worth its cheap price, but not much more
the hotel is right in People's Square, straight in front of the subway exit, so location-wise its just the perfect low-budget solution. The only negative note (not so little though) comes from its smelly carpet floors, which give it a sense of dirtiness. It looks like it used to be a glamorous hotel, but now it's just old and would need a deep renovation to get back to its glorious past. Meanwhile, it's worth its very low price.

Money-saving tip:
Short walk from hotel
Don't EVER go to a Tea House with visiting "Chinese Students" you might meet in the local People's Square. It is a total scam and they will take you for a ride on your money. Be safe !

Great Location - Beautiful Old Hotel
The hotel is located right across the street from Peoples' Square and the subway stop. The subway is very convenient because the number 2 line takes you straight to and from the airport (You do have to get off the train at one stop and walk across the platform before 10). It is really convenient for food and shopping. There are places to shop and eat all over the place. There is a tour bus right across the street. I liked the staff which spoke english. If you want internet access, bring a computer to hook up in the room. Otherwise, you have to go to the business center in the lobby for an additional charge. The room was small, but I really like old hotels. It had a kind size bed, nice linens, wood paneled walls.

Dining tip:
Short walk from hotel
There is a really good place for soup (wan ton, etc) in the food court of the mall on the corner (the one where you walk out the front door of the hotel and turn left). It is in the basement next to McDonalds, etc. Really good soup for about $2 - $3 USD.

Great location
Clean comfortable hotel at great location overlooking people's square and right next to metro. Beautiful historic building. Close to great bars, especially Barbarossa, which is inside peoples square. Also convenient base for exploring the bund, Nanjing Lu, xintiandi and tianzifang. Only negative is the staffs english is not fluent and concierge desk not great about giving recommendations on what to do.

Great location and good value
Overall the hotel was good. It's location is great. It is right across the street from the main subway line and the People's Park and just a few blocks form the expansive pedesrtrian shopping mall. Everything else is just a short cab ride away. We paid for a 3 star and that's what we got. The staff was cordial and accomodating. Our feeling was that the room could have been cleaned a little better but otherwise the room was comfortable. We paid for an upgrade and it was worth it.

Take the subway. It is right across the street from the hotel. It is inexpensive and it is clean, fast and air conditioned. It can also be crowded at times as you might expect.

Good Value
Hotel was perfectly situated at the beginning of the Nanjing Pedestrian Road, one of Shanghai's major shopping streets. The rooms were spacious and the linens fresh. The bed was firm, most typical of Chinese hotels, but the pillows were soft. It fit my preference, exactly. The decor was a bit shabby, clearly the hotel had lost its grandeur through age. The rates were reasonable, as I booked online through [...]. Upon reading other reviews, I upgrade to a room with a view to People's Square. The view was not at all inspiring, just a small city park. Also, there was some traffic at night with horns blaring. I should have gotten just a regular, and saved the money.

Very decent and Affordable
The hotel has a good location and offers decent service. It is not the fanciest, but there really is nothing wrong with it at all. This is a safe choice if you do not want to spend too much money for a couple of nights in Shanghai.

Shopping tip:
Short walk from hotel
The start of Nianjing Pedestrian road is literally across the street. Follow this long road full of shops all the way to the end, and you will arrive at the sightseeing tunnel on the river bank

Great location
The hotel is in an amazing location--right across the street from People's Square subway station and right down the road from the Nanjing pedestrian shopping area and the Bund. The rooms were alright, but nothing special. We had to get an upgrade after the first night because our first room was very small and right next door to renovations that began around 8 in the morning. The bigger room was nicer and only about $15 extra per night, so I would suggest the upgrade. The hotel is an older building, so do expect to hear water rushing through the pipes every time a toilet is flushed or someone takes a shower. Hopefully the bathrooms are on the list of things to be renovated, because they were definitely old-looking and in need of some repair.
