Not as last year, but still OK

I stayed at this hotel last year for the same amount I had payed this year. I was given a room with a view of the generators and the backside. When I requested a change, they had stated that because I had payed a "standard rate" a change was not possible. I had payed the same rate last year, and was given a superior room with ocean view, and higher up in the tower. I guess this year it was the luck of the draw.

Not great for couples looking to swim by the beach

Overall comfortable beds. Unable to get our money refunded. We booked thinking the beach wasn't that far away. It's pretty far from the beach so you need a car. About a 5 min drive from la zona colonial, which is a tourist area, walked around and did site seeing for a couple of hours. Couldn't do much since we didn't have a car. Beautiful ocean view. Includes ONE complimentary coffee. Internet cost $6 per day.

Front desk staff not very helpful

This was the second time that I stay in this hotel. The hotel is great but this time I had a really bad experience with the front desk staff. I reserved a room for 4 people and I asked if I was paying for a room or per person, they told me I can bring 3 people along. When I check in I was alone and nobody asked me if somebody else was checking in. Two days after I arrived a friend came and was not able to saty with me. They told me I would have to pay $25.00 per night. Then another staff member told me $26.00 per night and the fallowing morning another staff member told me $50.00. I was very disapointed and nobody did anything to fix the problem. The day I check out I had a bill for something I didn't consume. They never told me what it was and at the end I had to pay for it because I was late and couldn't wait for them to explain. I am not staying in the hotel anymore.

Very Nice Hotel

Stayed one night on our return to from vacation in another part of the island. Hotel was beautiful, and the service was excellent. However the rooms showed some signs of why they are in the midst of a remodeling project.

Very Good

I stayed there two different nights and was very satisfied with the location. The staff was very courteous and efficient. I registered with their Mas program, for repeated guests, and received a room upgrade on my second night. They also held my excess lugage, while I traveled to other parts of the country. I would go back next time.

My 2nd. experience at the Melia

This is my 2nd stay at the Melia. Once again I have found that for the most part everyone is extremely friendly and SUPER helpful.....I was walking down the hall with my bucket to get ice and a staff member bumped into me and said "don't you bother yourself, I will fill this for you immediately".....these folks are really instructed to focus on "guest relations" but by far the BEST PART of the Melia is the Casabe Restaurant staff ( [...] ) WOW! I can't say enough for the attention to detail, the courtesy, respect and humor of these professionals ( and the food is amazing ). [...]the housekeeper who was in and out of my room was pure professionalism. Never did anything of mine go missing and she was approachable, respectful and absolutely ready to make me feel as comfortable as possible. [...], the bartender at the pool was amazing. My 2 experiences have been pure delight. Melia staff are absolutely 100% focused on making the hotel guest feel absolutely comfortable, they will do whatever they need to so that you feel as if YOU are the ONLY guest that matters. See you next year. I was very pleased and so was my son, who had not been to Santo Domingo since he was 5 an he is now 31. My personal experience was 2 thumbs way, way up!!!

Dining tip: In Hotel

The hotel restuarant CASABE is a gem, I never went to eat anywhere else ( other than my family's house ). The staff is worth the trip, those gentlemen are so welcoming and courteous, the decor is beautiful and the food amazing.

Good hotel

This is a pretty good hotel overall in terms of service and maintenance. Very helpful and friendly staff. The woman in the business center was particularly helpful when I was having some computer problems. The wireless internet service in room was perfect and reasonably priced. The quality of the food in the Casabe (?) restaurant was very good and service was great, prompt and friendly. The only minor annoyances were: 1) the thermostat did not seem to work - it kept the room at 19C all the time, even when I turned it up to 24. The man that came to look at it just turned it up to 30 and said there, it will be warmer now, as if I didn't know how to turn it up. I just turned it off when it got too cold, didn't have time for another request for repair. 2) The worst thing, although not bad enough to try to move to another room, was that somehow cigarette smoke comes into the bathroon from a vent in the bathroom. Pretty awful for a non-smoking room. But again, I didn't have time to try to deal with this issue. There was a notice in the room that says they are remodeling rooms in the hotel and there might be some noise between 10 am and 6 pm, but I did not hear anything. All in all, a good 4 day stay, except for the two minor inconveniences above. Nice pool, nice view of ocean. Casino and disco next door. SLOW/boring lobby bar in hotel. Hotel was fairly quiet at all times, which I appreciate.
