A february weekend in Edinburgh

I arrived later than expected but I was received by friendly attentive staff. Checking in was quick and my room was easy to find. I was pleasantly surprised by the size of my twin room as previous reviews have not been so positive. It had all that I would expect of a Hilton Hotel but no more. Breakfast was delicious and there was plenty of choice on offer each morning. Again the staff were helpful and the whole atmosphere was relaxing and unrushed. Checking out presented no difficulties. I would stay at this hotel again. Hassle free.

Great hotel in a great location

The desk staff was friendly and helpful at check in. I had called O2 to have a pre-paid sim card sent to the hotel and the person at the desk remembered getting the package and immediately handed it to me while we were checking in. We got there at about 11 am so they tagged our bags and stored them until check in time. We went to walk around Edinburgh until about 4:30 then came back. Our bags were already in our room and everything was clean and set up. The room was large by U.S. standards which makes it ginormous by European standards. The staff were helpful in suggesting great places to eat, visit and even a good tattoo shop. The train station is about a 2 minute walk due to waiting for traffic lights but 2 round trip tickets to Waverly station is 4.80 a cab would cost about 8.00. Over all a great hotel in a great location!!!

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

Two hints: 1) there are several bakeries near by so a coffee and breakfast "pie" are near by and cheap. 2) The Haymarket train station is a very short walk, 2 round trip tickets to Waverly (in the middle of the city) are cheaper than a cab ride in most cases.

Would stay here again

My fiance and I came during a trip to the British Isles including London, Edinburgh, and Dublin. The Hilton Grosvenor in Edinburgh was my introduction to a UK hotel and it was a decent one. We unknowingly booked during the Murrayfield Magic, the super 7 rugby tournament, as well as the Edinburgh marathon, and the Bank Holiday. Despite these seemingly insurmountable odds, the staff did their best to help us out and direct us where we needed to go, although they were not always clued in as to what the clientele were interested in. For example, we wanted to do a ghost tour (for which Edinburgh is famous), and the poor girl at the front desk was incredibly flustered when we asked if she happened to know if the cross streets we were seeking were correct. She asked the supervisor who seemed to not be bothered by it and really didn't care at all if we made it to our destination. Our room was fairly up to date; however, the bed was old and the carpet well worn. The door was 2 inches from the frame on the bottom and one could hear every person walking by as though they were knocking on the door. Every time we took a step the floor creaked, a little annoying to us but I'm sure the residents underneath could have done without. The shower had little pressure but heated quickly. It was much less than I expected from a Hilton. For example, the "Free wifi" cost around 5 GBP for half an hour, not bad. It cut out after 10 mins and the front desk clerk had no idea how to restart it (it was a proprietary OS and unless you had another CC number you couldn't restart it). She told us she was sorry and that was it, she went back to her work without concern. I do not believe she meant to be rude but I think she was untrained as to what to do in that situation. I cannot comment on the restaurant as it was taken up by the rugby fans and in general seemed much too expensive for the area. The bar, however, was very modern and the staff friendly. There is no free wifi despite what the front desk told us. There is free wifi on the corner at the cafe though. We would stay again if we were able to obtain the same deal (I believe we paid $100 USD per night).
