Short getaway

Though Tomas mostly clouded our long weekend, we very much enjoyed our 5 day/4 night getaway. A great place to kick back and relax. Due to threat of Tomas' rain and our short time anyway, we never left the grounds -- but never felt trapped either. There was enough to do, and enjoyed the food and drinks. We did upgrade to the newer honeymoon rooms after the first night, and welcomed that change for the relatively modest cost increase. Certainly could have stayed longer, and if so, we would have done a couple of island excursions.

Prepaid transfer to/from airport unnecessary and expensive. Taxis are common, and low-$20s US one way. Unless island exploring, USD are fine, no need for ECD$.

Hotel accommodations terrible

The request was for two beds - received one bed. Cold water no hot water. Hotel staff did not help with bags at the end of the trip. Food non exciting - sold as choice of all inclusive and menu - menu only offered one night. overall very disappointing trip would not return

Hawksbill RETREAT

The comments listed from other travelers were all pretty accurate. Location beautiful. Rooms, average and you need the AC. Food average, bit of a fight to keep the birds away. Staff most good some not. Beaches rocky Nite life below average. A quiet restful retreat.

A Stress-Free Paradise!

A fabulous experience is every way. The high points: our room that overlooked the Caribbean(we heard the waves breaking as we went to sleep), four beautiful beaches, great breakfasts with made to order omelettes, a friendly, hospitable staff that really seemed to care that we were enjoying ourselves.

You should do the Segway tour of Fort James that you can book online. It's lots of fun and well worth it.

A CLASSIC THROWBACK PARIDISE

WE HAVE STAYED AT HAWKSBILL TWICE AND HAVE HAD THE SAME EXPERIENCE BOTH TRIPS: WE LOVED IT. THE PROPERTY IS BEAUTIFUL AND QUITE WITHOUT ALL THE MODERN ELECTRONICS AND GADGETRY(NO CRAZY PARTIES OR DRUNKEN SINGLE MINGLES EITHER). THE STAFF ARE VERY FRIENDLY IN THIER POLITE RESERVED FASHION AND SERVICE IS GENERALLY GOOD UNTIL IT GETS LATE IT FALLS OFF A BIT(WE THINK MAYBE THEY WORK TOO MUCH).AS FOR THE FOOD ...IT IS OK. THERE IS ALWAYS MORE THAN ENOUGH TO EAT WITH A BUFFET OR SERVED COURSES BUT THE QUALITY IS UP AND DOWN. THIS BEING SAID THEY ARNT CHARGING FOR 5 STAR CUISINE SO OVER ALL PEOPLE SEEMED SATISFIED. ALSO I THINK THEY TEND TO CATER TO A BRITISH TASTE SO SOME THINGS ARE BLAND ON PURPOSE.SPECIFICLY THE CHICKEN ROITI WAS THE BEST MEAL OF THE WEEK AND SEVERAL SIDES STOLE THE SHOW SUCH AS EDDO,SCALLOPED POTATOES,AND BOILED GREEN BANANAS

Quiet Getaway

I was looking for a quiet getaway for just myself and I found it. Hawksbill has four beautiful beaches to choose from and you often find yourself with the beach all to yourself. The staff is super-accomodating and always remembers your name and favorite beverage. Upon arrival, I was greeted with a cold towel and beverage of my choice and told I was being upgraded! To my suprise, I was moved to a private cottage on Honeymoon cove with air conditioning and the most spectacular ocean view. I fell asleep to the sound the the waves crashing under my door. Although the resort is all-inclusive, do not expect a party atomsphere you might find at other resorts. The party here stops about 11PM or sooner. However, I went to chill out and could not have asked for a better location. The resort is almost 50 years old, but is wonderfully maintained and keeps a really sweet retro vibe. I never felt out of place as a single traveller, I would go back in a heartbeat!

Loved this Resort

I booked Hawksbill by REX Resorts - all inclusive as a quick getaway from a crazy year and frigid NJ temperatures. I am a single woman, 40's who travelled by herself in January 09. The resort was perfect for me because it was quiet, beautiful, well kept and friendly. I believe I was upgraded to a bungalow by the sea which was a simple room but amazing. Floor-to-ceiling windows just had screens and shutters that were adjustable. What it offered was the ability to listen to the sea crash all day/night. The room was also about 30 steps to the ocean with a convenient grassy area out front where numerous lounge chairs were set up. My neighboring vacationers were older (65+) international couples who stopped for a chat and then went about their business. Breakfast was the highlight of the day....omlettes made to order, pancakes made to order, fried eggs, fruit/yogurt and loads of other stuff. Lunch was OK and dinner was just OK as well. I did find the food suprisingly fresh and well cooked...but just average and not much selection. The only thing I was bothered by were the little lizards that found their way into the room. Eeek. So for me it was perfect, had everything I needed without leaving for 4 days which was my goal. If you're sinlge and looking for nightlife at this resort...definitely not a good choice....carpets pretty much roll up around 9pm. Oh...the other problem were the beds. Mine was as hard as a rock....but you get used to it. Would be truely heaven if they changed them out for more comfortable mattresses. I don't think you can make a bad choice as far as room location. The bungalow of course was a real treat, but the hotel section that faced the ocean had balconies and you really weren't that far away from the sea. There were a few young families but not many. The elders loved the kids...but not much in the way of family activities to keep everyone busy. If your goal is to see the Island, have lots of activities and non-stop fun...you can probably find something better suited. If your goal is to travel to a quiet relaxing place and rejuvenate, then this is a good choice. If I needed another vacation where I wanted to get away from it all...I would rebook this hotel.
