Great for the Edinburgh Marathon Festival

This is a perfect location for the start of the Edinburgh Marathon plus the return bus stop is just yards away. It certainly ticked all the right boxes for what I wanted in an hotel, but then I did go up for the marathon and the ten minute walk to the shops and restaurants didn't bother me.

work in progress

The first impression counts and I thought I had walked into a dodgy backpackers, worn out carpet and stairs lit by a portable flood light guiding me down to my floor, there is no elevator, then had to go through no less than six doors to get to the door to my room. The room was reasonably well appointed and the group is trying to bring the standard up. In contrast, the shower had alot of black mildew between the tiles. I borrowed one iron which didn't work, the next one had a dodgy cord. There is alot of renovation going on and I can see potential and it certainly was inexpensive, but the hotel, and some of the staff, who spent more time smoking out front than anything, needs alot of work. Added to that all the hotel carpark was taken by tradesmen, lack of local knowledge seeing me getting a parking fine at 0830 in the morning.

Absolutely delighted!

My friend and I took two single rooms for an overnight stay and were absolutely delighted with the hotel. Some hotels would charge double the price for the same service. Rooms clean, ensuite. Staff really pleasant helpful. Breakfast - as much as you wanted to eat. And all this despite radical renovations going on which look like they will transform the interior tastefully. The location is perfect - for train station, taxi rank, restaurants/cafes, shopping, galleries .....And the weather was glorious...I could go on and on. Normally use Travelodge but am now a Cairns Hotel convert.

Pretty good

Comfortable, convenient location. Some renovation underway while we were there was not too disruptive.

Great Location on the Fringe

The Cairn is located a short walk from Waverly Station on the fringe of the New Town. Great location and close to many amenities. The hotel itself is divided into a main and annex across the street; my room was in the annex on the ground floor. The room, at the back away from the street overlooking an overgrown garden, was clean, pleasant and blissfully quiet, so quiet the birds chirping outside were a welcome change from the hard sounds of the city.

Don't miss the opportunity to share a local pint or a peaty whisky in one of Edinburgh's older pubs.

Hotel is Cheap and OK

Hotel is a bit dirty, but cheap price and as always you get what you pay for, OK on that side. My main issue as reported by others, is that the walls are VERY thin. Not nice to be hearing the couple next door talking even in low tones - unacceptable in 2013 hotel, and could be amended by use of more insulation..
