First time in Rio
I really enjoyed the Pestana. The hotel has been nicely renovated with very modern details. The location, if you're looking to stay on Copacabana beach, is ideal. The next time I go to Rio I will likely stay closer to Ipanema as that is where I spent most of my time. However, not knowing much about exactly where to stay when I booked the trip, I don't think I could have done better. If you can negotiate a rate that includes wifi I recommend it. I did not, and was surprised that the cost was $35/day. However, in the end I was glad I didn't pay for wifi every day because there is SO much to see outside of the hotel. The immediate area is safe, particularly during the day. I never felt unsafe around the hotel, Copacabana, Ipanema, etc. There is a decent breakfast buffet every morning, but I recommend you get out and explore all the amazing bakeries (Guerin is nearby, do not miss it) and cafes. The hotel staff was always readily available and eager to make my stay enjoyable. Most even spoke fluent English which was a huge help when asking advice on what to do, where to go and how to get there. Rio is magical. If you stay at the Pestana it will only add to the magic you will experience.

not for a working trip. Vacation maybe.
Room was very small, Internet keep going down for hours at a time and was slow overall. Took average 4 to 5 minutes to get the elev. They had one shut down the 6 days I was there. The free breakfast was the same everyday and bad.

Nice location on Copacabana Beach
The room was very small, it was supposed to be a King bed but was really only a Queen. However the room had a fantastic view of Sugar loaf. Breakfast was included and offered lots of choices. The rooftop pool is fantastic.

Blah!!!
The thing the Petana has going for it is the Staff. They are excellent. The hotel itself really needs updating. Small rooms. Best view is from an ocean front room or at the pool. Certainly not worth the money in my opinion.

Try the churrsaria less than 2 blocks away and the restaurant just out front was good too. Good food there and they didn't bother me when I was done eating. If you want Caiperinhas (spelling) just walk across to the beach and sit by the shack there for half the price of the hotel.

Great place but could improve a little
The location is fantastic, right on the beach and across from the night-time souvenir market. The hotel is beautiful and clean. The staff is helpful and speaks English, including the bell boys. The shortage of irons was a problem. It's not one per room. I almost could not attend a wedding in a proper outfit. Also, no clock was provided. Plan ahead.

Long walk from hotel
Garota de Ipanema is not too far. The cab ride is quick but it is also an enjoyable long walk on the beach. This is the restaurant where Tom Jobim saw the girl and wrote the song: "The girl from Ipanema"

A dump with a view
Great location and views from the upper floors, but the rooms are shabby with old, cheap furniture and bad carpeting. My room had a hole in one wall big enough for a person to walk through barely covered over with a piece of plywood...And that was the good room(!)--the one I got after I very politely refused to stay in a room that had wet carpet and stank. In sum, nice lobby and rooftop pool, but the rooms reminded me of places I stayed in when I was in college and had no money.
