Fantastic boutique hotel

Was in town only for the night as part of a connection out of Christchurch airport to Singapore. Debated staying at the a/p hotel, but have had too many nights of that and so - unaware that the town was decimated by the earthquake - reserved at the George. Initially, was concerned it was a mistake when I realized the town is still recovering, I'm *truly* glad I made the trip. The George is delightful. Unlike many boutiques which rely on being small rather than tasteful, everything about the George is aesthetically pleasing. The lobby and related bar both invite you to settle in, relax with a drink, and simply be soothed after a day's work and travel. Like stepping into a pleasant scene in a movie. And the front staff were all excellent, including recommending a local restaurant - Cooking with Gas - that was fantastic. They really went out of their way to be kind, and you could tell it was earnest. It was nice they understood I wanted to get out of the hotel, though I sense the hotel itself also had great restaurants based on a glance at the menu (innovative cuisine by description, though I did not eat there). Outside, the hotel is nicely situated opposite a very large park. Unlike the U.S., where I'm accustomed to crowding, this was a wide-open expanse, beautifully appointed by trees in arboretum fashion, with plenty of space to enjoy it and not a single commercial interruption. Perfect for jogging, or taking a long stroll, both of which I did, and adjoined on one border by a medieval-looking college that makes for great viewing as well. An easy place to put together a 5-mile jog along the river, and one with views you'll enjoy. The rooms themselves were also quite nice. Continued the general aesthetic of the place, highly pleasing with good modern appointments. Overall, the stay was a relief, and I wish the best for the people in Christchurch and this hotel; they were all wonderful. Matt.

Newly refurbished, the room was

Newly refurbished, the room was brilliant. All staff were particularly friendly and eager to help. Location was also excellent with only a short and pleasant walk to the centre of the city. And definitely take advantage of the restaurants; we only used "50 on the Park" but the food was absolutely first rate. Can highly recommend the George Hotel on our experience.
