OK place
Location is ok, 10-20 mins walk to down town, 5 mins to Victoria market and 5 mins to Southern Cross Station and airport shuttle. Rooms are clean but a little old. Fridge and some basic kitchen ware in each room was good. A/C and flat screen TV with ~10 channels. Internet is $6/half hour, so better use free wifi at some fast food restaurant or cafe in the city. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable about the surroundings.

Money-saving tip:
Short walk from hotel
There's free wifi at most Hungry jack's (there's one at Souther Cross Station) and many Cafe's around town, e.g. one cafe on the east side of Victoria Market.

Nice hotel in a quiet location
Stayed for 2 nights just before the Easter long weekend. I chose the hotel due to the proximity to Festival Hall where I was attending a music concert. Found the hotel to be more than sufficient for my needs. The only drawback is the location as it is out of the way of most of the main Melbourne city. Even so, the Flagstaff station is 5 minutes walk and Southern Cross 10 minutes.

Short walk from hotel
The Carron hotel is a close walk by at the top of Spencer St. Found they made a really nice steak, and had a reasonable beer selection.

You get what you pay for
We recently stayed for 2 nights at the Flagstaff - it was absolutely fine and what you'd expect for the price. No frills but the bed was comfortable, the shower was good, the fridge was useful and the room was spacious. The rooms on the first floor where we were open straight out on to the shared courtyard - nice to have somewhere to sit outside but makes the room feel a bit open to everything. Wi-fi access is available in the rooms priced by the hour or the day. We were willing to pay for some time but when we tried to do this no payment page came up and we found we were connected anyway. The connection came and went but we managed to do what we needed for free - not convinced that the connection would have been any better if we'd paid. It's not exactly in the centre of things but the free bus and tram round the city run close to the hotel which helps. And the shuttle bus from the airport dropped us at the door when we arrived. All in all a very reasonable experience.

Dining tip:
Short walk from hotel
Victoria Market just up the road is well worth a visit - we bought fruit and snacks to keep in our room and the sandwiches we bought for lunch turned out to be the best lunch out we had on our whole 3 week trip - both in terms of quality, taste and value.

Liiked this hotel. Rooms were basic but place was quiet and staff very helpful. A small bar and food outlet in the foyer. Excellent location close to lots of nice restaurants and cafes. Close to Markets and Spencer Street bus/train & shopping and Docklands. A great for being in the city, I'll stay here again

The 'budget old rooms' are exactly
The 'budget old rooms' are exactly that - the rooms are old and a bit dingy but the beds are fine and the amenities are ok. Location is convenient to Southern Cross Station for country trains or connection to the airport. I would be a little wary of leaving valuables in the room whilst you were out - nothing scary, just the rooms aren't that secure.
