Great location. A bit pricey for what you get for US standards

The room was pretty standard, but considering that for the same $220 per night you can stay at the Venetian in Las Vegas, the Intercontinental is quite pricey for what you get. Internet was not free, but not overly expensive, although the speed wasn't very fast. The Lebanese restaurant has great quality food, although pricey. The location is really good as it is in the middle of down town, and you can walk to the Egypt museum in 10 minutes, and a short 4 metro stops will take you directly to the Hanging Church. There was a wedding on one of the days we stayed there, and they blasted the music from the 2nd floor restaurants so loudly that when talking to the reception, I couldn't hear him talk from across the counter. However, I guess that is normal for middle eastern weddings. Breakfast buffet was fairly good, but for the same $30 per person, the buffet in Las Vegas blows this away.

This was a luxury hotel - pretty much top-notch in terms of services, room and such. We ate there several times - very pricey, especially with the 25%+ service fees and taxes added on. Food was good. We got good service - the desk manager was most accommodating and the business center allowed me short-time access to my email for no fee (the only hotel of 6 to do this for me). Overall it was a positive experience and a great refuge from the cacophony of Cairo.

Shopping tip: Short walk from hotel

The complimentary bottled drinking water was not adequate to meet our daily needs and additional water, snacks, and drinks were expensive in the hotel. But there is a little kiosk out the side door where we purchased bottled water, drinks and snacks for perhaps one tenth the hotel price. The wizened old man running the shop was very friendly and one of few vendors in Egypt who wasn't hustling.

OPT OUT OFR THE MORE EXPENSIVE LIMOUSINE SERVICE, IF YOU HAVE A CHOICE, RATHER THAN TAKING A TAXI. TAXIS IN CAIRO ARE PATCHWORKS OF OLD CARS PUT TOGETHER, GENERALLY DO NOT HAVE AIR CONDITIONING (A MAJOR PROBLEM DUE TO HEAT AND DUST WHICH IS ALL PERVASIVE) AND NEGOTIATE WITH THE DRIVERS. PRICES VARY WITH SIZE IF CAR, SO DON'T BE INTIMIDATED BY THE WORD LIMOUSINE, MORE OFTEN THAN NOT, IT REFERS TO A SEDAN TYPE CAR. ALSO EVERYTHING IS SO CHEAP IN EGYPT THAT IT ISN'T A BAD IDEA TO SPOIL ONESELF A LITTLE ONCE IN A WHILE...

you can do better...

HOTEL RECEPTION STAFF WERE NOT HELPFUL. CHECK IN / OUT TOOK TOO LONG DO NOT USE THE TOUR GUIDE SERVICE PROVIDED BY HOTEL GUEST SERVICES; OUR GUIDE SPENT A LOT TIME TAKING US TO "GOVERNMENT" STORES AND SHOPS; AND NOT TO THE MUSEUMS, ETC... THE RESTAURANTS AND SHOPS IN THE HOTEL WERE VERY GOOD. THE AIRPORT PICK UP / DROP OFF SERVICE PROVIDED BY THE HOTEL WAS GOOD.

Intercontinental Semiramis

If you take traveler's checks take your bank receipt or you will have a difficult time in Cairo cashing them. Not so difficult at the Red Sea resorts. Also be prepared if you get any assistance, baggage or what not they will expect pay and they try to grab your bags even if you tell them no.

Never accept the first price they offer you. The Kahn is a great shopping place that you can barter and get a lot for your money.
