Bug Avoidance except Zoo
Please Clean the ROOM, buyer beware!
Room was very large. Grounds look good. But only one poor staff person who we felt sorry for because she was the only one on duty. garbage in room from previous guests...begs the question were the beds changed? We forgot our microscope and a couple of drinks diminished the worries but did not change the bed. Also there were bugs, could not identify all of them as we forgot our biology texts at home.

Our Poor Visit
The hotel web site does not display the age of these units or the lack of maintannace and up keep. Our room was an obvious conversion from a personal room to a hotel, the room it self had a good amount of room in it but was completely run down. It was it bad need of paint and repairs. The curtains blocked plywood in the window and the handle on the garden entrance was broken. We had a neve ending supply of bugs in our room, everywhere. The building is just old and not sealed well at all. The dinning room was never even set up or staffed when we were there. There were no cups to drink with in the room but there was plates and silverware? It is located in the middle of residental homes so no where else to visit by foot. The staff was helpful but was responsible for many jobs at once like bartender, frontdesk, operator, and bell hop. We would never stay here again, and if we could have got our money back we would have left the first night.

Nice Getaway for a good price
The place was a cool older manor and the rooms had a great old English feel, nice furniture and the bed was awesome. (JCPenny tags kind of ruined the old feel) but the rooms were very clean. Only complaints were the guy staff members were not very friendly and the internet didnt work all the time. It was very cool to stay there though, the back yard felt like the secret garden, very european. The location was kind of weird, down a residential side street and a little walk to the bus stop, but not bad. Very quick ride downtown. Very well worth the money spent though.

Money-saving tip:
Short walk from hotel
The number 6 bus you catch off of Lampson street towards royal oak is only 2.50 compared to a 15 dollar cab ride. Its only 5 minutes too, if you dont mind a 5 minute walk up the street.

English Inn stay
The manor was beautiful and very clean, but the staff was distant and quite unfriendly. Only the cleaning lady was even somewhat friendly. Our room was lovely, but the bathroom was wierd with a sloped wall that my husband hit his head on. There wasn't anywhere to just sit quietly and read a book. There was two parties booked in the dining room the two nights we stayed and you just felt invasive. Plus the groups were rowdy and of course there is always the child running in a hall above you at 6:00am. I don't think I would recommend English Inn for a quiet stay, but definitely a private event! Last thing... no outside lights turned on 4 days til Christmas.

Three nights in Victoria at the English Inn
Loved the hotel it is beautiful inside and out with hardwood floors and lovely gardens. We stayed on the third floor and it was very spacious. The bed was comfortable and there was a couch and a small refrig and microwave. Light breakfast was provided. Best advise, don't bring a lot of luggage there are no elevators. All and all it was one of the nicest places we have ever stayed at.

Sightseeing tip:
Short drive from hotel
Butchard Gardens are a must. A little expensive but so very beautiful. All of the downtown area is worth exploring, If you don't have a lot of time you should take the tour bus.

quaint
I had the least expensive room in the hotel. While it wasn't huge, (I'm sure it used to be part of a fleet of servants quarters up there on the third floor), it was quaint and full of character. I had everything I needed, including a large screen TV with remote (it would take a bit of adjustment if m ore than 1 person was in the bed because of the angle needed to view). It was a bit warm up there, despite the fan, and thank goodness it wasn't the heat of summer. All in all, I really enjoyed the hotel and room, and staff. Oh, a dining room with food service would have been convenient.

Four star hotel ?
I don't think so. No refill on shampoo, soap, and tissue box. The floor was definitely not vacuumed. Broken shower hose was not fixed even it was brought to receptionist attention. The croissants for breakfast were good though.
