1/2 the rooms are nice, 1/2 aren't.
This hotel is in barajas, only 5 minutes to airport so that's good. This is my 9'th time staying in this hotel, each time the night before flying home to the US of A. I discovered on this trip that there are 2 types of rooms, ones that are recently remodeled and large, and ones that are much older and much smaller. Both cost the same so if you stay here, make sure to ask whether you're getting a room in the newer part. Believe me, it's a HUGE difference. The staff was very unfriendly this time, totally uninterested in helping or answering questions. In most all "better" hotels like this one a standard first question at check in after you give your name is "Hello Mr. Smith, is this your first time here?" followed by 'Welcome' or 'Welcome Back'. The check in lady said neither and just took my name, typed on the computer, and handed me the key card. Geesh, you would think that since this is my NINTH time staying here there might be some kind of friendlier greeting, not to mention she dumped us into the older dirtier part of the hotel (room 260), on a night (Fri. Aug. 5,2011), when they were probably less than half full. So, if you don't mind rude unfriendly staff, and the risk of getting an old semi dirty room, this is a nice hotel.

It's OK
The room was clean and large. There was only one common computer to print out airlines tickets- we had to wait 15 minutes for our turn to use it. The restaurant was WAY over priced and the food choice minimal.

Okay for airport hotel
The shuttle service ran every 15 minutes & was very convenient for an overnight between flights. Unfortunately the pool was already closed for the season & the A/C in the room wasn't working.

Great for Madrid Airport travellers
This is a great hotel if you arrive late into Madrid or if you have to catch an early flight out of Madrid. The shuttle service to the airport is efficient (although the drivers are a bit grumpy) and runs about every 15 minutes. I have stayed at this hotel three times in the past two months and was satisfied each time.

Melia Barajas
The hotel is close to the airport and it's appearance is deceiving from the outside. It looks a little rundown but the inside lobby is more modern and the appearance is superb. I was expecting the staff to speak a little more english since they are a 4 star hotel, but that was not the case. The TV in our room had a broken cable going to the wall, so we had to find a way to fix it ourselves since we were too tired to call up the staff. There aren't very many places to eat close by so it feels like the only option is the hotels room service if you aren't ready to eat during Spanish meal times. Overall the stay was nice save for a couple of small complaints.

If you need to spend a night near the airport.... you should consider this place. Very clean, nice staff and just 10 minutes from the airport and the Barajas metro station. Not much going on around the sleepy neighborhood. Just remember that the hotels near the airport offer a courtesy shuttle to anf from. Jumped in a cab and the driver was a bit irritated that he had to drive me to the hotel. They don't make money on these short trips. Catch the shuttle.
