A nightmare of a weekend
My partner (Damien Adamson, who made the initial booking) and I booked a night in the 4 star Shaftsbury Metropolitan in Hyde Park to stay the night of the 27th of October 2012. We had a function to change for and attend on that night and had a day out in London planned for the following day. We do not live near London, so this was a special occasion. Unfortunately it turned out to be a complete disaster. We were informed on our arrival that we do not have a room for the night, due to flooding or some other problem in the rooms that happened the previous night and that we will be re booked for a room in Hounslow 40minute taxi away! We arrived at the hotel at 7:30pm 5hours after check in Why were we not informed of this earlier?! The function we were attending was in Piccadilly, so we had the option to go to Hounslow and then go back to Piccadilly or change in the reception toilets, i paid for a 4star london hotel! but ended up needing to change in the toilet! We ended up being late for this function in the end. When we returned the next morning to get our bags and be taken to Hounslow we were met by a manager at the hotel who tried to accommodate us and in the end managed to get us a room there. Being a room that a gentleman had just checked out from and all the room had was a quick chenge of aheets and some fresh towels. This was unfortunately only at 5 in the morning, which is not what we paid for. Gone was the lovely night we had planned. We were so stressed out and tired the next day that we abandoned our plans to go out to London and just went home. This was the worst night we have ever had and the overall service from this hotel was horrendous. On return home I have attempted to email the hotel customer service and have had no response or even acknowledgement of my complaint.

The inside of the Taxi was bigger. Never again!
I should have know that when I entered on the ground floor to check-in and the desk manger said that you need to take the lift down to get to the room, it was a problem… This was after they over-sold and wanted to place me in another hotel further then where I need to stay. Perhaps I was banished to the dungeon? The room was so small, I can almost touched each wall at the same time. I literally had to keep one of my bags in very small bathroom. Also, when I got into to the room, the power kept going out. There was one small window in the room with a “nice” view of a (interior) hall way and staircase. My last cruise ship stateroom was bigger (and better). In all fairness there was some ok things about the stay but that was quashed by unforgiving and lack of personal attention from the staff. Never again will the company get any of my money.

Great stay in London
It was the third time at this hotel and I found the location great, next to Paddington Station and close to Nothing Hill. The staff is always nice and ready to help at all time. Eventhought the room are a bit small they are well decorated, maintain and clean. I am looking forward to go again.

Paris was amazing
Good location. Staff is a bit out to lunch.
The hotel in general is pretty good. Convenient location. Good price. Rooms are small but nice, clean. You want to request a room where the window faces outside, where fresh air can come in. Our first room had a window that looked out at the interior of the hotel. It got a bit claustrophobic. The staff isn't very good at recommending places to eat. So if they only tell you McDonalds and KFC are close, don't listen to them. There are other good places (pubs/indian/fine dining) blocks away from the hotel. I recommend the hotel but w/ the above warnings. And book at your own risk as both times we were checking in, other customers arrived and their bookings were completely lost. Other reviews here have mentioned this. We lucked out. But the lost bookings thing is real. And seemed like a real bummer if it happens to you.

Perfect for quick business trips
I was in town for 36 hours and was not in my hotel room for long periods of time. The standard double bed room very small but I am also very small and only had one large luggage roller. If you are traveling with a companion I am not sure there is enough room to move with 2 people. I was barely able to walk around. Especially in the shower-it was coffin sized. I am 5'4 and 125 lbs so I am not sure how a grown man would do in this hotel. The location is impeccable. SUPER close to Paddington station. I was alone and this was my first time in London. I got around with no problems and found this hotel very easy to find. There are a bunch of similar boutique-ish hotels on the same street so all you have to do is walk down Essex place and you will find this hotel. If I had to come back, alone, I would totally stay here given the location. If I come back for pleasure with a companion, I'll stay in a much bigger hotel room and pay the price.

Stayed here a few times
Great value for London. Rooms are small but clean. I have stayed at this hotel (and Shaftesbury in general about 6 or 7 times), so guess the value keeps me coming back. Plus is the free internet. Bad is the expensive breakfast, but you can get a good breakfast closeby in many places. I will stay here again.

Small rooms and tiny bathroom but clean
The place is in a nice locattion close to Paddington and in a nice neighborhood. clean but very very small rooms. If you are looking for a bargain you need to deal with the small nature of hotels like this. and remember everything in europe is SMALL

Good location which is very close
Good location which is very close to Paddington Station. At check in I was advised that breakfast was not included - I specifically made sure when I booked the rooms that breakfast was included so pointed out that it was. I was then told I had been charged too much by RatesToGo and this could not be refunded. The room. I had read the reviews saying the rooms were small - I assumed this was an exaggeration. The rooms are tiny. There is approximately 12 inches between the bed and the wall at the side and bottom. If you weigh more than 80 kg you will not fit in the shower. I would not recommend this hotel unless you are extremely small. Wont be back.

Ok, so rooms are small, but so what? If you need a big room go somewhere else, if you like nice staff, free Internet connection, clean and very nice rooms (for London quality the standard is absolutely great) this is the place. I travel a lot in business and can really recommend this hotel.
