Description
In the heart of Glasgow stands the historic Grand Central Hotel. A much-loved icon in the city, the hotel has undergone a 20 million refurbishment transforming it into one of Glasgow's most superior, conference, banqueting and short break destinations and once again takes its place as Glasgow's leading four-star hotel. Whether you're looking for an inspirational conference, meeting or training venue, a spectacular banqueting suite for your next event, planning a fabulous wedding, looking to indulge in a glass of bubbles in Champagne Central, or simply enjoy a relaxing break, The Grand Central Hotel is the leading business venue and first choice luxury hotel in Glasgow. From the stunning Grand Room with capacity for 400 to the eclectic mix of 21 unique and flexible event rooms, from the beautiful Champagne Bar to the stylish and relaxing bedrooms - everything at The Grand Central Hotel has been beautifully renovated and loving restored to reveal a truly magnificent hotel. Caledonian Railways opened central Station, the main train hub of Glasgow in 1879 with the neighboring Central hotel opening just 4 years later. The hotel was designed by Scottish architect Robert Rowand Anderson and he adopted the Queen Anne style of architecture; an informal style that includes picturesque details, intricate gables and multi-paned windows. Over the years, the hotel was extended and adapted but the main architecture was maintained. The Central Hotel played host to many significant celebrity faces but is probably best known for being the venue to which the world's first long-distance television John Logie Baird transmitted pictures on 24 May 1927. The Central Hotel has entertained most of the world's leading politicians, from JFK to Winston Churchill and Hollywood superstars including Laurel and Hardy and Frank Sinatra, not to mention Roy Rogers and his trusty Trigger! It was reported that Trigger had a bigger suite than Roy Rogers! The Future, now the transformation has been completed, the Grand Central Hotel has once again taken its place as Glasgow's leading four-star hotel. It is now a must-stay destination for shoppers, theatergoers and the short break guest to the city. It has the latest luxuries for business travelers and gives conference and banqueting organizers the WOW factor they want for their next event. The best luxury hotel in Glasgow is back. The hotel also offers free breakfast and no smoking policy as additional amenity.

The Marks Hotel is an excellent boutique hotel situated 5-7 minutes walk away from Glasgow Central Station and about 10 minutes from Queen Street Station. George Square is only just 12 minutes away. The main shopping areas and lots of good restaurants are within walking distance too. The hotel itself is clean, room service is excellent and the staff very helpful and polite. The rooms are nicely decorated and spaceous enough. If I ever go back to Glasgow, I would like to stay in the same hotel. Excellent value for money, highly recommended!

Great price for that last-minute weekend getaway

  • SWE by way of USA
  • 19 Nov 2011
I thought that what I paid for this hotel was shockingly low for a major city. The hotel is perfectly located for exploring Kelvingrove and the University of Glasgow museums and art galleries, and nearby dining options abound. It's a short taxi ride away from the Central and Queen Street stations. My room was tiny and needed some repairs (it looked like the attempts to repair flaws in the wall had been abandoned mid-way), but other than that it was perfectly suitable for a long weekend of exploring Glasgow. The staff was friendly and helpful, and promptly made sure that I could get a good night of sleep when I called at 1 am to complain about a neighboring room blasting loud music, heavy on the bass. When a taxi returned my lost wallet to reception after I had left the country, the hotel staff offered to mail it to me in Sweden. On the other hand, be prepared to do without amenities like room service food after 10 pm (but you can have beers delivered from the downstairs bar!) or essentials like loaner power adapters or sewing kits. Since the heat in the room automatically turns off when you leave the, taking a shower immediately upon returning to the room is not the most pleasant experience: you only get two not particularly fluffy towels and no bathrobe, but I imagine that more towels would have been sent up if I had asked. Overall, I'd definitely go back to the Lorne if I were on a tight budget.

Excellent Indian restaurant on this property. Convenient access to Scottish Exhibition & Conference Center, Kelvingrove Gallery & Museum, Glasgow University and other locations in western Glasgow. Must try the Sisters restaurant across the street. Staff leaves a lot to be desired. Room quite ordinary, but reasonable comfortable for a short stay. The horrid Scottish weather probably negatively influenced my whole attitude about this stay.

Good stay..

I was mainly sight seeing for the two days in Glasgow but it was nice to have a hotel only a block away from the center of Glasgow! Pretty comfortable for the one night and friendly staff. I would suggest that the Ramada have ear plugs available for guests (in the room) because the walls are a bit thin. Other than that I would highly recommend this hotel for the value and its distance to the town center.

Overall, pretty good, really central which was probably its biggest selling point. It took a while to check out as there wasn't anyone on the front desk for a while. Also, it would benefit from making the location of the parking a bit more obvious. We ended up parking in an NCP car park further away.

I only stayed the one night as I needed to get to the passport office for a fast track passport. It is well placed for the office. Hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. Car parking at £5 for the night until I left at 1pm next day was very reasonable. Room was larger than I expected , large very comfortable bed.Good shower/bath room. I was late checking in so had food in the bar. Chips were not "chunky" but typical skinny fries - my only negative but not a big deal. Breakfast at £10 was excellent. Buffet style but an excellent choice and quality. Eggs cooked to order, buffet quantities kept under control so that they were being continuously replenished with fresh food. Staff very friendly and efficient.

Good hotel in great City!

  • grumpyoldman2
  • 29 Jan 2012
From arrival (One minute walk from Central Station) the staff seemed some of the most helpful I have encountered in my extensive travelling. The first room I was allocated had the most depressing view over the flat roof of the back of the hotel. I asked to be changed because they gave me a singe bed when I had booked a double. Nicely appointed room (still not great view), well equipped, poor television reception and expesive mini bar. Great shower, nice large towel (singular). The downside is the totaly depressing ambience of the Collage restaurant. I was dining alone, early on Burns night. Attractive, helpful, competent young staff. Set meal had an option of cleverly prepared Haggis, neeps and tatties as a starter. It was a small offering but more than enough for me! i was boring and had fish and chips! Briiliantly cooked and a portion far too large for me. Creme Brulee for dessert need a lot more caramilising! Nice large glass of excellent house white! But depressing beyond words. there is a central area from which breakfast is served and this is screened off with heavy screens - awful. The lighting is neither bright nor subtle - just gloomy! Really annoying taped musc, too loud That aside the sfaff were so helpful and met my simple needs admirably.

This hotel was very pleasant, and the staff was great. The workout facilities were excellent, the room was comfortable although a little small. I would have liked wash cloths, but other than that, I really had no complaints. After staying in other hotels on the same trip, I really appreciated that the rooms were sound proof; we had no hallway noise even though we were right across from the elevators. The design of the common areas was cool, and my 5-year-old loved the elevators!

We weren't meant to stay here but the hotel we had booked 4 months earlier double booked us, so they made our reservation here. The staff were great, very friendly and helpful, the food was great with the cooked breakfast being made to order unlike most hotels which offer it buffet style. The room was very comfortable and individual room temperature control was fab. We didn't use the fitness suite with only staying 1 night. Would definately stay again, such central location, just minutes from Central station and all the shops.

It was a fine example of the type. More expensive than I'd usually choose, but in the perfect location as we were arriving at the jetty on the Clyde which is right outside the hotel. Only downsides we remember were the bar staff who got completely confused about our dinner order and charging us for it - but they apologised nicely and rectified it quickly; and pillows all too big and bouncy - nicer to have some like that and some a bit more floppy. Oh and there were 7 sachets of decaff and no caffeinated coffee with the kettle. As usual not enough milk.

Glasgow airport overnighter

  • longjohn
  • 22 Sep 2011
The Holiday Inn Express at Glasgow airport is so handy if you know how to reach it. Take the crossing just next to the crummy Terminal2 and follow the covered walkway. This starts about as far away from the baggage hall as you can go and still be in the airport precincts. Super rapid check in and check out. Food is limited after breakfast but is acceptable and comes quickly. The included breakfast is very good and service starts well before the advertised 6:00am. Rooms are quiet and well appointed with great beds.

Absolutely Great Location

  • Tour Guide Wannabe
  • 7 Jun 2011
This is a very nice hotel with a helpful, courteous staff, and clean, comfortable and attractive rooms. Breakfast was good too. But what was truly outstanding about this hotel was its location. It was across the street from all the major car rental agencies, so we dropped off our car and proceeded into the hotel. Also across the street was the covered walkway into the airport terminal, no more than a two minute walk. At the terminal was a bus that ran every 10 minutes that went into the center of Glasgow. We had booked two nights at the Holiday Inn Express at the end of a twenty day trip, and used it as our base to explore Glasgow, and then of course it was a fantastic place to go to the airport on our last day.

The hotel may have cheap prices, but that doesn't mean that the hotel cannot keep facilities and rooms up to date. The hotel hasn't renovated the hostel twice in the last few years and is continually updating our offering; here's an idea of what you can enjoy here. For a quieter night in you could cook your own dinner in the room, guest kitchen and sit down to relax and enjoy it in the TV lounge. The enormous TV is accompanied by a pool table. Spent 3 nights in 2 different stays flying in and out of Glasgow in August 2011. Excellent location within short walk of both train stations and shopping areas. As for a quiet room if important to you -- as others have noted, rooms in front (eg 219) pick up street noise when bars close. Restaurant was pleasant suprise. Fine dining Michael Caine has closed but some staff have stayed on for the casual menu. Had a prix fixe 10 pound 2-course dinner including perfectly prepared salmon.

We stayed at Abode on vacation. The location is great for accessing the city. Our room was small but adequate. However, we were on the third floor facing the street and even at that height the street noise was very bad. Three car alarms in one night! A friend had a room on the first floor street side and got little sleep the three nights we were there. The staff is nice and helpful, but try to get a room on an upper floor at the back.
