The Bank Hotel occupies the prime location in Edinburgh city centre, situated on the Royal mile and only two minutes walk from Princes Street, all the history and culture of Edinburgh is quite literally on your doorstep. Built in 1923 as a grand Bank, the building was extensively renovated with many original features restored in 1998 to create The Bank Hotel, and which has recently undergone refurbishment in February 2008. The Bank Hotel comprises 9 en-suite bedrooms of a 3 star standard, each one individually designed to reflect the work and lives of a famous Scot. Arranged over the three floors and accessed via the original staircase, all rooms benefit from LCD panel TV's, safes, hairdryers, direct-dial telephones, Tea & Coffee making facilities and added comforts such as CD players, bathrobes & limited room service. The Bank Bar, timeless in design with glorious wood panelling and a cool relaxed atmosphere, offers a wide range of drinks and an extensive daily food menu. Popular with locals and tourists and having an outdoor seating area on The Royal Mile, The Bank Bar ensures that you absorb the buzz of this historical city and you won't want to leave! With such an excellent location, transport is not necessary, however, Waverley Train Station is only two minutes walk away & Edinburgh Airport can be accessed via the Airlink bus service which runs every 10 minutes from the airport to the city centre

A great surprise

At our arrival, we were greeted by a very pleasant and helpful staff. Our biggest surprise was walking into our room. At first, we thought we had stumbled upon an office or closet of some sort. But it turns out each room has a theme - ours was a laboratory of a doctor in the 1800's. Imagine sleeping in the midst of dusty jars of critters and pictures of human anatomy! We loved it! The hotel also houses a bar on the ground floor, and can be a bit noisy at night. But I didn't really mind. The location couldn't be more central on the Royal Mile. Just a great location.

Go visit the Underground. A very interesting (and just a wee bit cheesy, but not too much) tour of Edinburgh's plague-riddled past.

Great place, staff and location

I LOVED this hotel. The staff were all young, friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. The location was literally in the dead center of the historic district with great views. The room was beautifully decorated, clean and comfortable with a great tv and dvd player. I can't recommend this fun place enough-you should stay here. The only reasons it might not be perfect for everyone is there is no mini fridge or hair dryer and all rooms are up at least two long flights of stairs with no elevator.

compassionate staff

I was to meet my husband in Edinburgh who was flying over from the USA and I was coming from my trip to Ireland. He missed a connecting flight and the airlines would tell me nothing. The plan was to wait at the airport for 2 hrs then head over to the Bank Hotel, where we had booked. I called the Bank Hotel from the airport to see if my husband had called to leave any messages. The young lady working was so friendly, and truly concerned over my situation. She told me the best way to get there from the airport and told me to head over and if my husband called they would relay any message. Upon arrival the young lady and bartender where truly caring. Offered me a cup of tea and held my bags for me since it was 10am and too early to check in. Long story short, while I was in my room still waiting for my husband the bartender called up and told me, at 4:30 pm, that "my man had arrived!" Whew! I was relieved. The hotel is in a fantastic location! If you travel to Edinburgh you might as well have the location as the #1 priority. Right on the Royal Mile. Busy, busy pub downstairs but the noise did not pass to the 2nd floor. The rooms are secured behind a locking door from the pub area so safety was no concern. Twin bedded room was large with good size bathroom. Overall cleanliness was good, beds comfy. The only thing I would change perhaps is having the windows open a bit for circulation. I would definately stay there again and recommend it to family and friends.

The staff were very helpful and

The staff were very helpful and although I arrived early they very kindly allowed my wife and myself to go to our room even carrying our cases to the top floor. This hotel is very central for sight seeing and well situated for eating and drinking. I will most certainly use it again.

Great Location!!

We stayed at The Bank Hotel over the New Years and participated in the street party there in Edinburgh. The Bank Hotel was in the middle of the activities and we could walk to the Castle!! It is a hotspot every night with live music and a great staff. Not a place for little kids. The bed was extremely comfortable even though the room was a bit small, it had a nice feel to it. We didn't even mind the 89 steps to get up to our floor! The only complaint we had was the shower stall did not drain properly so showers were standing in water and quick so it would not overflow!! Considering the age of the place and the cost, this was a minor problem. All in all we loved our stay. And again, the staff could not have been more friendly or helpful!!

Don't miss the Whiskey just up the street from The Bank, great food and service, try the Goat Cheese with Mango Chutney...excellent!! Also, opposite direction, a bit further walk, nearer the castle is The Witchery...bit expensive but well worth it!

Great lodging, great location, great pub

Depends on what you're looking for, but this was a great place for my trip. It's centrally located - within walking distance of the castle, the palace and everything else on the Royal Mile. Vibrant pub just down the stairs in case you want a pint while watching a football game. Staff was friendly and helpful. It's an older building, so you need to haul your baggage up the stairs and the rooms are small. Modern bathroom, TV with DVD, in-room coffee/tea. There wasn't an internet plug, but I found a free wireless network to use. Not sure if this is part of the hotel's service or if I was just lucky.

A Classic!

If you only want 5 star super-deluxe hotels, this is not the hotel for you. If you want something different, with unique rooms and a great location, this is the place to stay in Edinburgh.First the pluses - this is not another generic hotel with no character, every room is unique. Mine was dedicated to a Scottish physician who developed anesthesia, and the room was decorated like an antique doctors study or pharmacy, complete with old beakers and bottles and other accessories. Second, it's an historical, registered building, and just has character, the only other place I've stayed that I can liken it to is the Galle Face in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Third, step out the front door of the hotel, and you're literally on the Royal Mile - turn left for Edinburgh Castle, turn right for Holyrood Palace. Shops, bars and restaurants all around. Staff was very helpful and accomodating - they run the bar on the ground floor of the building, but were always available to answer questions or provide assistance. It's also only a 3-4 minute walk from the Waverly Bridge bus stop, where you can get the express bus to/from the airport. There's also a bar with a limited food menu on the ground floor, so it's easy to get a quick drink if you'd like one. The room were reasonably sized, and had a small refrigerator and a proper closet, as well as extra linens if needed. There were a few downsides, but for me nothing major. You do get noise sometimes from the street or noisy pipes (heating?), but I was right over the bar and never heard any noise from there. There is no elevator because it's a registered historic building, but if you've got the legs to be exploring Edinburgh on foot (the easiest way) with all of its hills, a few more steps shouldn't present too much challenge except when you're checking in. My safe deposit box in the room wasn't working, but the manager on duty would always be happy to secure my valuables in the main hotel safe for me. No 5 star deluxe amenities like little bars of herbal soap, but who really needs that stuff anyway? I usually see the hotel for a short time when I wake up in the morning and again when I go to bed at night, and the rest of the time I'm out having fun.All in all a great, unique place to stay, and I'd definitely stay there again on future trips to Edinburgh.
