The Really Ugly!
The Menzies Sydney Hotel was aA huge disappointment. Avoid staying at this hotel if at all possible. Some of the following items were reasons why I feel it is important to recommend NOT staying at this hotel: 1. My imital request for a reservation was for a room with 2 beds (size didn't matter). upon check-in I was advised they didn't have a room available with 2 beds (I was traveling with my 21 year old son). I asked if a roll-away bed was available, and eventually they agreed to put one in the room. 2. Upon our return back to the hotel the same day, but later on that evening I decided to stop by the front desk to ask a question. It was at that time I was informed it was against hotel policy to put a second bed in our room due to the size of the room (fire hazard). So, I asked (again) to put us in a larger room with 2 beds. Evenutally, they did. 3. When we entered the "bigger" room, I smelt a horrible odor. I knew immediately it was mold. When I entered the bathroom I smelled the shower curtain and confirmed the smell indeed was coming from the molded shower curtain. 4. I contacted the front desk to demank a "clearner" room. Eventually, we got another room. I found "hair" on the bathroom floor. The room was dark due to poor lightening. The TV was less than 12 inches. The remote control for the TV was the worse I've ever seen (in poor condition). 5. The maid left a wet towel on my bed instead of taking it. 6. The fee for inroom WIFI is AUD 11 (close to USD12) for the first hour. But, if you go to the lobby, you get 30 mins ONLY of free WIFI. 7. Breakfast is AUD 30/person. The food was horrible! There is no cook to make fresh eggs, so I doubt the scramble eggs they put on the buffet were made fresh (they looked and tasted like powdered eggs). 8. Hotel had no information availabe for New Years Eve. I had to search myself although I asked the staff for assistance. 9. No Airport Link schedules were made available although the hotel is right across the street from the metro to the Airport. We ended missing the stop on the train because when I asked someone at the ticket window in the metro, he forgot to mention I needed to change trains.

Disappointing
Our room had not been cleaned properly when we checked in (sticky glass marks on at least 3 surfaces) so we went out for an hour to give them the opportunity to sort it out. On our return, nothing had been done so we were moved to a "better room" - I would hate to see worse. If I hadn't paid in advance for the room, I would have left. Two bottles on water were left on the bedside tables which I assumed were complimentary - had I drunk it, we would have been charged $8 per bottle! Don't mind paying over the odds, but this was a complete rip off and made us very wary of the charges for anything else. The rooms were last decorated in the 1980s and the furniture was way past its best. Find somewhere else to stay.

close but wanting
The Menzies is in the perfect location to a new visitor to Sydney. It is literally across the street from a nice train station and park that connects to the airport while still being in the middle of the city. The staff are pleasant though i didn't get the wake up call the last day. The hotel is quite old. By itself that is not negative but the impact is visible. WIFI is ridiculously expensive for any hotel in the world. That alone makes the hotel questionable as a choice for any business traveler.

This is not a 4 star hotel
I stayed one night. I was checked into a "superior" room.(Not even close) It was smoking. I asked for non-smoking. My next room was older and had dirty carpet, the tv remot didn't work, and the hair dryer died. After looking on line I paid $300 dollars and what fealt like a standard room was going for $170. The service was standard when they had time but the employees were too busy to help sufficiently. I was very disappointed and would not stay at this hotel chain again without extensive positive feedback.

Two Day Visit to Sidney
Good location and opportunities around this hotel for good restaurants & food courts. Circular Quay nearby and many good shops on the way to the Quay However, the rooms were very small and needed some TLC. Cost vs Value -- below par.

The room we stayed in looked old
The room we stayed in looked old and need maintenance. Everything worked OK...but it did not havfe the appearance of a good hotel. The windows were dirty with faded tinting. Most of the hotel was overdue for a paint job. The location was fantastic, close to everything, but no views. I would consider staying here again, but only if it was at a very good price.

The hotel's website says 4 stars
The hotel's website says 4 stars AAA rating, i would say they should be MAXIMUM 3 stars! Room was clean but the interior was old and very worn down, the bathroom was old and small. The air-conditioning was horrible. The AC was noisy and did not stop blowing in cold air (even when off). With two small kids did have to put the temperature up to 28 C for a bearable environment for sleeping. Even so my older boy got sick just after the 1st night. Re "indoor heated pool", COME ON FOLKS, the pool water was freezing cold and the changing rooms along with the Gym and the pool area are again pretty worn down, long overdue for refurbishing. Everything was rusty and dirty. We paid $300 for a night for a twin room. I don't think that we got value for this money. BUT the 500ml water waiting for you in the room was priced 4 stars, $7.50 each! As well as breakfast costs $30 per person! Shamefully expensive! The only thing we did appreciate was the location. There must be a better hotel in the area!

The Menzies, Sydney
We stayed two nights at the Menzies at the end of a 10-day trip to Australia. The Menzies is well situated in Sydney, close to Darling Harbour and the Central Quay. Lots of good restaurants within easy walking distance. However, the hotel needs updating. The lobby is deceptively up-to-date while the guest rooms are small and a bit tired-looking. The bathroom was tiny and poorly lit, with one bath towel per person (no hand towels). The hotel also seemed understaffed, with considerable waits on line at the front desk. The bellman doubled as the concierge and, although helpful, was not as well informed about restaurants, etc. nearby. We give the hotel 3.5 stars, compared with other hotels we have visited, and while the price was reasonable, we likely would stay elsewhere on our next visit to Sydney.

Holiday and Conference
My trip to Sydney was for fun and a little work for eight days. The Menzies was a great location for me for my conference, short bus ride, and easy walks around the CBD to get to Darling Harbour and The Rocks area. So, I would say that the location of this hotel is superb. As far as the hotel itself, I felt that it could use a little more. Sounds silly, but I thought options for clothes washing were minimal. They do have a clothing pick up but you may not get clothes back till the next day. I also did not enjoy that the Sporters bar downstairs was not open on Saturday night. The staff at times were not very helpful. Some were and some weren't.

My experience at The Menzies
My experience at The Menzies was very disappointing. I was attending a function at The Menzies and due to delays at check-in was unable to check-in before my function. I was very surprised with the lack of quality of the room I was given. It was utilitarian at best with 1970s dark wooden furniture. The room I had been given without explanation was for a disabled guest, the bathroom had a lone standing toilet, lone standing single basin and a small glass shelf, this was almost entirely taken up with the complimentary shampoo and conditioner! I had nowhere to place my toiletries, the hair dryer cord only just reached to where the plain single mirror hung over the single sink! I was only able to get TEPID (at best) water from the shower. As an able bodied person I feel it was almost an insult to offer disabled guests such inferior quality and was very upset I was given no warning or explanation. A wholly unsatisfactory experience.
