The mausoleums outside of Haghia Sofia are free, empty of tourists, exquisitely beautiful, and wonderful places to see the architecture tilework and calligraphy on a human scale, as well as a place for quiet meditation.

Great location, requires about 7 minutes walking from Sultanahmet train station. Hotel was alright. Its a modern facility with required amenities at the side. Hotel offers simple and basic breakfast, nothing opulent. Staffing is very friendly and helpful. Room was clean. Bed comfort was ok, but the pillows were very uncomfortable to sleep on.

Very nice hotel
This was my first visit to Turkey. I am really glad that I selected this hotel. To me the first and foremost thing about this hotel is the quality of its personnel. All of them -- from managers to the staff at breakfast -- were extremely nice, friendly and helpful. I commend them for doing such a fantastic job. Among rest of the things, the hotel has a great location and fulfilled my purpose because it was at a walking distance from major historic sites. I had a Ferman room which was one floor below the main lobby. It was neat and clean and in excellent shape. My minor suggestion is that though the writing desk has an ottoman, a higher chair would make it more convenient to use. The TV was multilingual with English programming also. However, an additional English news channel would further increase its utility. Before I booked the room, I had read some reviews about the noise from the nearby trains and was skeptical about selecting it. But in my room I hardly noticed any real noise. Though frequently trains passed by but in fact the A/C in my home is much louder than the sounds that I heard from these trains. Even that sound was only a few seconds long and I rarely heard it on weekend. They never woke me up. Some reviewers also complained about chants coming from mosques. I think it depends on how you see them. They didn't bother me because I saw them as part of the fascinating Istanbul experience. I enjoyed the breakfast at rooftop terrace with views of the sea and the mosque. Someone had complained about the problem of birds “sharing” your food. I noticed that the problem was not at the buffet tables (because they were covered). The little problem was at the guests’ table. But I took care of it by simply covering my food with another plate if I had to leave my table, and hoped that birds would forgive me for this rudeness. Overall I liked this hotel and will stay there again.

Short walk from hotel
There is a travel agency right around the corner. I arranged with them for return to the airport. Their shuttle picked me up from the hotel at the appointed time and it cost me only ten Lira (if I recall correctly it was Lira not Euro) which was far cheaper than a taxi fare.

Centrally located - ideal for
Centrally located - ideal for the main sites of Istanbul. Only downside is the noise from the railway and also the proximity to the nearest mosque (prayer call might wake you up rather early!). Helpful staff, good facilities and great views in the summer from the roof terrace.

Nice Hotel in Istanbul in Sultanahmet
Hotel was fine. Upgraded without requesting it into the largest and most expensive room without additional charge - paid for a Junior Suite, so one price level up from the room we actually stayed in. Room had a wonderful view of the Sea of Marmara. Okay, next to a tramline, but all hotels on the Sea of Marmara are - and its not very obtrusive or noisey. One negative was the front desk recommendations for restaurants. Don't believe them - they are getting kick-backs for the standard Istanbul Fish Restaurant scam. Don't fall for it - we knew better.

Read up on restaurants before your stay. Get out of Sultanahmet and take the Metro - its cheap and easy. Don't eat fish in Istanbul - these restaurants are always rip-offs - big time rip-offs. Stick with the standard Turkish cuisine. Lots of wonderful places to eat, just do a little reading first.

Good experience
We had an Executive B&B room - Panoramic view 1st floor room off the lobby. Despite being next to the elevator and lobby, it was quiet for internal noise. This room is spacious and well decorated with large windows. While they look out on a narrow strip of water above the buildings, the near view is of the railroad tracks immediately behind and the backs of poorly kept buildings. Trains were frequent in the daytime, but not badly noisy. Heavy curtains and double glass cut the sound. We slept well. Free laptop to use wi-fi in the lobby. Breakfast room is in basement, no view or windows but good buffet. Location is about three blocks downhill from Blue Mosque inside the old city walls. Several other recommended budget hotels nearby.

Nice small hotel in excellent location
Excellent location near Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia. What a view from the roof bar! Close to many Turkish Baths (recommend the one that the hotel pushes; not as touristy and half the price). Room was very spacious (King on top floor); could use better bathroom amenities and bedding (sheets kept falling off!). Overall, very nice experience and good change of pace from large business hotels.

Try Mosaic restaurant just off of Hagia Sophia square. Excellent regional (Turkish) menu at fair prices. Not as pushy or touristic as those around it. Also, Seven Hills restaurant for good seafood and incomparable view.

We loved this hotel!
This hotel is in a great location for seeing the major sights of Istanbul. Walking and taking the city tram was very easy from this location. It's also located on a quaint street full of hotels/restaurants. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. We'd definately recommend the Ferman Hotel to others.

The "carpet salesmen" can be very aggressive. If you don't want to be bothered, do not make eye contact as you walk down the street.
