Great location-igreat views ..... Needs attention to detail

This is where the tour boats take snorkelers. Clear water but not much to see in the way of coral or fish. Semi private beach next to the hotel allows you to get away from the crowed beaches. Villa rooms are furnished like a motel - dated, sloppy workmanship(wiring, chaulking). Poor lighting in bathroom, toilet is a two flusher. The the bed is as hard as a rock. Pool ladders missing steps / broken. Staff need lessons on being friendly instead of looking away. Nice breakfast buffet.

Good value

Very nice beach with decent snorkeling. Close enough to walk easily into town. Room nothing fancy, but a good value for the price. The sound of the waves on the rocks right outside your window very nice.

A mojito and a Cuban sandwich at Cubanos makes for a great lunch, a nice way it while away a couple hours.

Great Location, OK hotel

We stayed 6 days in a villa. Pros: Location, views, quiet, no sales pitches, Cons: Run down in places (Broken door lock, broken AC, 3 out or 4 pieces of excersize equipment out of order), no phones or wifi in the rooms, lots of tiny ants in the room. Staff; I will be nice and say friendly but confused, it's like they never ran a hotel before. Food: Breakfast buffet is too expensive, just order from the bar menu. Lunch and dinner, don't bother with the resturant, either eat in the bar or wak across the bridge. Disappointments: No phone in the room. We paid for the Gray line transfer from the airport to the hotel. Found out this does not include the Ferry or taxi to the hotel. Not worth the $90, just take a cab or shuttle.

Great place!

The best thing about the Avalon Reef is the location - at the northwestern tip of Isla Mujeres, set along a BEAUTIFUL crystal blue lagoon (you have to cross over a long dock to get to the hotel) on one side & the Caribbean Sea on the other. It's also easy walking distance to the main strip with all the quaint shops & amazing restaurants. The lobby is nice, and the staff are very friendly & helpful. The rooms are bare bones, but we didn't mind, as it was just a place to lay our heads. We didn't go to the restaurant or bar, just b/c we enjoyed going across the dock & into town. All in all, it was a great deal & we couldn't have been more pleased with our stay!

location location location

what a fabulous location! Shallow bay perfect for children. Not on a great living reef per say, but saw plenty of interesting fish, at least 10 different kinds. The views are breathtaking! Restaurant has good drink prices and breakfast was good. Dinner is just ok, maybe a little less than ok, but convenient and beautiful. Not to far to town for great food. I highly recommend Dopi's gourmet burritos and quesadillas, but get the steak, seriously! Rooms basic, comfortable and clean. Did not find the beds hard at all.

Not a good experience

They gave us a hotel room that was not what I had ordered. Then they didn't want to change my room, when i asked them to, and at the end they didn't even refund me the money. I was not happy with my stay at this hotel, because of the customer service.

Paradise

This was my second stay at the Avalon Reef. My studio was right on the ocean, so close that in the morning I would have to wipe the salt spray off my chaise before I could drink my coffee and watch the sunrise. Some people complain that it is over priced but where can you really have a room on the ocean on your own private island. Security is great and no one is admitted on the property but guests. Security actually removed some people while I was swimming in the nature made pool, which is one of a kind. You can sit at the edge and have fish swim around you or swim to the other side and be pounded by waves. Where else in Mexico can you find this. I slept with my sliding glass door open and was luled to sleep by the sound of waves and woke to a beautiful sunrise every morning. The staff was helpful and friendly. The breakfast buffet is great. I ate dinner downtown which is a short walk. This is a place to relax and read or just enjoy the views. Which is what I am looking for in a vacation. This is not for party people and there is not a lot for children to do. I would recommend it to people who just want to relax. The studios are worth the extra price because you are on the ocean. You can ask for one with waves and the sun rise or quiet with a scene of the beach, pier, and sunset. I cannot wait to return.

Time-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

Downtown which is a five minute walk at most has an array of different food alternatives: Mexican, Itilian, Coffee shops, a bookstore that you can eat in, etc.
