We visited Adelaide specifically for the purpose of spending time with family members. We wanted a central location that provided opportunities to dine out and shop and sightsee. The hotel was centrally located for these purposes. However, Adelaide unlike other capital cities in Australia, does not trade on all holiday shopping days and many of the shops and restaurants were not open and if it wasn't for family knowing where to go, and driving us out of the city, it would have been difficult to get a nice meal. We were not inclined to eat at the hotel because it was filthy and a cooking oil based smell permeated the entire lobby and downstairs area where one had to enter and exit the lounge, dining area, bar and street. It was rank and sickening. Room service attendants were not polite or helpful and the bar closed very early most nights due to a lack of patrons. The hotel staff were not welcoming when we checked in, and one would have at least expected a good will wish as we checked out but nothing was said and they did not enquire as to whether we enjoyed our stay or not. They simply weren't interested. The decore in the rooms was dated. This particular hotel is still using woollen blankets, the quality of which were very poor as evidenced by the worn areas, and one questioned whether they were ever dry-cleaned or washed. The same for the dated bedspreads. The sheets were changed regularly and fresh towels were freely available. The floor was filthy in the lobby, highly stained and needed to be vacuumed and shampooed, and the same was apparent in our room. Upon entering our room we noticed there were bits of peanuts on the floor which were not consumed by us, and hair and fluff, also not ours. We don't believe the room was vacuumed once during our stay, and there was a pungent mould odour coming from the main bathroom. In all fairness we give credit to the helpful housekeeping staff who did their best to present the rooms well considering they were about 15 years behind other hotels. Would we consider staying there again? Absolutely not. Would we recommend the hotel? Absolutely not. Value for money, no. This hotel was rated above what one would consider appropriate for it's presentation inspite of it's central location. It deserves a 1 star rating.

Shopping tip:
Short walk from hotel
Rundle Mall was only a short walk away and when all the shops were trading there was a good selection and variety of stores to buy from/shop in. For the most part, store attendants were helpful and pleasant and the merchandise was of good quality and price.

Never again, not even for free
This was the second time I fell for their advertisement and low price, don't be fooled by the entrance. Lugging my luggage thru a mouse maze of staircases and hallway's to be put it into a closet with a antiquated bathroom. I travel for a living and this place is a dump and firetrap.

First time Aussies
Not bad. Pretty convenient location.
This hotel was just two blocks away from the Rundle Mall and busses/tram, which made it easy to get around. The entrance is on an alley, which is a little interesting, and not really scary but businesses do put their garbage cans there. Walk down the alley and take a left and you're right at a 24-hour pancake house, which is very old with ratty furniture, but the food is plentiful and good (surprisingly decent and inexpensive [for Australia!] cappucinos, too!]. The in-house restaurant specializes in seafood, apparently, and the lobby (to me) constantly smelled of fried fish. Luckily, the smell did not travel up to our room (on the 4th floor). Our room was quiet with a big bed and big shower; we had a mini-fridge that didn't seem to be working all that well and a microwave, which was nice (if any local stores would have sold microwave popcorn! haha!). Upon recommendation from the employee working the desk the first day we got there, we rented ourselves a car and planned a trip to the Barossa Valley. I don't have a wine tour to compare it to, but I'd highly recommend taking your own trip--we had a great time! We went to the Wolf Blass (amazing!), Peter Lehmann (awesome and huge cheese/bread/flatbread/chutney/prosciutto, etc. plate for $25), Langmeil, and Burge Family Wineries; we were pleased with all of them. There are guest laundry facilities in the basement and they even supply the soap, which is nice. $2 to wash and $1 to dry, but the drying cycle is only 30 minutes long so you'll probably have to run it twice. The 'sister property,' which is also a Grand Chancellor and is only a couple blocks away, looks much nicer and is on a more active street, but I don't know the price comparison...

For the price I thought it would have been better. Room was freezing and even after advising staff there was no way of warming up the room. Would not stay there again.

I do not think that it warrants
I do not think that it warrants the four stars that it claims, but is a good hotel in a great location. Reastaurant closed Sunday (except Breakfast) - a time when it is difficult to find anywhere to eat in downtown Adelaide.

Room was dusty and smelled of cigarette smoke. Pillow made me sneeze so I used a towel as a pillow. Room was supposed to be tidied daily but nothing was done. Wasn't asked for (website) paperwork on checking in. Should be a lower star rating

Excellent option at the price
Fine. Hotel is clean, comfortable and spacious enough. Absence of wireless internet and exorbitant price for broadband is a significant shortcoming.
