The perfect island getaway, Isla Mujeres is rich in mayan history. Translated, the island's name literally means "Island of Woman," which was given after the Spaniards arrived to Isla Mujeres and found a large number of statues of woman dedicated to Ixchel, the goddess of love and fertility.
Since then, the island has been rediscovered by visitors from all over the world looking for a romantic getaway and contact with nature. And due to its close proximity to Cancun and Rivera Maya, Isla Mujeres is also a wonderful starting point for discovering the Yucatan and its many archaeological sites.

Twice and still wow
This was our 2nd year there and nicer than the wow I gave it last year, staff was great. garden much more groomed, maids were very kind. The only thing that was a little upsetting was the cats and dogs that were around, but that was the entire island. The island has to get a grip on the animal control.

I enjoy this place
I have stayed at Maria del Mar many times and will continue to go back. It has excellent location for the great beach just steps away. This was my first stay in the Towers and they were really small so, if booking a package deal, I would recommend the upgrade to the Cabana rooms. They are larger rooms and have a beautiful view of the interior gardens and pool. This place is a great value, but don't go with great expectations. Just relax and enjoy the location.

Great in almost everyway
I was a little reluctant to book this hotel by the user ratings but this was a great place to stay. The staff was a little slow but the life on the island is slow and relaxing. The room was kept immaculate and the maid staff was nothing but excellent. The location is right on the beach and attracts mostly European visitors. Yes the continental breakfast was not a great layout but the coffee, juice and toast was perfect for me to set out the day. The beach was clean and relaxing and gave one the ultimate real Mexican local flavor not like the resorts where you feel you haven't left the U.S.

Depends on the room you get!
Some rooms are very run down and outdated. I was given one and asked if I left the following day, if I could get my money back. I was then moved to a better room. The staff is not very friendly. The pool is nothing spectacular. The grounds have white pipe laying above the ground to water things and looks tacky. The property has a fence around it for security, including between the grounds and beach. After 5:00 PM, you have to walk around and through the main gate or lobby to get to the beach. The beach is wonderful but there are many hotels with the same walk to this beach that are just a few dollars more and include a kitchen area. If I go back, I'll go to a different hotel with a room with a kitchen. It would be nice to have two cabana rooms sharing the same deck/patio area (they are covered). Beware, if you get a room in the "tower," many have not been updated and the side with doors is glassed in. The hotel is a short walk from dive shops and town. It is probably less than a mile from the port so no taxi is needed if you don't mind the walk.

Shopping tip:
Short walk from hotel
Go the the grocery store boarding the square to buy water, soda, and some food. Also has people selling home made food at the square very cheaply. Getting a golf cart may be a fun thing to do, but you may not get much of a break by getting it for the week. We got one for a day which was plenty of time to go around the island a couple of times.

Disappointing!!!! Don't waste your money at Maria's.
I have been going to Isla Mujeres since the early 90's and have stayed at various hotels, however, my experience at Maria's was disappointing the minute I arrived. They didn't have my reservation and were going to charge me for my stay even though I had already paid and had my trip itinerary. The young girl at the front desk was not rude as other reviewers have posted but she was by no means friendly. She took me to my room and tried to turn on my airconditioner which was located above the door and neither of us could reach so she started looking for the remote to turn it on. She could not locate it in my room and said she would get me one. After she left I had to get a chair and climb up to turn it on. Later that afternoon I saw her and I reminded her about the remote. No one ever brought one so I went to the desk the next day and she wrote it down with no apology but for the duration of my trip (one week) I never had a remote for my aircondidtioner. Also when I checked in, she never told me about the breakfast, what time or that I needed to go to the desk to get a ticket. She never gave me the WIFI password either. When I did go one morning for breakfast, it was juice, coffee and 2 pieces of dry toast. A little disappointing. The room had cob webs hanging from the ceiling and very dated. The lighting was terrible. With all the new hotels being built, Marias could use a major renovation and some customer service skills. The beach is absolutely beautiful as well as Buho's restaurant, however I have never had to pay for the chairs on the beach and there was no beach cocktail service. When I was checking out a women was being charged for a broken lamp in her room which was broken before she got there. She was telling them that she would never stay there again. My sentiments as well. My advice is pay a little more where you get amazing service, amenities, clean and updated rooms. I will definitely be back to Isla Mujeres time and time again but NEVER NEVER to Maria's.

Laid back island vac
Hotel location was right on the beach at the north end of the island. The hotel was older, clean & comfortable. One advantage to this hotel was being able to sit out on the balcony early in the morning or later in the evening to just relax & enjoy the breezes. It would have been a plus to not have to pay for beach chairs everyday. The island is very laid back with friendly people & numerous restaurants.

Eternal Optomist Changes Tune
this hotel is on the lower end of the satisfaction scale. the rooms were old, (we stayed in the cabanas section) and dirty and the shower leaked/dripped all night and the front desk staff was RUDE...i do not think they smiled once, with the exception of an elderly woman who was sort of nice. the room was crawling with bugs (ants and mosquitos) and the clean up staff did not pick up a wrapper that i had on the floor (under the bedside table) the entire stay. I noticed it the second day and left it there just to see if they would've gotten it; it would surely have been picked up had they swept, yet it remained there until the day we left. the "continental breakfast" consisted of white toast with butter and jelly , terrible coffee and a glass of juice. it seemed like an awful inconvenience to get someone to do something for you with a smile (for instance, give me a towel for the pool). the pool was freezing cold and the water was dirty. i suppose since it was the off season (november 7-12 was our stay) the hotel management thought it was acceptable to have men working day and night with LOUD circular saws, repairing various things for the hotel...their workshop was set up directly next to the pool and consequently next to our room. I kindly asked if they could cease this work until a different time, they did cease the sawing, but commenced with multiple hammering against some metal pieces...i seriously thought they did it on purpose! we asked if someone could help us lug our bags up to the second level and they replied "no, no one here can do that for you" and walked away. when i asked if the front desk could help me by providing me with a phone to make a local call to confirm our shuttle pick up time at puerto juarez to the airport, the girl said sure, handed me the phone and dialed for me. after i hung up, she told me that she had to charge me $350 pesos for the call. there was a smile at this time, when she told me how much she was charging me...i could not believe it. I consider myself a light hearted person who can make lemonade out of lemons, but this was a stretch. very difficult to remain positive. we love isla mujeres but will never stay here again and i advise everyone who is considering it to think twice. seriously. do not think that your experience will be different than this review. i thought that...that perhaps the people who had written negative reviews were having bad luck or a bad day...but they spoke the truth!

Sightseeing tip:
Short drive from hotel
definitely take the ride to the southern end of the island to see Garrafon park. there are breathtaking views of the more rustic side of the island, there is a lighthouse and there is a restaurant where you can sit and have a drink or a piece of fish. beautiful walking paths and vistas.

Isla Mujeres
This hotel is in the quieter section of the island but within walking distance of the town/ferry/shops/restaurants. The people are very friendly, if a little too pushy about selling their wares. We had great fresh seafood and also enjoyed the bustling narrow streets. We always felt safe (three women travelers).
