Incompetent staff

Staff was incompetent - "complimentary" breakfast may cost you 25 euro per person. We were told by three employees including one at official hotel information desk, where to go for complimentary breakfast, than we were charged 25 euro per person. Charges were finally dropped at the checkout after we dispute them. It was not easy we were told there was no manager and that nothing could be done. Staff at the hospitality lounge were almost hostile making you feel guilty if you take one peanut to many. Fitness room was equipped rather poorly and view from it was at the back ally behind the hotel, where people were smoking crack and doing other things - all in proximity of (25 yards ) from main entrance with attendants on duty.

Perfect location and accomodations

Excellent location - less than 3 blocks from train station and in heart of city. We had one room with a king bed and the other with 2 doubles. Rooms were good size, baths were very adequate with wash clothes and hair dryers and ther was a large flat screen TV. Comparable to nice hotel in large US city. Conceige services were very helpful. Since we are rewards member we had free internet plus access to member lounge with free drinks and breakfast as well. Would definitely recommend.

Acceptable standard of hotel but not 5 *

Good clean hotel but advertised as a five star which it clearly is not ! Staff were friendly and helpful Noise from the next room could have been irritating and should have been better insulated. It was mainly due to the interconnecting door not been properly sound-proofed. The bar area was fine but seemed empty most of the time and perhaps lacked a warm inviting atmosphere. Overall quite good and anyone visiting would be reasonably pleased but not exceptional It was located within striking distance of most things.

If you go to the Anne Frank museum arrive at about 8:30. There will already be others queuing but nothing compared to what happens later when the queues flow around the block!

Lovely Hotel/Great Location

Hotel is lovely, staff was helpful. I will say that the internet is very expensive. Suggest buying the internet cards to use in the business area. Right behind hotel is grocery store to purchase breakfast items, snacks, etc.

Great hotel, great location

Great location. We took many day trips outside of Amsterdam via the train which was two blocks from the hotel. Eating out was very easy too since there are numerous restaurants within a block of the hotel (plus McDonald's for the kids one block away). Hotel had great security since you couldn't use the elevator without your room key. Hotel was clean and staff was extremely helpful and nice. We would definitely stay there again.

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

To save money on eating out, we went to a grocery store behind the hotel on Nieuwendijk to get breakfast items. You can also buy the same Dutch cookies at a fraction of the price that all the souvenir shops sell.

Great but expensive internet access

Everything is great about this hotel - great location, nice service and people, clean and comfort room and bedding. however, there is no WiFi signal in the room, internet access is expensive, eg. 7 Euro/hour from room. The free internet is only available in the lobby. There is free/weak WiFi signal in the lobby and four computers with limited free access time in the lobby. It is a bit disappointing not having free WiFi for such a great hotel.

Great hotel, outstanding staff.

The Renaissance Hotel is well located and well within walking distance of the central train station. The stafff is business-like but friendly and they are there to help you when you need it.I was under the impression that breakfast was included in the price of the room. Unfortunately it seems that it wasn't and the [...] confirmation e-mail printout did not reference it. Please try and offer this option in the future.

Really nice hotel

We stayed two nights at the renaissance after a 12 day cruise and were pretty spent. Check in isnt untill 3pm but they gave us our room at 9am. We only had two days to see a list of sighths I had written down. Our concierge set us up with a tour that covered all the sights outside the city. Then he built us a map to get to all the sights within the city. He also got our tickets online to the Anne Frank Haus and the Van Gogh Museum so we could avoid the gigantic lines. The hotel is three blocks from Central Station. A perfect distance from the Red Light Disrict, where as you can walk there easily but no noise carries to rooms, and we were there on a soccer weekend. There are dozens of restaurants within a three block radius. I found Amsterdam to be a really cool city and am already planning to return. Unless a fantastic deal comes up on an alternate property, Thr Renaissance is where I will stay.
