Good central location within walking distance of the central station. Friendly but useless staff. Lovely Eagle street pier was easily within walking distance and they didn't mention it. Miniscule room for the price. Mattress was shot. HVAC did not work. Look elsewhere

New and hip but still working things out

The rooms are stylish and hip, but quite small. The only major problem we had is that the air ventilation system did not work. We were told by the night clerk that this often happened during the winter months when the outside temperature is deemed "too cool" by the rooftop sensor to permit you to turn on the air conditioning in your own room. Since the windows are hermetically sealed, your only option is to turn on the heat or to sit in stuffy air. There was no fan available; the machine simply did not permit you to take any other action. When contacted, the night clerk was apologetic and said that this was a common complaint but that there was nothing that could be done. She said the management was already aware of the matter. When I spoke to the manager the next morning, he seemed to have no idea that this was a common issue faced by many previous guests, and did not appear to believe me until another couple standing nearby overheard and insisted that they too experienced the same problem. The manager did little to rectify the situation.

Small rooms. Good location for

Small rooms. Good location for the price. Service in the restaurant for breakfast was so bad I will never stay at this hotel again. Staff were beyond rude and the table service was appauling. Shame on this hotel for employing rude staff! Asked for an in-room breakfast menu, but only got the evening dinner menu delivered. Regrettably I went to the dining room for the most aweful and rude service I have ever experienced.

Although this is a nice newly

Although this is a nice newly renovated hotel, I wasn't too happy with my stay here. The rooms were very very small and there was absolutely no information in the rooms for visitors to Brisbane. We arrived fairly late in the afternoon after a fair bit of travelling and were exhausted. All we wanted to do was eat and sleep but there was no room service, no info in the room about eating places close by not even a street map. We walked around the area close to the hotel late at night and only found one pizza place open. The reception staff weren't very helpful either.

Pretty Good

Reviewers have noted that the rooms at The Portal are quite small. I upgraded to a Prestige King and did fine by myself. It would have been hard to share the room with a second person unless we were REALLY compatible. Other reviewers have accurately pointed out that the bathroom is poorly lit. I took a hand mirror along and put on my makeup by daylight by standing near the patio door. The front desk staff was helpful and friendly, also as noted by others. The best thing about this room was that it was so quiet! I heard nothing from any other rooms and did not hear the elevator even though my room was adjacent to the shaft. Two things annoyed me: 1. The closet had a refrigerator in it, so clothes that were hanging did not have adequate room to hang straight. Instead, longer skirts and jackets laid on the top of the refrigerator. (And there were no drawers.) 2. The shower smelled like cat urine, apparently coming from the drain. On some days the smell wafted throughout the room. I am 50-50 about whether I would stay here again.

Brisbane Portal Hotel

I was in Brisbane to watch the RiverFire fireworks. The hotel is a small, clean and modern boutique place very convenient to everything. There is a small walk up a hill, but nothing too exerting. My room was small. But was fine for one person. The deal included breakfast, which was delicious. The staff were friendly and very helpful.

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

On the weekend you can find parking on the street to save the $25 they charge at the hotel.
