Very attractive hotel
The hotel is located at the north end of the viaduct, the port area, and is close to all the restaurants and bars there. The first room we were shown was just OK. The room was bright and attractive, but it faced a parking lot full of buses which we were warned would be noisy in the morning. We were lucky enough to have our request for a room change honored, and we were upgraded to a much larger and nicer room. Whereas the first room had a shower area without any enclosure (perhaps it was a handicap room), the new room had a lovely glassed in shower with strong spray and rain shower heads, a large soaking tub, and nice amenities (but no lotion.) The pool is a wonderful single lane lap pool, with adjacent jacuzzi, right off the exercise room. The only downside to this arrangement is that the main floor lobby corridor to the restaurant smells of chlorine. The service at the restaurant was slow and friendly but in need of training. The food was very good when it came. I'm sure the water view rooms are very nice but we didn't spring for the extra cost.

Kermadec on the waterfront was very good. Portside next to the hotel is great for breakfast (and cheaper than the hotel).

Excellent hotel but lacks some basic services
If you want a great and comfortable hotel room this is a perfect choice. The amenities are delux, the bed the best I slept in entire NZ, the bathroom super-clean, large and modern (great rainshower). The view from the harbor-side rooms is spectacular. The lobby is inviting, trendy hip with candles and pools. But if you want services, this is not a place to stay. No phones, no room service, no wine in the minibar. No pool. 10 minutes walk to downtown but a beautiful and quiet location.

Perfect for my needs
I was in town for the Auckland Marathon. The staff were wonderful. They let me check out after noon. The concierge's recommendations were spot on. The room is one of the most comfortable and best located rooms I have stayed in: large bed that was more comfortable than my home bed; ample space; small balcony; separate bath and shower; and the shower had both a regular, high pressure head as well as a rain shower. The location is right on the waterfront, and everything I needed was within a 10 minute walk. Highly recommended.
