conditioning for about 300 rupees more. Some travellers might prefer taking one of the local buses to the airport. These buses drop passengers off at a bus stop near the terminal, and you can grab a shuttle bus that will take you to the terminal. The shuttle buses pick up passengers from the bus stop every fifteen minutes.

Airport Dining Choices

You can find a wide range of dining choices at the airport. Sri Lankan Airlines runs several restaurants offering international dishes and regional dishes in the departure lobby. The transit area is home to a small bar that provides travellers with alcoholic drinks and a coffee bar with a selection of local and well-known coffees. The transit area also has a snack bar, which offers faster service than some of the other restaurants, ensuring that you don't miss your flight from Colombo because of slow service.

Flying into Kathmandu

Flights to Kathmandu arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport, which is located within the city limits. The airport is the only international airport in Nepal and has two passenger terminals. Several airlines provide flights to Tribhuvan International Airport, including China Eastern Airlines, FlyDubai, Gulf Air, and Malaysia Airlines. Search ebookers to find low-cost flights to Kathmandu.

Transportation from the Airport

You'll find numerous transportation options at the airport. Local taxicabs line up outside the passenger terminals to transport passengers to their final destination. The fare for local cabs costs approximately 400 rupees. You can reserve a prepaid taxi at the taxi stand to the right of the baggage claim area. Prepaid taxis are more expensive, but they offer additional safety. Alternatively, you can take the bus into town or prearrange transportation with your hotel.

Climate in Kathmandu

The weather in Kathmandu is warm throughout the summer; average temperatures range between 19°C and 28°C. However, the summer is the worst time to travel to Kathmandu because the city gets monsoon rainfall between May and September. Autumn and spring are the best times to plan your trip. During these times, the average temperature ranges from 8°C to 28°C and you'll avoid massive amounts of rain.

Highlights and Attractions

One of the city's main attractions is the Garden of Dreams. The neoclassical historic garden is located in the middle of the city and features walking paths, a sunken flower garden, and a large pond. You should also visit Durbar Square, which is filled with monuments and temples. The city is also home to a variety of religious sites, including Kumari Chowak, Changu Narayan, Pashupatinath, and Swayambhunath Temple. Other local attractions include Hanuman Dhoka Square, the National Botanical Gardens, and the National Museum.
