Larnaca International Airport
Larnaca may not be the largest city in Cyprus, but it boasts the largest airport, which is one of only two international airports in the country. It is located approximately 4 miles southwest of the central area of Larnaca, so it won't take long to get into the city once you arrive. The airport has two terminals, but only one is used for commercial airliners. The other is for VIPs like visiting heads of state or private planes. There is an automated exchange machine and three banks in case you need to exchange your currency to euros, the official currency of Cyprus.
Ground Transportation in Larnaca
The A3 motorway is used to get to and from Cyprus International Airport. The most popular way is by taxi, with a taxi office open on site 24 hours a day. The ride takes around 15 minutes to the central business district and 20 minutes to the beachfront resorts, and will cost between €7 and €15, depending on how far you need to go. When you are booking your flight, be aware that taxi fares are higher at night during the day, so a daytime arrival will save you money.
If nearby Limassol is your destination, the Kapnos Airport Shuttle will get you there. If your final destination is Nicosia, the Kapnos Airport Shuttle is your best bet. If you will need a car for more than just getting to your hotel, there are car hire services available at the arrival area, including Budget, Europcar, Astra, Sixt and Petsas.
Larnaca Weather
The weather in Larnaca is mostly warm year round, with the summer months of July and August being the hottest. Temperatures regularly reach between 35°C and 40°C during those months, so tourists should wear light-coloured clothing in breathable fabrics. November to March marks the rainy season, when storms happen frequently, making the local resorts a hard sell. Visitors should avoid this season unless you don't want to be on the beach and just want to take in the cultural attractions. April, May and June are cooler than the hotter months and have little to no rain, so they are the best times to travel to Larnaca.
What to Do in Larnaca
Because it is a seaside city, Larnaca has many water activities like snorkelling, diving and wreckage expeditions, including the infamous Zenobia Ferry wreck site. The Ancient Kition has some of the oldest temples and buildings in the country, with some going back as far as the 13th century BC Bird watchers will want to visit the salt lake, where over 80 species of birds may be on display except in July and August, when the heat dries the lake up, leaving a salty crust on the earth until the rainy season refills it.
