Hampshire (formerly Eden) Hotel Review

Location is excellent--within walking distance of the various museums and shopping. Tram lines galore in the immediate neighborhood but be sure to check out information on the new "O-V Chipkaart" which will allow you to travel on public conveyance--tram, bus and railroad--at a very reasonable price. Hotel is small but comfortable if all you want to do is sleep. Cleanliness was so-so with attention to floors/carpets needed. Breakfast was great, but NOT included in the price, which was disappointing. Costs an additional 12 Euros per day and that's NOT worth it given the price of the hotel room in the first place. Staff was helpful and friendly--even saved me some money by recommending use of this versus that. From all indications, this hotel was frequented by professional (not young people) which reduces night time door slamming, etc. A good stay!

Money-saving tip: Not Applicable

Use the tram to get from here to there. Get an "O-V Chipkaart." You can get one at the Railroad Station or most bookstores. Card costs 17.50 Euros but has an initial 10 Euro deposit already on it. To add additional money, go to the railroad station. This method is used throughout the Netherlands now. You can buy a "one-way" ticket from the tram drivers but the price far exceeds that needed when the Chipkaart is used. Check it out.

Good priced hotel

A bit wary cos of the previous comments about the carpets. There was a funny smell but I think that was cos they had tried to clean the carpets. Ours was ok. The smell soon disappeared. Breakfast is 15euros. Book it at reception the day before and you get 2euros 50 off. Staff very helpful. We were there 3 nights and had a towel change daily. We would definately come back here again.

The smallest room in a good hotel

I'm glad I did an upgrade on the bed and room size in the Eden Theatre District Hotel when I was booking this trip. Otherwise I might have needed a shoe horn to get into the room. But I knew fully well that this was not a luxury suite, simply a room to sleep and take a shower. The room was clean, on the inner courtyard and therefore exceptionally quiet. Yet, itwas right on the edge of het Leidseplein, one of the most convenient locations in the heart of Amsterdam. The breakfast (E10.50) is solid and tasty. The hotel is just steps away from the tram lines that get you all over the city. So, if you can stand a small room, as well as a small shower, then this is the place to stay.

Great Location

This 3 star hotel is in perfect location, 5 minute walk to Leidesplein, the Bulldog, the Holland Casino and a slightly longer walk to the Van Gogh and Rijksmuseum. Also it's within walking diistance of the Anne Frank House, though it's about a 1.2 km walk down Prinzengracht. All attractions are very well sign-posted around the city. The hotel was clean and comfortable and I would most definitely stay there again. Good value for the money.

Room was TINY but close to many things

We stayed for four nights, so had plenty of time to evaluate the facilities. While clean, the room is probably the smallest I've ever stayed in and it was difficult for two people to occupy space at the same time. Some staff members were able to recommend places for dinner, others suggested we walk around the corner and see what was available. The hotel is close to Leidseplein, which is a major tourist hub, but not close enough that the crowds and noise are a problem. Oh, and if you order anything from the bar, you will find there is a 50% "service charge." So spend wisely.

Amsterdam....my new favorite city

Pretty nice hotel, great location (3 blocks from Leidspeiln Square and the American) FREE CAPPICIONOS!!!I can't shout about this more...delicious coffee any time of the day or night, fresh ground for each cup...room was small, but typical for hotels in the city (it's and old city...the hotels are converted old buildings...)This one has an elevator (albeit the SMALLEST eleavator I've ever encountered...)many places don't have the great feature...the stairs are so narrow in these buildings they move in using the original hooks on the front of the buildings...so think about how nice the elevator is ;o)

True European Hotel

It took us a while to find our hotel. We checked our bags and explored the city. When we got back, room was ready, gentleman at the desk was a little snooty. Room was small - two twin beds and a tiny bathroom. The shower was tiny - my (new) husband is a big guy - if he turned around the wrong way, he hit the faucet with his hip and the hot water was scalding in a second. Wasn't much room, but it was clean and comfortable. When we left later than night, the girl at the front desk was much nicer and gave us some great city info and maps. Close to Leidesplein and the Canal Tour.

Nightlife tip: Short walk from hotel

Leidesplein was only a block or two away. VondelPark was close too. You could walk to Dam Square or the Red Light District, but the trams and buses were much easier. Tram stopped right outside the hotel.
