In the heart of Amsterdam, just behind the Royal Palace on the Dam Square and next to the Magna Plaza shopping centre you will find the monumental building of Hotel 'Die Port van Cleve'. A hotel that combines history and hospitality with style and modern comfort. The rooms are all decorated with a touch of Dutch history and references to the authentic Delft Blue tile fresco in the bar. The history of the hotel dates back to 1864 when G.A. Heineken opened his first Heineken brewery in the building. Due to the city council filling in the canal in front of the building in the name of modernisation, he moved to the present location on the Stadhouderskade. The Hulscher brothers continued the business and on 5 September 1870 a unique beer house, called Die Port van Cleve, opened its doors. It did not take long for it to evolve from a beer house into a restaurant with the 'De Poort' brasserie serving typical Dutch dishes and what were to become the famous numbered steaks. These steaks have been served since 1870 and in 1997 the magic number of 6,000,000 numbered and certificated steaks was reached. Evolving from a beer house to a Dutch steakhouse, it was not long until the first rooms made the building the Die Port van Cleve hotel. The name Die Port van Cleve comes from a memorial stone with the inscription 'Die Port van Cleve' which was found during the takeover by the Hulscher brothers. Some unchanged features include the unique frontage, which has listed building status, and also the unique interior of De Blauwe Parade bar-bodega. The Delft blue tiles in the Bodega date back to 1887. Hotel 'Die Port van Cleve' now consists of 122 comfortable rooms, Brasserie 'De Poort, known for the traditional Dutch as well as international dishes, Bar-Bodega 'De Blauwe Parade' and several multi-functional meeting rooms for 2 up to 50 persons. The top location of the hotel and its history makes it popular with leisure travelers, but it is also appreciated by business travelers for its warm, personalized service and modern comforts. NOTE: There's a 5 % city/tourist tax per room per night which needs to be paid upon checkout.

Coffee Corner/ Bar 'De Hooiberg'
At Coffee corner/ Bar 'De Hooiberg' the staff will gladly welcome you for a relaxing cup of coffee, tea, appetizer or a digestive. With a street front location it is great to watch the people pass by in the busy centre of Amsterdam city. This historic bar is located next to the Brasserie 'De Poort' and was once part of the Heineken brewery, which shows from the wall frescoes and wooden floors. Guests can stop in for drinks or light snacks from late morning through early evening.

Not a bad a Hotel

I kind of enjoyed my stay at the hotel, but I will have to say that their toilet facilities where pretty bad for European standards and it does let them down. But if that doesn’t border you that much, you will enjoy your stay. P.S. There reception staffs were exceptionally helpful.

Disappointed

We were especting something magical - give the hotel's history and promotional copy - but were disappointed. The location is excellent - close to Dam Square and the shops & restaurants as well as being in walking distance of 'must-sees' like Anne Frank's House. Our room was extraordinarily small: my wife and I kept bumping into each other when moving around the bed or trying to get clothes from the wardrobe. This really spoiled the whole hotel experience for us. We had intended dining in the well-promoted Restaurant but when we arrived there were just two tables occupied and a dreadful lack of atmosphere. Instead we had the 'numbered steak' in the bar - which had marginally more activity. The staff generally were pleasant and helpful - but the items mentioned above meant a special birthday surprise fell flat on its face.

Ideally situated !

Had a 2 night stopover. My cousin was allowed to share my room at very little cost! Staff were excellent, even helped this 76yr old with her wifi ! The hotel is beautifully situated near everything, we had a wonderful 2 days stay. Would certainly recommend to anyone. High standards throughout. We had a very hectic day with 2 coach and a canal trip, but a great way to see Amsterdam. Even took a walk around the Red Light District at night! Very safe, and a real eye opener for 2 old ladies! Only thing wrong...not enough time, MUST come back again soon!

Nightlife tip: Short walk from hotel

Red light district is a must for newcomers to Amsterdam. Also a canal trip at night is wonderful. Walking shoes, an umbrella and dressing in layers is a must but fun!

Great start to a vacation

This hotel was great! The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. The dinner in the hotel restaurant was excellent, with great service. The hotel is conveniently located in downtown, an easy 20-minute walk from Central Train Station. The room was small (some might say cramped) but well-equipped and very clean. We were very comfortable. We would definitely stay here again if we return to Amsterdam.

Sightseeing tip: Long walk from hotel

We walked everywhere, including to the Rijksmuseum, Rembrandt House, Anne Frank House, and Resistance Museum. While some, like the Rijksmuseum might be too far for some people, it is doable on foot.

Perfect Stop

Aside from the tram track construction happening directly in front of the hotel, it was perfect. My 11-year old son and I walked from Centraal station to the hotel with our baggage - easy and close!! It is the perfect location for sight seeing, shopping, museums, etc. the room was small but comfortable, extremely clean, and perfect for jet-lagging travelers. The staff is fabulous and the breakfast was delicious. Great location, great staff, clean, lovely. Enjoy your stay!!

Dissapointment in Amsterdam

Although we had fully prepaid our room two months before arriving, we were surprised when we got there with the news that they had overbooked the hotel and we had to stay the first night in a different hotel way out of town. Therefore, out of our two night stay, we spent each in a different hotel and had to spend our little time in Amsterdam moving from one hotel to the other rather than enjoying the city sights. Never received any apologies from the manager nor any compensation for our inconvenience.

Great location hotel

Fantastic location, close to places of interest and good travel links. Rooms were a decent size and very clean. Towels need to be upgraded to make bathroom amenities truely 4 star. Would choose this hotel for future trips.
