Wonderful base camp

We used the hotel as a base for side trips so having the train and tram close by was very helpful. We could have used a car rental dealership close by.
Even though the trains, trams, and buses were practically right outside our window, the sound was not a problem.

We arrived by traini from the airport. Signage from the main train terminal was not sufficient to guide us to the hotel. We had to ask directions.
Once at the hotel, everything was fine. We enjoyed our room's location and requested the same room for our return visit to Oslo.
The breakfasts provided were good, but on our first trip to the dining area, we didn't find the second floor site for breakfast. Again, we had to ask. On other trips, we knew where to go and enjoyed the wide variety of offerings

Two Days In Oslo

The hotel is in a great location. The trams and bus stops are within a block and the subway was two blocks away across from the National Theater. The Aker Brygge and Akershus Fortress are just a few blocks away as well. There is a beautiful park just across the street from the main entrance. It was a great place to sit and people watch in the evening. The National Museum containing Munch's "The Scream" is also just a few blocks away. Even the main tourist information center is on the same block. I can't say anything negative about the hotel. The staff was very attentive and even let me keep my bags in the room until I was scheduled to leave around five that evening. I did not eat in the onsite restaurant though. There were so many to choose from on Stortingsgate.

My husband and I traveled to Olso for 3 nights in March 2010 (we're currently living in Helsinki), and we really enjoyed our stay at Thon! Note that there is another Thon near this one, closer to the central station, that looks to be more of a city hotel (we went there first on accident); I would recommend this one based on first impressions.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by a nice girl who upgraded us to an apartment room; the view from the room was fantastic, and although there wasn't adequate lounge space (Scandinavian minimalist style), it was a good home base for a busy weekend. They were also very helpful throughout our stay, providing us with directions to the ski slopes, etc.
The breakfast at this hotel is key, since Oslo is prohibitively expensive; fill up in the morning on delicious Norwegian pancakes and other hot selections so that you can just get one meal out per day. Also, the round-the-clock coffee/latte machine and biscotti downstairs are great.
The harbour, Karl Johans Gate (the main drag) and many museums are also located within walking distance. The only thing negative I would say is that although it's located in a good spot for sightseeing, exploring and transportation, the few blocks that take you from Johans Gate to the hotel can be a little shady at night.
We would definitely stay again!

This is an excellent hotel. It is very close to the Toyen subway station, which means you have easy access to the center of town. The Munch museum is within easy walking distance of the hotel.

The area is in the immigrants district of Oslo. The room was good and the hotel is perfectly located near the metro. Plenty of nice shops around. We're going to stay there again if we can get it for the same price as this time.

Modern Hotel in the heart of Oslo

The location of this hotel is perfect: 5 minute walk from central train station, and only a block from the main street, Karl Johns Gate.
The staff was extremely helpful and accomidating and the included dinner and breakfast were extensive and tasty.
The room was modern and new, very clean. If I'm ever back in Oslo, I am staying here again.

We had to learn how to operate the lighting system - too modern. But absolutely loved it, great views of children's parade groups in native costumes on May 17 National Holiday. So close to everything by Oslo Pass using great bus system. Easy walk to Central Station to take Flytoget fast train to airport at end. Would go back to this hotel in a heartbeat.

Perfect location in central Oslo. Nice clean rooms and good breakfast at a very reasonable price. Tram does run just outside so can be noisy on lower floors at the front. Staff very friendly and helpful.

WE ONLY STAYED OVERNIGHT. THE STAFF WAS VERY NICE AND HELPFUL. THE MOTEL IS SOMEWHAT HARD TO FIND, AS IS EVERYTHING IN OSLO. THE ROOMS ARE VERY EUROPIAN, SO DIFFERENT FOR AMERICAN TRAVELERS. WE DID NOT HAVE TIME TO TAKE IN MANY SIGHTS, BUT THE MOTEL WAS NEAR THE WATERFRONT AREA AND HAD LOTS OF DINING.

The Thon Vika Atrium is very well placed in Oslo. It is right next to restaurants and shops at Akker Brygge and close to the airport train, buses, trams and ferries. The rooms are somewhat small, but have everything you need. The breakfast was wonderful, the hotel staff were fantastic. My only complaint is that the rooms were not so sound proof and I was woken a few times by people coming in and making noise in the halls. Overall though, I would recommend this hotel to people visiting Oslo.

Hotel was clean and quiet. Location excellent. Breakfast excellent. Room was small. Bed was not a US size Queen but a Euro Queen which is a double. 140cm is not big. Go for a king or 2 twins

This was a very simple hotel. The room was clean and fairly spacious, as was the bathroom. It was fairly well located (5 minutes to the national art gallery, 10-15 minutes to the Rathaus), but was cut of a bit from the main part of the city by the first ring, a busy driving street. The breakfast was tasty and ample.

Gutes Hotel in sehr Guter Lage. Man kommt am Hauptbahnhof an - geht durch die schöne Mall OsloCity und kommt beim Nordausgang direkt gegenüber des Hotels raus. Lage also Einfach nur Klasse. Frühstück war sehr gut. das Interieur unseres Zimmer war etwas "überholt" aber funktional. Dachfensterrollo war defekt. Restschmutz in der Toilette - Zimmer sonst sauber. Personal freundlich und hilfsbereit. Trotz der Mängel würde ich es wieder buchen.

We purchased the 72 hour Oslo Pass and found it very worthwhile. We vistied as many museums and sites as possible using the pass for free entry and free transportation. One boat tour through the fjord with lunch (prawns) was worth the cost of Pass. Highpoints were the boat tour, the Resistance Museum, the castle, the Munch Museum, and the sculpture garden. Hotel was a plus location next to the National Museum and near subway and buses.

Good location next to National Art Museum but it was also next to the tram which was very loud. Room was not maintained very well, lights were not working. Maid overlooked that fact that we were out of hand soap and tissues for two days. On the good side, the breakfast was excellent and the evening light buffet was very nice.

Good location great breakfast

Thon Gyldenlove is on a convenient street walking distance from downtown but sufficiently far away that its in a real neighborhood and not touristy. The breakfast was spectacular with pickled herring and other Norwegian treats. Only downside was a bit of noise at night from the bar below, on one side of the hotel. All together, I highly recommend it.

A very nice Hotel! 7/10 in its class! Great breakfast and good service! There is, however, one thing we found annoying, the wash is outside the toilet, in the main room, and there is a window which enables you to see the other person on the toilet. A bit uncomfortable to sit there knowing the other person in the room could watch you at any time. So if you are going to stay here, bring someone you are comfortable with:)

The best hotel in Oslo

This hotel is fantastic to stay in. It has a very warm feel to it and very relaxing. The staff are really nice and helpful. The food is excellent and you can make waffles everyday and the hotel supplies a buffet tea included in the price. Have stayed here twice and hopefully will be back again.

far from the central station in term of walking.
No bath shampoo, no kettle, no...don't expect anything.
I didnot find that breakfast not included when I booked through the orbitz. U have to pay extra 70 nok for it.
Although it's very clean, I am very disappointed. I won't book this hotel if there is any chance.

Great location, decent accomodations

The hotel was in a great location very near the Karl Johans Gate (main street of downtown Oslo) and even nearer to the Palace. There is a small park around the Palace that you can run in if you're interested. The room itself was a bit outdated but they were undergoing renovations of various floors of the hotel while we were there so I can only assume they hadn't gotten to our floor yet. We had a 19th floor room that overlooked the town and provided for a great view. There is also a bar on the top floor overlooking the Oslo fjord and the town. It offered great views assuming you were willing to pay $15 a beer (which is pretty standard anywhere you go in Norway!). The staff was excellent and nearly everyone spoke perfect English. They called cabs for us and arranged for the very convenient airport bus to pick us up at the front door. Oh and pay attention to the signs in the bathroom telling you to keep the door closed during a shower. The steam from our shower set off a silent fire alarm and warranted a visit from the manager. Apparently steam causes fires in Norway????

Classic nothing is included and then charge like wounded bulls. Parking was more expensive than anywhere else in Oslo. The room was great though. The reception staff were very good but the dining room staff were hopeless. It was literally impossible to get a table because noone was even talking to guests who were waiting. We gave up after 30 minutes.

Hotel itself is really excellent, but the location close to Oslo Central Station makes it somewhat less desireable due to the sort of people frequenting the station area.
