Distinguished by extraordinary oceanfrontview: every suite has a private terrace directly overlooking the ocean.

Costa Sur Resort & Spa is a beautiful 202 unit all suites resort located less than 10 minutes from the Puerto Vallartas exciting Romantic Zone. Yet the resort has the secluded feel of a tranquil "getaway -with a dream view.

The South Coast neighborhood is low key and relaxed with green, jungle covered mountains meeting the blue Pacific. Costa Sur Resort & Spa has a unique breakwater directly in front of the resort that forms a private lagoon which provides protected swimming with a beautiful beach - a great feature for families. The snorkeling is incredible with wonderfully colorful marine life.

The resort has a wonderful ocean view restaurant, "La Cascada." There is a full activities program every day at Costa Sur Resort & Spa. For example, you can learn Spanish, learn to skin dive, join in water aerobics, or study the art of making a great margarita! The hotel is famous for its convivial atmosphere and for the adventurous traveler interested in the incredible Bay of Banderas area, let the concierge staff arranges your jungle tour, whale watching, boating excursion, etc.

Some guests find it hard to leave the hotel during their stay at Costa Sur Resort & Spa, simply because it is a resort that really has it all: great views, great food and beverage and a wide beach with a beautiful lagoon. Spend the day on a lounge chair on the beach with the wait staff bringing you your favorite cold drinks and menu selections. The hotel has a mini-mart, a wonderful newly expanded spa, a fitness center and an internet center.

But for the restless, Puerto Vallarta and all of its dining and shopping are just minutes away.

Relaxing Puerta Vallarta destination!

The room at this hotel was absolutely amazing! We had never stayed in a one bedroom suite in Mexico and it was well worth the extra money. We had a full kitchen in our room so we were able to have coffee and breakfast every morning while watching the sun come up. The bed was very comfortable and everyone at the hotel was super helpful. We would absolutely stay here again!

The zoo in Puerta Vallarta is a must see! Only a 70 peso taxi ride (don't take the bus unless you want a LONG walk) and it was well worth it.

Comfy and Nice

We stayed at this hotel and it is a pretty nice place. The hotel has a restaurant with top-notch staff who are very friendly and the cooks are great. Great good quality food, taste, and presentation. Their chef must be a true professional! Front desk staff were a bit below average and have much to learn in terms of customer service. Front desk needs to learn from their Restaurant and the maid Staff, who were very pleasant and nice. Upon check-in Mr. Arturo copied our credit card and wanted us to sign a blank credit card receipt with an amount he wanted to fill out later. I refused to do so and he said I had to so I would sign it with the amount box crossed out (so that he cannot make up an amount and charge us). He was upset but moved on. The hotel resort itself is nice. It is in a place that has nothing much around and walking on the roads to get elsewhere is not easy as there are no sidewalks. Most people stay at the resort. There is a bus that goes to town, if needed, and taxi cabs available for those who want to travel around. They have a mini-mart with small verities of items. Mainly we used it to buy water. The food in there is not fresh/old and one item we got had little ants/insects inside. No issues with the water, as that was out main and only drinking source. Other than the bad food in the mini-mart and the unpleasant front desk staff, we had a great time overlooking the ocean and enjoyed wonderful restaurant food at the resort. Weather could have been a bit better but that is something I cannot complain about in rating this hotel.

Convenient Base Camp

I've stayed at Costa Sur twice. It appeals to me because it's perfectly located for a base camp or for just relaxing. It's on the beach, yet the bus stops in front and there's always a taxi available. It's far enough from town to ensure a little quiet and less vendors, yet it's an easy beach walk (about 2 mi.) to town. The pool area is relaxing and has a bar and outdoor restaurant. Popcorn is served at 5pm, and some nights have music and dancing. It attracts an older crowd, of which I'm sure I am probably MUCH too young to be part of. But I like to relax here, whether it's by the pool or from my room's ocean view balcony.

Thifty rent a car in Puerta Vallarta is total rip off!!!! Do not fall prey to their scam. They have fees you do not see until you get home on your credit card. Do not rent a car from them!!!! As a matter of fact get a taxi or a buss in Puerta Vallarta the cops are not helpful either,15 min after landing got 2000 peso speeding ticket just keeping up with traffic. Not a good start for a vacation!!!!

Quiet Getaway...Great Poolside Service

We've stayed at this hotel a few times and we keep going back because it's quiet, relaxing, has a great ocean view from every room, and the staff are very friendly and helpful. It is not as fancy as many of the other resorts in Puerto Vallarta, but it's away from the busyness and bustle of town and for us it feels like a home away from home. The restaurant is decent, and we eat there some, although we enjoy hopping the bus into town to enjoy the old-town dining experiences...especially The Pancake House. We definitely plan on returning to the Playa del Sol Costa Sur!

Hop the bus to town (7 pesos) and it will drop you off right across the street from the Pancake House. It's our one must-eat breakfast place. You need to try the black forest pancakes.

Wonderful Family Vacation

My family and i had a wonderful time at Howard Johnson's Playa del Sol Costa Sur. The hotel is very conveniently located only a 15min ride by the local bus (7 pesos per person)from Old Town in Puerto Vallarta. You can catch it right across the street and it comes about every 15 min. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The rooms and the pool area were super clean. They also offered a better exchange rate than we had seen in town. Also the view is just to die for. We even saw a whale one afternoon. We would recommend anyone to stay there and would love to go back for another visit.

Winter Getaway

We selected Howard Johnson as a change this year as previously we had stayed at the Holiday by the marina. We had seen pictures on the website and thought the place looked really nice and would be a nice change of pace. Upon arriving, we did find out that the hotel was further south of PV than we would have liked. We do spend lots of time in old PV and would have liked it to be closer walking distance. From where it is, there is no way I would walk this road or this distance. The bus rides, however, are a cheap 7 pesos to town which is well worth the experience and it only takes 5-10 minutes depending on the driver! We are more adventurous so we never spend much time at our hotels. We found our room to be clean and kept up. The view was fantastic and was able to watch the whales in the mornings if we happened to still be there. The shower was really nice but don't believe it will have to exfoliate for quite awhile with that water pressure!! We frequented the dining area twice and found the servers and cooks to be rather nice. We always felt welcome and were shown a good time. The day before we left we had trouble checking in at the airport and the front desk helped us for about 40 minutes talking with the airport getting everything straightened out so we were able to leave the following morning. Also the beds at this hotel did not seem near as hard as some we've been on and were actually quite comfortable. We have no complaints with this stay. Keep in mind this is not a 5-star resort but for the money, it was well worth it. Our biggest concerns are always the staff and cleanliness and these definitely met our expectations. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

Dining tip: Short drive from hotel

Take the bus to old PV. You will be dropped off on Constitution street. Continued north until you get to Serdan. Take a right and there is a Mariscos Taco stand on the North side of the street. It is run by Leo & Estella. They have the best shrimp tacos, and smoked marlin chili relenos! They are also very nice people. They don't speak english well but with some help of others, we really enjoyed spending time at this stand.
