Beautiful

We had a great relaxing vacation. The rooms, staff, grounds, restaurants, pool, beach all great. The only thing would be they should have a free bar on the beach not a cash bar. Not a far walk to the 2 bars close to the beach but still?

fun week; very good value

First stay at this resort. Grounds are beautiful and very well maintained. Staff are very polite and friendly. Food is average on the whole; some of the restaurants are very good (Ma Maison for example) and others are average re service, food quality, or both. Need to change their house wines; both the red and white are barely tolerable! Rooms are comfortable (nice size for two people) and clean. Beach is very nice as are the two main pools located nearby. Evening entertainment is no better or worse for most of the resort hotels along the Punta Cana coast. Resort is very large but transportation is available to get you where you want to go. Looks like nice activities for children, and the golf course is within walking distance(greens fees included). All things considered a good value for your money.

House wine is terrible. Best to buy a bottle if you really enjoy with your meal. Some restaurants are quite good and others average or less than. Get some comments and reviews from other people and then make some selections.

Perfect Family Vacation

We had a great time during our 5 day vacation. Resort is beautiful, well maintained, staff is friendly. Was a little disappointed with some speciality restaurants, but overall it was fine. Had loads of fun at the tiki bar on the pool. There are so many Bars in this resort and great lounges. Free day care an you also get nanny services. Resort is huge, so be prepared to walk a little bit. Weather was perfect. We didnt upgarde to Royal service and i dont think we missed anything. Liqour is all domestic and only 1 beer - Presidente.

Most of the staff speaks only spanish and little bit of english. Just learn a little bit of spanish before you leave, this helps a lot.

Awesome for families with children!

We stayed at the Melia Tropical for one week and had a great time! We had our 1.5 year old daughter with us and as far as family friendliness, this hotel was tops! We did not get VIP upgrade and were very happy we didn't....we LOVED our room location near the beach, kids pool, kids club, breakfast/lunch buffet and most of "perks" of VIP were not very attractive to us being a young family. With children, a room near the beach and pool is a must! (Buildings 1-16 are best). The other restaurants are not too far and actually a very nice walk for the evenings, so that was not a problem especially since we didn't want to take the shuttle as we preferred to walk with the baby in her stroller. The staff was very nice, food was okay, although it lacked variety in regard to the buffets for breakfast and lunch, a la carte restaurants were great! Overall, we had an amazing time and will likely come back in the future with future children ;)

Great Place to Relax

I went to get away from the cold winter blues and it was just what I needed!! It was 12degrees in NYC and 82degrees there. the hotel was typical All Inclusive .....decent food, friendly staff and OK drinks but overall I was satisfied. I recommend this hotel if you just want a get away that is good but not great.

Great family vacation

We took the trip with our two kids aged 20 and 23. The restaurants were very good, the beach clean and beautiful. Went sailing a couple of times and the conditions were great. New years eve had a big party and fireworks. We had a great time.

Great Vacation, but some things I wish I'd known

1: bring quite a bit of cash in 5 DOLLAR BILLS. There is a lot of tipping that you need to do, and it sucks to get caught with only 20 dollar bills. taking out $100 in american money costs an extra $26, so bring the cash. 2: Make sure you book a voucher to have transportation to and from the airport. Get to the airport early for the flight home, because the line is long; however, the long line was primarily due to a forced picture. you can cut most of the line with that knowledge if you go around the photo station. 3: You must make dinner reservations the day before. Breakfast and lunch have no reservations. Note that beer and cocktails at dinner are included, but you must pay for bottles of wine. There is also a dress code. You cannot just go in your bathing suit or cover-up. Ladies: dresses, or skirts or shorts with a nice top. They seemed to have less guidelines for females. Gentlemen, bring some slacks, some khaki shorts, polos and button downs. These combinations worked fine for us. I would leave the super high heals at home - walkways are uneven. 4: You have to get up early to save chairs with your towels. Please be considerate and actually get to the chairs at a reasonable time so people don't have to stare at your reserved chair for half of the day while they lay on the ground. 5: Excursions really make the vacation. Most of the half-day excursions cost about $180 USD. WORTH IT. - We went on the zipline, and the dolphin cruiser. Both were so much fun. 6: Be very friendly to the staff! We made friends with a staff member named Juan, and he was incredible. He booked out dinner reservations every night, surprised us with our jacuzzi bath filled with bath salts and flowers, and picked us up for everything. Be careful not to tip too much too early. We tipped Eduardo well when he brought the bags to our room, and we never saw his face again the whole week (he was supposed to bring us a room service menu and our room keys, mind you). 7: Be persistent. Other than Juan, we had problems with things happening in a timely fashion. I know they are busy, but I shouldn't have to wait an hour and a half for a room service menu. one person even admitted "Dominican time. 10 minutes means a half hour or so." 8: Don't be afraid to try new things!!! Dominican Republic is known for goat (which is fantastic), and Mama Juana. Really most of the food was wonderful. 9: Beware of time-share sellers. Don't be afraid to say no and walk away. 10: ENJOY!!!

Very Nice

I would go here again. The only thing we didn't enjoy was the food, but we only did the buffet. If I go again we will try to the other dinning options. We had a wonderful time and would recommend this resort.

The good and the bad

The hotel grounds were very good and well kept. A beautiful resort but was to big for my taste. The room was very nice and clean. The beach was very nice and inviting. We upgraded to the Royal Service and there was nothing Royal about it. I was there for five days and there were only a couple of times I felt like the staff even really cared to help me with a question or anything else. Several times I would walk up to the Royal Service desk or another area where several hotel employees were located (towel attendants at the pool, front desk, several bars and restaurants, etc) and they would not even acknowledge my presence, I would have to interrupt them from texting on their phones or having a conversation between themselves to get any service. I always felt like I was bothering them instead of feeling like they welcomed me as a guest and were happy to help me. Overall the food was good and there is a restaurant that you can pay extra for steak and lobster. My family of three chose to eat at this restaurant one night and it was outstanding. Overall I don't think the cost of the trip was in line with the poor service we received. Some final notes - there was no conditioner in the showers and they did not provide it, we had to pay 11 U.S. dollars for a small bottle of conditioner in the gift shop. Also, we had to pay 33 U.S. dollars for a bottle of sun screen so make sure you bring your own! That is ridiculous!
