AMS in winter, you've got to love it!
Spent five nights at the NH Doelen Hotel Amsterdam. It is the oldest hotel in the city, with a very interesting history... Rembrandt stayed there while painting one of his masterpieces; the Beatles also stayed there. This hotel is very conveniently located just a few blocks S of the city center so one can walk everywhere, or one can also rent a bike as most people in town ride bikes no matter what weather. The Doelen Hotel is on a corner by one of the many canals in the city, and some rooms have amazing views of the canal. The hotel is just two blocks from Rembrandt Plein , a nice square/plaza with a big statue of the famous painter, and with cozy cafes and restaurants. My g-friend and I walked everywhere within a 1 mi radius and saw everything there is to see in the city: museums, cozy bars, cafes, canals "galore", coffee shops where you can smoke ghanja if you're so inclined to, it's legal there, but only inside the coffee shops! Everyone we talked to spoke English, and people were friendly and helpful. It was my first time in AMS and will definitely not be the last. I want to add that the hotel staff were very accomodating, knowledgeable of the city and pleasant.

Great Location
This is a nice hotel very centrally located in the city. It is walking distance to most all the great neighborhoods and museums. The room was very small but comfortable none the less. I have no complaints and the staff was very pleasant and attentive.

Great location
Location was great. I was able to walk to every attraction. I took train from airport for less than $5. I walked from train station in less than 20 min with my roller board. Staff was informative and friendly. The view on one side faces another building but looks nice. I was ok with that. It is 30 euro/night to go to the canal side. I was not in the room much except for sleep. The bathroom was pretty good. The room was kind of plain. The business internet computer was free but you need to use 15 min vouchers. The Coffee Shop attached to the building is great. I preferred to get coffee and apple pie there than use the hotel. The TV was an old small CRT kind but I did get CNN and about 4 English speaking channels. I would definitely stay there again.

Money-saving tip:
Long walk from hotel
Take train to and from airport, $5 each way. Make sure you leave early to go to airport. There is help at airport that will explain train and hotel location. 20 min walk, approx 0.8 miles distance.

Great Time
Room with a view
The hotel was ideal. One reason we chose this hotel was the old histrical building, but never was there a doubt that it meet all the amenities necessary for this modern time. We had a room that was over the canal and it was wonderful for city's weekend festiviies. This location was only a 10 minuite walk from central station and central to most all museums. We would highly recommand this hotel.

Fair hotel, great location
By US standards, this place is just okay. The room I was in was outdated in several respects. Overall, it was clean and comfortable, though. The hotel's real advantage was in its value for its location. I would recommend it.

A lovely place to stay in Amsterdam
During my week-long EU vacation, this was honestly one of the highlights of the trip. Sadly, before arriving in Amsterdam my trip was delayed by a blizzard, knocking 2 nights off of my stay. As a consolation for this, the friendly and helpful concierge offered my friend and I an upgrade to the "bridal suite"! The room was very clean with a great view of the canals. Although not the most modern hotel I've stayed in, I loved the decor and old-fashioned charm. The location was great; only a 10-15 min. walk to the train station and close to sightseeing areas. The cafe off of the lobby also had good coffee, an added bonus. I would highly recommend this hotel for single travelers, couples or friends!
