Great location
The royal Dutch had very friendly staff and were very helpful. It's one block to central ave and the market. Near a lot of buses too. Not the most up to date place but for money was really good. Got free breakfast which was good to start day. Wouldn't recommend for family's. For people trying to check out the city it is great.

Traveling Gringo
Will stay there again my next trip.
Take ear plugs with you due to street noise but other than that I enjoyed my stay. If you like to latin dance the night club on the 2nd floor was hopping Friday and Saturday. The hotel is dated but comfortable the elevator is slow so I used the stairs most of the time.

Carlos on the Road
Perfect Location, Super Friendly Staff for Less than 40 Bucks
The Royal Dutch is not bad at all, staying there is safe and comfortable. The hotel is not new, but rooms are kept in very good shape. Staff super friendly, there is a casino in the ground floor and cultural venues as the National Theater are nearby. Unfortunately breakfast in the second floor is the same every single day, no variety whatsoever: pinto (rice mixed with black beans), scrambled egs and a sausage. if you like that diet, you'll feel at home haha Cumbia dancing lessons on Thursday nights at 8pm in the second floor. You couldn't find a cheaper real Hotel in the downtown area.

so easy to get taxis and the area is safe. not far is the Parque de Las Artes with a monument to Tango legend Carlos Cardel. A monument to Pope John Paul II is also nearby along Second Avenue (just walking distance). Also, nearby (7 blocks away) is the Hotel del Rey, a baroque-like building were willing professional ladies of the night search for the single man. not a place to go with the family.

Friendly Staff, Great Location
Room and staff was good, it made a huge difference, but a dinner I had was was very salty. Because of a cook that moment was awful. At other times food has been ok (in the second floor), especially during the free dinner of "pinto" (rice mixed with black beans), scrambled eggs, a sausage, a toasted bread and coffee. Casino in the ground floor was small but friendly and with lovely lady waiters. Overall a good staying (except for the salty dinner that january 2 2013 night)

Seven blocks west along Avenida 1 is the Hotel Del Mar Restaurant, expensive, but the best seafood in San Jose.

Good stop-over hotel
Room was clean and comefortable. Only one bar on my laptop so had to use my computer in the hallway downstairs where there were no electrical outlets. Luckily i was away from the noise of the casino and bar. Very few tv channels all in Spanish. I enjoy being downtown everythig is only a short walk away.

Aveneda Central is one of the best places to people watch. For a taste of the real Costa Rica and some great eats you can't beat the Mercado Central. Both are minutes from the hotel

central location and little else
The staff is corteous and they do their best to accommodate guests. It has a disco in a second floor adding energy to the space but depriving of sleep to tired travelers. For my purposes was sufficent. Guillermo Banuelos

This is an $30 hotel, I didn't expectations. The hotel is a casino & bar (and a place for meretrixes trade). I was for only a night, and the hotel is OK if I pay $30, I was able to a noise environment, but no, it was OK. I understand that a lot hotels in San José downtown has these characteristics ... but other people without information can receive a surprise!

GOOD TIME IN COSTA RICA
THE HOTEL IS NOT BAD BUT NOT THAT GOOD. IT PERFECTLY FINE FOR JUST TOURIST NIGHT STAY...I MEAN THEY HAVE WHATEVER U MAY NEED HOT WATER, BED ...IT WAS TOTALLY FINE FOR ME SINCE I CAME TO EXPLORE NEW AREA... LOCATED IN SAN JOSE LIKE 30 MIN FROM AIRPORT, STAFF ARE NICE AND HELPFUL.

The band played on
and on and on! Loud annoying and vibrated the entire hotel to 12 midnight . From about 8 PM. Aweful. Room was just that. A room. Would I ever stay there again.Heck no! My room was changed 3 times (once at my request because the band was one floor below me. They changed me to the 5th fl and then the elevator promptly (only one elevator of course) broke. then they had to change my room because of a mysterious problem with my room. So down to the 4th floor. In every room there was a different problem.The last room had almost no hot water.After running the shower 60 to 90 min, it got tepid cold! Stay away from this place.You will not like it!
