Great location, but very hard to find without exact address..... air conditioning did not work. Room adequate but bed small and tired. The hotel is struggling to stay up with the times.

Couple's budget Sydney visit
Masonic club rooms are rented out as a boutique hotel. Room appointments are OK. Bathroom is a retrofit with inadequate sliding door. Room was very small. At-large appointments in the hotel are funky, old-style wood paneling, etc. Nice bar, very authentic, though with starchy dress rules. Downtown location, near parks, Circular Quay, buses, trains, shopping, theatres, etc., is unbeatable.

A Sydney Bargain
We were very pleased with the Castlereagh -- convenient location, 15-minute walk from the Sydney Central Station, 20-minute walk to the Opera House, and just 1.5 blocks from the CityLink St. James station if you'rve leaving from here for the airport ($16AUD to the International terminal). They allowed us to store our luggage off the front desk on the day of our departure, as we were not leaving for the US until the afternoon. Comparing prices to other nearby properties, this is a true bargain. Everything was spotlessly clean. The rooms are smaller than usual, but well within our comfort range. If you're a stay-at-the-finest type, this isn't your hotel. But if you're on a budget, and want a comfortable, clean and convenient place, this is it!

Great location
Had a nice stay. Rooms are small but well kept in this 1920s era hotel. Great location near Hyde Park and central business district, transportation hubs.

Sole travel
The best part of the hotel for me was a free washer and drier on each floor and they even provide laundry soup which is great. The room was simple and small but just want you needed. I would stay again if I wanted a budget hotel.

European styled in old building
It's a clean room with very high ceiling and a functional bathroom in a renovated 100 year old building ; it reminded me of a room in a London hotel. A safe, WiFi, or breakfast are extra cost. The main feature is the excellent location next to Sydney Tower and the relative low room rate.

Great location
Room was very small but served its purpose. could of been a little cleaner. Had only three encounters with staff, one told me that using the airport shuttle at 5:15 am would not get me to the airport on time best to take a taxi @ 55 to 60 AUD. Made me think that he had an arrangement with the Taxi company. The other front desk person Denis booked us for the 5:15 and we made it to the airport with time to spare.

Great location, tiny room.
The location and the lobby were unbeatable for the price. However, the room was extremely tiny and the bed took up almost all of the walking space in the room. The bathroom was just big enough to turn around. The elevators in the hotel also appeared to break down a few times while we were there for 4 nights. All in all, the place was clean though so for the price, I would most likely stay there again, I just can't say that I'd really go out of my way to recommend it to someone.

4 star building, 2 star rooms
Old converted building. Bathroom tiny, noisy plumbing can hear water in adjacent rooms; only one window looking out of always-noisy airshaft, so no view and must be kept closed. Decent climate control. Decent wifi, which room card says must be paid for but they gave it to me free. Staff ranges from friendly to surly. Decent breakfast in stately dining room; did not try dinner. A bit hard to find as entrance is small and major sign says it is a masonic lodge. Location great for upscale shopping; 20 minute walk to Circular Quay.

Short walk from hotel
Bistro Papillion, on Clarence Street, about 10 minute walk. Classic French home cooking very well done with nice staff. Book ahead on busy nights.
