This hotel is fabulous- clean and in a great location. 2 things we didnt like : Parking is too overpriced (30 dollars per day) and if you get a standard room its very small.

This is a very nice hotel and the location is perfect just a block away from the Parlament and the river. The hotel is famous. However, I was very disappointment that despite its high price I had to pay extra for internet connection and extra for parking. It is a pity that such a luxurious hotel with its fame does not give these ammentities to all guest. You have to become a member to get it for free. After visiting Ottowa we drove to Toronto. We are staying at a Days Inn which is less expensive but includes free parking, internet, and breaksfast. The Fairmount was not a great deal.

"Classic" hotel fan
Beautiful hotel, really small room!!
It's hard for me to judge if the location is good for what most people may come to Ottawa for, but for my business the hotel couldn't have been better located.The hotel is one of those beautiful older hotels with great lobby area (and tea room and reading room) and wide corridors. It reminds me a little of the Peninsula in Hong Kong, though quite less refined and without the "beautiful - and very wealthy- people".About my room: It was adequately furnished, but very small. There was barely enough space for me to walk around the bed without bumping into the modest furnishings. There was nowhere to place my luggage while unpacking, nor was there a small accessible space for my attaché case (the contents of which I frequently have to access while working). Still, the bed was wonderful: fluffy but not too soft and well made. One more thing about my stay:The day I was supposed to check out, I had an early-morning meeting, that lasted far longer than expected and at the end of which it was decided that I stay in town for two more days.I got back to the hotel a little after check-out time to ask that my stay be extended for two more days and, while at it, see if I could get a larger room at the same price-point. At the reception, I was greeted by [...] who must have been irked by my delay since she put on "des airs de châtelaine" when talking to me, before ultimately telling me that she couldn't give me the same rate I had been paying and that I had an hour to:• find a better rate online• pay her new price, or• get a room in another hotel.Although I thought of signing up for their "Gold" service, realizing that I might end up paying a little more, but at least I would get a better room (and deal with the reception on the 4th floor, instead of Kathleen) given the complications I was having to deal with in my business, I didn't hasten to investigate any further possibilities. I am not a receptionist, after all... (not to mention that I had far bigger fish to fry at that point in time)So I booked a room in a neighboring hotel and said goodbye to that lovely lobby.PS. Another incident, witnessed at the breakfast buffet: When a guest asked for "an omelette", he was all but assaulted by the cook who wasn't quite content to find out what kind of omelette the guest wanted, but had to go on mumbling interminably, about how "you want an omelette and I'm supposed to know what you want - I can't read minds you know… Hey! I'm not psychic" and other such nonsense. I was almost driven to turn around and order an omelet, just to be able to tell him to hold the attitude.Note to management: You have a beautiful property! And your staff is effective, if not quite committed. Correcting the staff's attitude would elevate the overall experience to match the visual feast your property offers.

The Lovebirds
Fairly Decent
The staff was extremely friendly and did anything to make the stay more comfortable. The food was good, but extremely expensive. The location is perfect, right next to Parliament. On the other hand, the room wasn't that big and the bathroom was so small you could barely shut the door while you were in it. Parking was expensive too, but that might be how parking in Ottawa is in general.
