Paris in Winter

The staff at the Grand Hotel de l'Avenue are friendly and speak English well, and those we interacted with the most went out of their way to give us suggestions on what to see/do during our trip. Their recommendations were spot on - they know the city well, and we were able to learn about fantastic places thanks to them. The elevator wasn't working the first day we were there, but was functioning during the remainder of our week-and-a-half stay. Our room was on the cozy-side, but that's to be expected at hotels in big cities, nothing surprising. Our hotel room was on the third floor and our windows were facing the street - we could hear some street traffic during the mornings when our windows were shut, but it wasn't that loud at all for us. Our room had hardwood floors, a double bed, a bit of closet-space on both sides of the bed, a small desk, and small TV. Hotel Wifi was free, and while it wasn't high-speed internet, it suited our purposes fine (browsing, checking email). Our bathroom was spacious and looked like it was recently remodeled, no bathtub, but everything worked well. Very conveniently located. The Republique metro station was a 2-3 minute walk away, and has 5 lines going through it. There is a laundry facility within 2 blocks, and a Monop' convenience store within 1 block. We've already recommended this hotel to our friends, and would definitely stay here again if we come back to Paris for another visit.

Getting the basics right!

I would recommend this place, especially to younger travellers. I stayed here with my girlfriend while we visited friends and family in Paris. The review can be broken into main points: * Location. Location is a stones throw from Republique metro, central, and on several main lines. Acces to the whole of central Paris and ports (Eurostar, CdG, TGV etc.) is minutes away. It is also easy to get to and from some good night spots and with Metro's late running times, it's perfect for going out. There are some places at Republique for some late night drinks, and local restaurants, but I would recommend going further afield. It is however noisy at night, so bear that in mind, with people walking by the hotel on a busy road. But the metro is a safe short walk even at night, and the pros far outway the noise problem. * Quality of rooms. Rooms are basic, but they get the basics right. The bed is comfortable enough, the room is clean, cleaning staff are friendly and efficient, showers have high pressure and hot/cold ok, it's a bit small but hey, you're in the centre of Paris! * Staff. The staff are the star turn here. Everyone including the owner was so nice, helpful, funny, and keen to help you, and make sure you ejoyed thestay. I feel this is a really important quality when staying in a foreign city which can at times come across as cold and impersonal. It was nice to come back to this warm reception. * Price. Price is okay. For its location, quality and reception, it's worth it. I've stayed in Paris many many times, usually in the same hotel, but I think this place has taken the mantle! I will be booking here in the future. Overall: it's humble but they get the basics right - friendly staff, clean rooms with all amenities you need, excellent location, decent price. It's not as cheap as it probably would have been ten years ago, but that's Europe unfortunately. Compared to the competition, it's a great deal and you should be very happy staying there. You'll feel you got a good deal, and you can go out and enjoy Paris, with a warm reception when you return at the end of the day/night!

Jump on Line 11 from Republique to Hotel de Ville and walk East along the Rue de Rivoli. You'll find some nice restaurants and bars in a little square there and you can stay out till le dernier metro at 2:02am! Fun is just 2 stops away on the metro, or a cheap cab ride.

Republique Metro Location

Only tolerable if you don't plan on being in the room much. Very noisy neighborhood, very small room and a shower I could barely turn around in (and I'm not a big guy). The only amenity i was interested in was the free WiFi, but it didn't really work well. Over all... I would pay more money for a better hotel.

A perfect gem for Paris intro

This hotel's website accurately describes their services, and the many reviews we read did fairly capture its strengths and weaknesses. It is located nicely for touring all of Paris, as we did in 5 days. It is located close to major Metro lines (which we used extensively) and there are several of the public bicycle stations nearby...which we also used. Additionally, restaurants and cafes nearby were excellent quality and value for want of just a little effort to search and read menus...which is fun. This hotel is just a block off of Republique...not the busiest site in town...but since it's a block away, just a little quieter, too. We had a room that opened onto the back (not the street) which turned out for the best as there was some jack-hamnering going on the street at 8am each morning, but nothing to do with the hotel. Our room, on the top floor, was 'smallish', but of excellent quality and cleanliness. The daily cleaning staff were thorough. The desk staff were extremely efficient, professional and friendly...I honestly can't think of how to improve staffing there, they were just that good. Everything worked in our room, the linens and bedding were excellent...and I can't even force a thought about how to improve the hotel. It was excellent value, excellent location, and excellent staffing. I WILL stay there again when in Paris...likely in a couple of years. [...]

Time-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

It's about a 20 minute walk to Notre Dame...and the centre of the City...and DO take the walk, there's lots to see on the way. After that, use the Metro AND the public bicycling system. The bikes were fun after a little confusion in setting up our accounts. And DON'T overlook some of the great restaurants in the area...but I can't remember their names...an excellent breakfast to be had from the red-coloured bar on the south end of the Republique, right on the square, opposite the "Indiana" bar. There's also a great Norman (as in "Normandy") restaurant about 200 metres from the hotel...ask for directions from the hotel staff. I'm partial to Normande menus though...

Basic but good

This hotel was clean and the staff was helpful even in trying to speak English. Remember European rooms are always small. These rooms are completely adequate with clean bedding and modern showers for the cost. Expect possibly walking steps to your room, the lift was being repaired but no big deal you need the exercise anyway. Walkable to the Metro station, neighborhood restaurants, pharmacy, bars etc.. I would stay here again.

The hotel was good but the beds were bad and the room very small. Great location and the people at the desk were great. Very helpful and suggested great places to visit and things to do. Most importantly walked with me for a few blocks to show me the way. Also, saved me money but suggesting different modes of transportation. I enjoyed the stay. Thanks

Clean & Adequate

We booked this hotel for only one night, as it was just three kilometres from where we picked up our car. It was clean, and was in the middle of renovations (October 2010), but the check-in,service and rooms were all acceptable. Continental breakfast was very good. It is only 2-Star quality, but good value. Not recommended for long stays.

A bit noisy but I slept well in

A bit noisy but I slept well in a good bed anyway. the eleveator was broken and they were nice enough to put me in a room on the 1st floor so I did not need to lag my luggage up several floors.
