Planning a Trip to Stockholm

Book cheap flights to Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, with help from ebookers, and explore an amazing mix of cultural and natural delights. Built upon 14 separate islands, the city takes visitors on a wild ride of museums, shops and trendy tourist spots, while providing a lush, relaxing environment in which to fully enjoy your time away.

Stockholm Arlanda Airport

While there are two airports close to Stockholm, commercial travellers are more likely to land at Stockholm Arlanda Airport, roughly 26 miles outside the city. It's the largest airport in Sweden, and one of the largest amongst the Nordic countries.

Local Transportation Information

Rental cars are available through Budget, Hertz, Europcar and Alamo on the airport grounds. A number of buses will take you from the airport to central Stockholm for around 99 SEK, roughly $15. Most bus companies allow four children to travel with each paying adult for free. There is also an express train at the airport that goes to Stockholm for 260 SEK, around £25, and takes just 20 minutes to reach the capital's centre. Taxis cost around 500 SEK, or £50, and make the trip in 45 minutes to an hour.

The Best Time to Travel

Summer is the most popular time for visits to Stockholm, with temperatures hovering near 20°C. During June, summer daylight hours can last nearly all day and night, a trait some travellers find endearing and others have a hard time dealing with. Because there are more tourists, it is harder to find low-fare deals, but extended hours and activities make it worth the expense. Winter temperatures drop into the negatives. While a jacket can keep your comfortable during the coldest summer moments, serious winter gear is needed in December and January.

Popular Attractions and Events in Stockholm

Stockholm has a huge variety to offer travellers, from old world traditions to new wave fringe culture, there is something found for every taste within the confines of the city. The summer is host to three popular holidays. Nationaldag, National Day, in June celebrates Sweden's adoption of their modern constitution. Midsommarafton, or Midsummer Eve, hails the longest day of the year. This is a big deal in Sweden and is celebrated with family activities and games, including dances around a maypole. Stockholm Pride Week in July and August however has nothing to do with the country's past. A modern and enthusiastic embracing of homosexual rights, discussions and entertainment culminate with a massive parade at the end of the week. The city sites are a conundrum as well, teetering between the capital's medieval foundation at Gamla Stan and the Vasa Museum, a preserved 17th Century ship covered in intricate carvings to the Gröna Lund amusement park, sporting 32 coasters and family rides. Meanwhile, a vast assortment of museums freckle the city with ancient artefacts and modern art. Winter is generally considered the off-season because of the lack of daylight hours and the cold weather, although there are a few festivals and many indoor attractions and outdoor activities to make the trip worth your while.

Use ebookers to find cheap flights to Stockholm, as well as discounts on lodging and transportation. Make the most of this unique and inspiring Nordic capital by exploring the mix of Old World and modern tourist attractions available, as well as the seasonal events that keep things interesting for everyone coming to Sweden.
