Loved the character of the place. The exterior and grounds are well maintained 19th century, but the rooms are modern and clean. There's a nice bar downstairs with plenty of seating in the lounge area. They've also got a cash machine in the lobby, so you won't have to worry about hunting one down. Great location for visiting Dublin: 3 blocks from DART station, Aircoach bus stop is right out front, and it's close to some good restaurants.

I travel more than I woul like for work and occassionally find a hotel or B&B that makes the list of places that I would bring my Wife and children for holiday. The Grand Canal Hotel made the short list. The lobby and room were bright and airy, the Irish breakfast was devine; however, the staff separates this hotel from their comptitors.

May 2012 trip

  • Modest traveler
  • 14 May 2012
I booked this hotel for a first and last day of a trip to Ireland in May 2012. There were three people in the group so we used the three bed room. Felt like everything was from Ikea but had a good clean feel to it. If you are just going to use the room to sleep, shower, etc... it is a great location and perfectly adequate. There is a good breakfast buffet in the morning and the bar / restaurant has a good selection for dinner. Please note the kitchen closes at 10 pm local time so, don't expect to be able to come in and eat late.

Nice Experience

  • BamaBelle8
  • 1 Apr 2012
This hotel was a pleasant surprise. The staff was exceptional, the room was clean, and we were allowed to check in super early (without extra charges). The concierge desk was extremely helpful and everyone was very polite/friendly. The hotel/accommodations were neat and tidy. It is an older hotel, but very clean. The hotel was very busy hosting business events/parties but this did not interfere with service. The bar/restaurant is quite expensive which deterred us from trying it. The bed was not comfortable and the room temperature was HOT. For safety reasons, our window only opened about 4 inches so we were very warm the entire time. The front desk told us how to turn off the heat, but the room never really cooled down. The pillows were terrible, so we used our travel pillows (thankfully we brought them). The furniture was scratched up in places, yet clean and sturdy. We did not mind this, yet was surprised to see it. The location is about a 20 minute walk to St. Stephen's Green. Taxi cabs lined the driveway, but we walked most of the time. A couple of our destinations were far from the hotel, so we took a taxi. There are a couple of pubs about 3 blocks away (one place looked more like a restaurant than pub). Otherwise, you have to get to St. Stephen's before finding food/drink. Our major complaint about this hotel was the noise level on Saturday night. Previous reviewers mentioned that it could be noisy and they were right. We had to wear ear plugs to sleep that night (thank goodness we had some with us). Overall we are happy with our experience, for what we paid (which was extremely low). My attitude would be more negative if we had paid the advertised price per night found online. In the future, we plan to stay in a hotel closer to Dublin (the St. Stephen's area was lovely). It became irritating to walk so far at the end of a long day of sightseeing, and the taxi cabs were pretty expensive in our opinion. Bottom line: I would recommend this hotel to people that do not mind walking everywhere (and are physically able to do so), and to those that do not mind out of date decor/well worn furniture. I would also suggest finding a lower price than advertised.

Better than we hoped

  • Brookie
  • 29 Mar 2011
We chose the Tara Towers as it was in the right location for the car touring we wanted to do south of Dublin. We checked in early (early flight into Dublin) with no problems. Room large, clean and comfortable but overheated so we had to open windows as it couldn't be adjusted. Food, bar and service were all excellent, and ample parking which is a bonus in Dublin! Have already recommended the hotel to others.

Erittäin ystävällinen henkilökunta. Hotellin ravintolassa todella maukkaat illalliset ja pubi loistava levähdyspaikka kävelyretkien päätteeksi. Hieman vanhanaikaiset ja paikoittain kuluneet huoneet, joita tosin remontoidaan parhaillaan. Kävelymatkaa keskustaan kertyy noin 2 km. Silti aivan erinomainen hinta/laatusuhde.

The Schoolhouse was a very pleasant place to stay. The staff were all very courteous, polite and friendly. We only had a few minor grumbles- the fan in our bathroom didn't work and the internet facilities weren't great. The TV reception wasn't very good either - but we didn't go to Dublin to watch TV! We tried to leave a tip with the receptionist for all the staff but she refused to take it!! Nice touch!

I am giving this all five starts because how well I was treated by the owners and staff even though I did not stay at the Merrion Hall. But instead one of their other properties The Aberdeen Lodge not to far away. When I arrived the Merrion Hall was haveing heating problems and they accomadated me by picking me up and getting me a room in the other property. The staff was wonderful and very helpful, rooms were clean and the Breakfast was wonderful. I would recommend these properties to my friends..

Modest with much to be modest about

  • Cranky Yankee
  • 9 Jun 2010
Very nice staff but this "hotel" (more like a guest residence) is under construction and looks a long way from having its act together. Ireland isn't often hot, but having no functioning ventilation system left me roasting, even with windows open to the loud street immediately outside. Package this with no fitness room and wi-fi that cut in and out frequently, and I must hope that there are better options available for you.

Description
In Dublin's Victorian Quarter, on one of the tree-lined avenues with red brick facades, stands Butlers Townhouse. Enter through the stately door and into an oasis of country tranquility in the heart of cosmopolitan Dublin. Since opening in March 1997, a stay at Butlers has provided guests with an experience rather than just a visit. Guests are transported into a bygone era, to their own private club residence. Interwoven with the elegant Victorian essence of the house you will find the convenience of a modern hotel. The 20 superb bedrooms, with air conditioning and modem points, are discreetly dressed in the style of a more leisurely age. Carefully selected, skilled staff anticipating your every need performs the personalized service. The proprietors recognize that city hungry guests prefer to 'go out' for dinner, especially in an area so well endowed with fine restaurants, or take lunch wherever they find themselves - shopping, sightseeing or on business. Be assured, however, that the gourmet Irish breakfast, and the light room service menu are superlative. The drawing room houses the bar, a congenial setting for sociable guests and friends. In Butlers, rest and relaxation is the key. The hotel also offers excellent meeting and banquet facilities that cater to your important business and social events. During leisure, guests can take a leisurely walk in the leafy idyll of neighboring Herbert Park. Alternatively, you could take the dart to the city centre or enjoy a trip along the coastline to Howth or Bray. The hotel offers Bar,Laundry service, Parking facilities, Light Room service and Lounge.

Fantastic stay in Dublin

  • Quil
  • 8 May 2011
We came into Dublin very early in the morning, previously sending an email asking if we could at least drop our bags at the hotel. We received a prompt and kind response, offering that we have tea or coffee in the sitting room, while our room was being prepared. Our room was ready almost immediately and were delighted by every part of our stay. The food was great, the service was wonderful, and it is in a beautiful quiet part of Dublin, within a ten to fifteen minute walk to busy shopping areas and historical sites. We would definitely stay at Butler's Townhouse again, and recommend it to friends, family and colleagues.

The advertisement for the hotel, told us that it was only a short distance from the center of the city. That was definitely not a case, it was a half an hour walk away. we had to pay for taxis everyday. Not very happy about that.

Beautiful boutique hotel in dublin 4 located within walking distance to city center. Friendly staff provided a warm welcome and valuable information for site seeing. Clean rooms with beautiful bathrooms located on floors 2 and up. Nice bar with delicious chocolate brownies in the lobby. Only downfall we ran into was the noise from the night club located in the basement on weekends. Otherwise absolutely recommend staying here! Perfectly located, comfortable, friendly and clean!
