This resort is exactly what you read about it....the beach is absolutely beautiful! The resort is older and nothing special, but rooms are clean. All inclusive is OK since food is not that good. Grill by pool has great jerk chicken! For the price, great caribbean trip.

Hotel is just OK, it has a few miles on it and I must say that the reception staff were splendid-couldn't be nicer. Food is pretty good for a value focussed stay I have no complaints. However, the beach is as fine as anywhere in the world--soft beautiful sand and lush scenery---For the money, it can't be beat.

What a blast

  • Quianna52
  • 22 Mar 2012
We really, really enjoyed Hawksbill. It is exactly what we were looking for. It is true, as other reviews have stated, that this is a more laid back resort then some of the others. If that is what you are looking for, then this is the place. It is a 3 star resort, older but very nice. One restaurant for breakfast and dinner and a different one for lunch but the variety of food was excellent as was the food itself. Entertainment every night at dinner. This not a big hotel type place. We stayed in a bungalow on the beach and it was incredible. We walked 10 yards out our front door and we were on a beautiful beach . It is amazing how many people here are repeat visitors. Many, many people from Great Britain. We went on several great side trips. Catamaran, ATV's, swim with Stingrays, shopping and snorkeling. Great beaches, very good food, nice accomodations and very laid back. For us, the perfect vacation. Antigua itself is a very interesting island with very friendly people and an incredibly interesting history. Definitely take some time to get off the beach and see the island. Travel is safe anywhere. Do not miss the Sunday night barbecue at Shirley Heights. We are planning a return trip for next year.

Don't Spend More than $100

  • Steve
  • 27 Nov 2010
We scored a $100 rate, but saw this property offered everywhere else for $240/night. Given we only spent $100, I was OK with this place. Had I spend $240 ... or even $150, I would have been furious. This is a good Best Western. The "staff" are basically non-existent. Postage stamp TV in the room and it did not even work. Called the front desk at 9:00 a.m. and no one answered. This is NOT a three star. Two stars all the way. Also, if you're not sailing, forget about English Harbor. If you travel to Antigua, pay the big bucks and stay at the Galley Bay or similar property -- where we went after the first night (Paradise). Otherwise go to Aruba, Puerto Rico or Jamaica I'm not sure Antiqua has good midrange ($200 - 300/night) properties.

Great and friendly staff

  • David
  • 12 Feb 2008
I can't say enough good things about the staff at Coconut Beach. They are just fantastic and make you feel welcome at all times. The hotel is a very good value for the money. The food is good - not great, the rooms are adequate - I don't spend that much time in the room anyway. The beach is small and can get quite rough. The atmosphere is very easy going with a somewhat older, very friendly, and mostly British clientele. This was our third visit to Antigua. We previously stayed at Coco's and at Long Bay Beach Hotel - both of which had better food and beach. No real bad complaints about Coconut Beach and if we'd never stayed at those 2 we'd have probably had a higher opinion of it. However Coconut Beach is significantly less expensive than either Coco's or Long Bay.

could do better

  • Babu
  • 25 Jun 2007
This was our first stay. This seems like a place for younger couples. They do not have a fitness center which is a negative. The food could be better and in the back yard a persistant bad smell exsisted. Every time you walked back to your room this foul odor filled your lungs. Staff was good but rude at times. They have a good taxi service. Laundary service was difficult to access. Had to wash our clothes in the bathtub and dry them in our rooms. Person at the front desk could be more helpful. Room service does not excsist. Overall an average location best suited for younger couples without children.

Antigua

  • 18 Feb 2010
Delighful setting, large room, very quiet and small number of guests. Room to restuarant requires a lift in the hotel car - not always timely. One evening the staff were slightly overwhelmed as all the guests decided to eat in the hotel at the same time. This is a very small complaint in relation to the consideration and effeciency of the staff for the rest of our four day stay. Desk staff went out of their way to accomodate us. WE will return, but next time we will ask for a mosquito net.

The Hotel over time, has been re-done to good effect. The service was friendly and the atmosphere relaxed. The hotel itself is in two levels, requiring transportation up and down a hill which was promptly provided. Although the hotel could use better internet and phone services, the main purpose is to relax and the hotel works.

Honeymoon Perfection

  • CDMSRD
  • 3 Aug 2011
This place was everything we could have asked for on our honeymoon. No obnoxious kids/teens, lots of PRIVACY, a quiet and relaxing atmosphere, lots of perfect settings for romance, gorgeous and clean beaches, and truly all inclusive with the most courteous attendants we've had... all staff addressed us using our surnames and congratulated us on our honeymoon, even if we hadn't met them yet, Even the head chef came to our table! What was nice was many offered to take pictures of the two of us whenever they saw I had my camera! Our accomodations were charming, clean, and well stocked. The food was beyond words, truly gormet three times a day. We had a great time meeting other couples, mostly wealthy buisnessmen from England on "holiday" with thier wives, and other honeymooners. Do not expect this resort to be for the "family" but for adults looking for a private, romantic, serene, and tasteful getaway that makes you feel like a celebrity while you are there. And no, not everyone there was over 50 as another reviewer posted, we were both under 30.

Property like a dream world, cove suites are 5star accommodations in my book and the staff are all top notch. I cannot say enough that you will not want to leave this "paradise" in the true sense of the word. I gave value only a slightly lower than perfect rating only because the food was a little expensive and mostly avg . All and all I would absolutely recommend this hotel and I am currently counting down the days until I can go back.

If you are looking for soft sandy beaches and crystal clear water, this isn't the place for you. The bay side of the hotel is what you would expect... a murky bay. Not enjoyable, many people complaining of jelly fish stings. The ocean side has a strong current and is consistently strewn with black seaweed. Food is okay for buffet style. Overall not impressed.

Not what I was hoping for...

We have been to each end of the Caribbean, so the color and feel of the sand and the clarity of the ocean really matter us. When we arrived at the St. James Club, it seemed outdated. The rooms were bit 80's, cracked ceiling, if-y air conditioner... but worst of all was the bed. If you have a bad back, please bring your own mattress support because you'll need it. While I was ok with the room, all that matter to me was dipping my toes in the warm ocean. The ocean side of the resort has a very strong current (also very choppy) and is full of non-stop seaweed. If you have young kids like myself you will opt for the bay side. The bay side is.. well a bay. Though it has some brown sand, the further you go into the bay the muddier the bottom. Don't expect to snorkel or find any exotic fish on the bay side. The water is only clear until about 6 feet in... then very murky. As far as the food and service, I was happier with that. The main style of food is buffet, which again with small children and picky eaters makes meal time much more manageable. The food itself is good, not great. But above what is to be expected of buffet style food. They also make a point to switch of the style/theme of food every day which is nice. Overall I would not return to the resort. When I make the effort of traveling 4+ hours with kids under the age of 2, I dream of crystal clear waters and white powder sand... not so much a murky bay.

Family of four (2 children 9 and 5). We just came back from our vacation on tuesday. We had a wonderful time. The resort is gorgeous. Very large bedroom with balcony with views of the sea. Very quiet and relaxing. The only thing missing: not a lot of entertainment at night. The food is really good. The staff is helpful and very nice. We would definitely return.

Our Honeymoon

  • 26 Mar 2011
This was the 5th all inclusive hotel we have been to and the first Sandals. The hotel, grounds, and beach are beautiful! I can't get over the beach. The food was good, but we were blown away by food in Cabo San Lucas and Riviera Maya, so we expected more. For some reason any fruit was never ripe..strange. Some tips: Beware of the reservation system!! It is horrible to have to deal with when you pay so much. If you dont get down to the lobby or call at exactly 8:30 am when the reservations open, you wont get in. Plus they only let you book for that day and 48hrs in advance. What a hassle. Also, very few umbrellas and the sun is HOT! If you don't claim pool chairs by 8:00am (the latest) you wont get any, or any in the shade. The staff was ok. Some were very polite, while others got to you when they felt like it. Other places we have been the staff is much more professional and they hustle! Drinks were good and they had lots of fun specialty drinks. All said and done, of course we had a nice time, but we are dying to go back to The Royal in Cancun. Don't know if we will come back here.

Over all a good trip. Food was well prepared and presented; drinks were good, service was great and personel were always friendly. A couple times the servers were a little unhappy, but for the most part all were accommodating. We would go back and more than likely upgrade from our deluxe package to the concierge level or above.

On an island without cars, guests move about easily in golf carts and bicycles along the island?s palm-shaded paths. Where sand, sun and revelry meet the postcard perfect white sands of Jumby Bays main beach are lined with thatched-roofs bohios and hammocks strung between stately palms. The Beach Bar provides convenient seaside services while the nearby Beach Pavilion, with its cabana-lined pool and tennis courts, is a gentle hub of the island. On the Atlantic side, Pasture Bay Beach is the islands most isolated and untamed seascape and a natural preserve for the endangered Hawksbill Turtle. Watersports, deep-sea fishing trips, scuba diving and snorkeling are just a few if the leisure choices at Jumby Bay. When civilization beckons, a short catamaran ride takes guests to mainland Antigua where shopping, casinos, Historical sites and golf await. The resort of Jumby Bay is located on Long Island, a 300-acre private retreat just off the coast of Antigua in the British West Indies.

Guests can also find stress relief in the onsite fitness center and non-motorized water sports or traveling to one of the two golf courses or nearby floodlit tennis courts or glass-backed squash courts. Hermitage Bay is about 40 minutes from the airport, 30 minutes from the capital of St. John's and just 10 minutes away from the Jolly Harbour marina complex that offers shops, restaurants, golf and tennis. While the hotel is close enough to accommodate day trips into town or excursions around the island, there is private dirt road that separates Hermitage Bay from the rest of the world. The serene bay laid the foundation for our guiding principles, including heartfelt concern for the guests, staff and environment, healthy living, and restoration of mind, body and soul. If guests are seeking an authentic tropical spa escape, Hermitage Bay is the definition of easy, island living.

Great all-inclusive resort

  • Matt
  • 31 Oct 2010
The location of the resort is pretty remote, which is great if that is what you are looking for. From the resort, you cannot see any other buildings. There are only 25 suites so there won't be many other guests there either. The beach is pretty nice and the staff did a great job catering to what ever you needed while there. They were quick to come out with towels and cold bottled water and came by frequently in the afternoon with fruit and any kind of drink you may want. The rooms were nice as well. If you are very shy, you may not like the outdoor shower. Although there is a towel rack that hides you from other guests, they could hear you. Nevertheless, there are not many other guests there so it shouldn't be an issue for most. All meals are included. There is only one restaurant at the resort, but it is excellent. It is a sit-down type restaurant. They offer a variety of choices at each meal and the menu changes daily. We were there for 7 days and did not have the same meal twice. The types of food ranged from fresh pasta to fresh local fish to vegetarian dishes. It was quite impressive. During our stay there had been some rain, which led to many mosquitos. This is a problem on the whole island, not just here. Also, at night, there are lots of crickets, big crickets, that make quite a lot of noise. If you are a light sleeper, I suggest some earplugs. Again, this is typical of the whole island. This is a great place for a romantic getaway. Relaxing, remote, and comfortable. The staff goes out of their way to make sure you have everything you need.
