The value was in the price
PLUSES - Centrally located & convenient for access to more 'touristy' parts of the city such as Syntagma Square, Plaka, Monastiraki & Acropolis. Good breakfast. Friendly & helpful staff. Good level of cleanliness throughout. Price: just under 18 euros per night - a major plus. MINUSES - Poor air-conditioning in room, so room felt like a greenhouse even with air-con at high setting. No proper fridge in room to keep drinks, etc cool. Poor noise insulation. Generally 'seedy' part of town, although I never felt unsafe. Poor view.

Let down by area
The Ionis is remember, a budget hotel. Bearing this in mind, I cannot criticize the overall quality of the hotel. The first impressions of the building were quite pleasing. A glass facade, large reception area complete with two computors for the use of guests (free) and free WiFi throughout the hotel. I had a room over the front street which was roomy and reasonably clean albeit a bit tired. Any noise from the front street caused me no problem when the door was closed, and the view from the balcony gave me a good overview of the seedy street corner night life. Maid service everyday was good with friendly and helpfull staff. The `American` breakfast was fried eggs ( I believe sunny side up), and some sort of fried frankfurter sausage (horrible), plus the usual toast and jam, cereal, cake and cooked meat and cheese. The area itself was very seedy, but I never felt threatened at night when I went out. Very handy for getting about, Omonia Metro station very near, 5mins. with routes to everywhere. Me, a pensioner could travell anywhere exept the Airport for 0.70 Euro. Overall, remembering that this is a BUDGET Hotel, worth the money, and I would certainly use it again. Don`t forget to visit the Helenic Motor Museum, 10 mins. walk.

Athens on a budget.
Although this hotel is set in the Omonia section of Athens - many people had written it was so bad. Well, we didn't think it was that bad. Actually, we found it rather outside the tourist area so prices for other products weren't as much and it was easy to get around. The breakfast was super great ... so good in fact we only ate two meals a day. The hotel rooms are older and our toilet titled ... but really - how long do you spend in the room? They were clean and that's what counts. The staff arranged a private car to take us where our feet could not during the transportation strike. Though the staff could have done a better job pointing out "interesting" things to do - it wasn't that big of a deal because there are several travel agencies near by ready to help if you want to make your own plans. I must say we weren't scared like several sites wrote about the area --- everyone just went on about their business.

filthy and loud location, dirty towels
although the location is near the metro station and walking distance to acropolis.. there are prostitutes, cockroaches, transvestites and all kinds of filthy stuff near this hotel that just ruins your day even during the short walk.. also the towels inside the hotel look like they haven't been changed for a decade.. it's not only black dirty it has holes and cotton coming off of it... also inside the room it's very noise at nights due to street noise from bars and honking cars.. will never stay here again, you'd be better off paying more and not ruining your holiday...
