Perfect location, exactly what you expect
This hotel is exactly what you expect from a boutique hotel. Yes the rooms are very small, yet very charming. The whole hotel is quaint. Staff was polite and helpful. Room was clean and warm for our December stay. The location is excellent! A couple blocks from train, walking distance from shopping, museums and many sights. Other sights and shopping a few short train stops away. Would definitely recommend and choose to stay again.

Better than expected
I stayed at this hotel for more than a week in September. Overall speaking, it was better than expected as I had read some bad reviews about the hotel before the booking. I decided to choose this hotel because of its location. The hotel is close to the tube station south kensington that connects to the piccadilly, circle and district lines. There are bus stops right around the corner and by the station as well. Very close to V&A which is a can't miss in London in my opinion. And there are many other attractions near by: national history museum, science museum, royal albert hall, hyde park, serpentine gallery, harrods all within walking distance. Complimentary tea bags, coffee and sugar refilled daily in the room which is ultra nice especially after a long walking, rainy and cold day and intensive sightseeing. The hotel offers wifi service at a rate of GBP 15 for 24 hours. ButIi was able to pick up another wifi service provider's signal at the hotel and paid GBP 15 for 5 day access. It was stable and fast. My room was facing the street, so I can hear cars passing and people talking. I can also hear door slamming, elevator coming and going and people in rooms next to me. Light sleepers would probably find this annoying. I didn't try the hotel's breakfast as there are many other restaurants by the tube station.

typical European
Not bad but not sure it was exceptional. Excellent staff helps a lot. Location is amazing for touring London. Very small hotel with an elevator that will only hold 1 or 2 people - some might be clausterphobic. Some may find the post war style to be quaint and attractive, but seemed to need remodeling to me. Attractive lobby makes leaves you expecting more from the room.

great value
Gainsborough Hotel London is a very good location to stay. The local shops and restaurants are great and a good value. The room cost is a real value. My room was clean and nice small with 2 single beds, typical london. The room could use a little updating but was good place to sleep in a safe cool neighborhood. Some rooms on the first floor were a little nicer that the ones upstairs.

Liked the Location
Spent three nights at the Gainsborough and had a nice stay. I wasn't expecting too much based on the other reviews, but wanted a room that was clean, comfortable and with air conditioning. That was the Gainsborough. It's a typical London Hotel, so was expecting a smaller room, but was pleased to have room enough to move around. We really liked the location in that it was easy to catch public transportation, the hop on - hop off tourist buses and around a number of restaurants and grocery stores. The South Kensington Station was just three blocks away.

Good Location, Other Reviewers were on
Did not expect too much after reading the reviews. Reserved two rooms, one for my parents and the other for my sister and myself. I specifically wanted a place that was in a central location, close to restaurants and with air conditioning. The Gainsborough fit the bill. The room was showing it's age, but the a/c worked well and since I wasn't expecting a tremendous amount, it worked for us. By US standards, the room is on the small side, but not as small as some of the other rooms that I had in London. The hotel is a block from the the V&A and Natural History Museums as well as the Hop On and Off sightseeing buses. There are a number of restaurants in the area.
