Great place, Great People & a Great Value
This is a real find in Quito and a great value. The area can be a bit sketchy at night but there are a number of excellent restaurants close by. Be sure to use the staff to call your cab. They monitor which cab picks you up and which one brings you back which can be a real help. I mention this because the standard procedure when you get a cab is to tell them where you want to go and ask how much it will cost. Our cabbie simply pointed to the meter which every cab is supposed to have but few do. Our previous experience with a metered cab had been excellent so we thought we were set. WRONG! We went to El Panecillo a common viewpoint where you can overlook the city. When we got there he asked if we wanted him to wait because he said cabs don't generally come up there so we asked if there was an additional charge and he said no. We spent about 25 minutes walking around and returned to the cab. We went back to the Hotel only to find the fare was $50.00! YIKES. We paid but when we went into the Hotel we checked at the desk about the fare and they said absolutely not and called the cab company right back. On check out about 30 minutes later they gave us a $27.00 refund in cash and apologized for the problem. Outstanding! We had requested a room on an upper floor which we got. It was room 908 which was away from the street and high enough that traffic noise was not a problem. The room was spotless, linen excellent, and the minibar while expensive was very well stocked. We always got good information from the desk and they were always very polite. Loved this place and will return.

Dining tip:
Short walk from hotel
There is an excellent Ecuadorian restaurant, Achiote, which is only two blocks away. Outstanding menu with items we simply haven't seen anywhere else and the the food was excellent. The wine list is short but very good with interesting selections from Chile and Argentina. We went twice to dinner here because it was so good.

Ordinary Hotel, Extraordinary Staff
The rooms are clean, simple and nothing special. It's a little noisy in the hotel. The location is very convenient to shopping and nightlife. The place that this hotel absolutely shines is in its staff. One employee in particular, Richard from the front desk, went way above and beyond in making sure that we had an absolutely wonderful visit to Quito. He arranged a hired driver to take us to all the sights and to make the best use of our time. I can't say enough about how professional and helpful this gentleman was, and I highly recommend this hotel as a result. All of the front desk staff spoke fluent English and were friendly and helpful.

Average with no comparison
Trying not to compare it to hotels here in the states and base it soley on my experience in Ecuador, I give this hotel 3 stars. I was there for 2 days before flying to the coast. The room was great! My only complaint with the room was the hot water was very sensitive--we're talking centimeters of difference between scalding hot and cold (though I think this might have just been an issue w/ my room). The staff were great and bilingual which is a plus for guests that don't speak spanish. They had 2 computers to use w/ fast internet, 2 restaurants (I only visted the cheaper of the two). The food was par, not great, not bad...though it was a little pricey for Ecuadorian standards. It was right in the middle of the new town (Mariscal Sucre), which I've heard is getting more dangerous, though I personally had no problems. My flight was 3 hours late and I didn't get to the hotel until 2 in the morning and they were waiting on me. They had 2 or 3 guards at the doors at night. For a hotel under $100 in the middle of Quito it was overall a good experience. I would stay there again.

Quito is BEAUTIFUL...it's got its poor places and its rich places, safe and dangerous (I felt safer in Quito than I do in Atlanta!), but situated in the mountains, it is surrounded by beauty and great people more than willing to help and show you their beautiful country.
