The Gallery Cafe & Cigar Bar
The Gallery Cafe is a wonderfully cosmopolitan and alternative venue for a chic corporate lunch for up to 80, or, with the enclosed terraces hived off for intimacy, you can celebrate any occasion privately, with music beamed to you, to complement the fine, South African soul food dishes. But just below, overlooking Long Street, the relaxed Cigar Bar perches above the thronging crowds the perfect watering hole for the weary traveler wanting to refresh, watch sport beamed in by satellite on the plasma screen or discuss the day's events over a thirst-quenching cocktail with attitude, while watching the passing parade!

Urban Chic Boutique Hotel, Long Street

(2) of us: (1) age 26, (1) age 32, both single males - in Cape Town for a bit of business, then the rest of a week for fun. The hotel is on Long Street - a very loud, noisy street ALL NIGHT LONG, and there is little in the way of noise protection just by being inside the hotel. There are bars and very loud clubs on all sides. (A perfect comparison would be Bourbon Street in New Orleans, although Long Street is louder.) Plan to bring ear plugs and eye shades. We were also there in February (which means Summer there). The hotel advertises air conditioning, but do not plan on it providing ample cooling or air circulation. You will sweat! The rooms have an open bathroom-to-bedroom plan (no door), so don't expect privacy if sharing with a friend or business associate. The manageress (in her position because her cousin is the owner)is not experienced in hospitality, so consider that. However, the small staff are great. They just have no authority to do anything. The food and beverage in the hotel are only mediocre. Much better fare at better prices can be found in any direction just stepping out the front door of the hotel. It is a boutique hotel, and we are accustomed to them and usually enjoy them. The above may seem like a litany of complaints, when it is rather intended to give prospective guests just the plain facts. For comfort, value for price, (and a bit of peace and quiet if you ever intend to sleep... we didn't plan or do much sleeping), we would recommend staying elsewhere (and that means away from Long Street). Inexperienced travelers may also find the large numbers of beggars and con artists on Long Street alarming (as on any equivalent street in a "fun" quarter of a large city). Although disappointed in the hotel (bit of exaggeration in their photos, description and advertising... but that is P.R.), we can't say we left "unhappy". We probably wouldn't stay there again - except to visit some of the nice staff. However, we recommend anyone who hasn't stayed at the Urban Chic Boutique do some research on Long Street, the hotel's location, convenience (or lack of) to other things planned, etc. before choosing to book. There are better values for money not far away. Hope this helps.

Money-saving tip: Short drive from hotel

Long Street (the hotel is corner of Long and Pepper) is, unlike a lot of busy streets in cities, not expensive. Camp's Bay, which has the touristy clubs and restaurants on the beach, and the Waterfront (where the aquarium, shopping malls, etc. are) are more expensive. Kalk Bai (Chalk Bay), which you can reach by train (but caution public transport) is nice beach side (breaching sharks) with quaint shops and inexpensive food and drink. Caution in choosing a taxi (they must have meters with tamper-resistant sides to be legitimate) and forget the notion of pedestrian right-of-way. We wouldn't recommend the shared rides (mini-van taxis) for inexperienced travelers.

Nice Hotel Lousy / Noisy Location

This is a very nice 4 star hotel but it is on Long Street which is extremely noisy until 3AM or so. There are a lot of open bars in the area. I would suggest staying on the waerfront.

Great for couples and singles

This is a great hotel at a fun and vibrant location. Suitable for couples and singles. I wouldn't recommend this location for families or business travelers. The staff is friendly and helpful and the four star rating is accurate. The beds and sheets are very comfortable and if you're lucky your room will have a view of Table Mountain. Because it's situated directly on Long Street in the nightlife hub of the city, be warned that the street noise is loud and goes till about 4AM every night. No kidding. Hot breakfast is included and it's quite good. Way better than continental breakfast. Internet is available for a reasonable fee. Inline with the local internet cafe rates. If you rent a car, the hotel has free parking.

Bring ear plugs! That helped me rest comfortably even when the street noise went on till 4AM every night.
