Just a whisper away from the British Library and the British Museum, only a stroll away from the shops and attractions of the West End, lies a sanctuary a million miles from it all. It's an elegant 4 star townhouse in Bloomsbury known as The Academy, a boutique hotel where your comfort is paramount. Hotel's couches are for sinking into not perching on, food is for savoring not picking at, beds are designed to give you the soundest night's sleep. Outside you'll find a private garden, just for hotel residents, where flowers fill the generous space with color and delicate fragrance and a fishpond ripples softly in the quiet. It's hard to believe you're in the heart of London's West End, but you are. The hotel is currently undergoing external renovations until 29th February 2012.

Everything that Matters to Me!

Overall - Charming, Convenient, Clean, Good Service The Good -- Very charming hotel with very friendly staff who went out of their way to help me with taxis, restaurant reservations, my luggage. If I made a call to the front desk, they would address my needs within less than two minutes (unlike larger much more expensive hotels that respond within the hour if you are lucky.) Conveniently located near the tube so you don't have to pay for expensive taxis for your entire trip. In a very charming location with lots of brownstone buildings, in an academic location. Very clean room with comfortable bed and bedding -- both of which was important to me. The Bad - There are lots of stairs so if you don't like to walk up stairs, this is not the place for you. The rooms are also small so if you need something large and spacious, you are better off spending more money at a chain hotel. I also came back one night to the door closed and locked which scared me a bit -- it was after 1am so I was surprised and a little concerned to find the door locked. It was easily resolved when I rang the doorbell and one of the staff members opened the door for me. Just startled me a bit - they should leave a sign at the door when you walk in so their guests are notified in advance and aren't surprised like I was. Overall, great experience and was really satisfied and pleased.

Use the Euston Square tube station for getting around. It will cost only 25% of what you would spend on a taxi.

Great location, very old, small

The hotel is located very close to totenham court and oxford street, the room is small and except for the bed, there is not enough room to do anything. the building is old and doesnt have an elevator included, but for a quick visit in london for solo travelers you get what you pay for.

Lovely Hotel!

My single room was facing the garden and was very quiet; it was a very good size. I loved the fresh mineral water bottle and fruit delivered to the room every day. The shower room was adequate. The location was sensational - the British Museum at a mere 2 Minutes on foot, Leicester Square and Covent Garden at 15 minutes. Staff was helpful and friendly. Free wireless only available in lobby.

Lovely staff, cozy and comfortable room, great location

I truly enjoyed my stay at The Academy and very much hope to return. The staff were helpful and friendly and the room was tidy and comfortable. The apples and sparkling water were a nice, friendly touch. The location is wonderful and close to just about anywhere you want to get to in central London, the City, Southbank, Marylebone, etc. As a traveler on an early morning flight from the U.S., it might have been nice to be able to get into the room a bit earlier, but I understand the constraints. Overall, a lovely place to stay!

Safe and Clean Single Room

Friendly and helpful staff. Room was clean. Bathroom was nice size. Hotel was in a safe and well lit area. I would stay at the Academy Hotel again. I was a bit disappointed that there was daytime construction going on at the hotel.

Great Location but Needs Improvement

The Academy in Bloomsbury boasts an excellent location for enjoying London, especially the British Museum, Soho, and the theatre district. Our first night there was inauspicious: we were given a small room on the top floor, four flights up with a window (opening onto a scaffolding) that wouldn't close. It was obvious that the window had been broken into. The staff quickly moved us to another room, a suite two flights down, that was a lovely compensation and much better value for their high prices: spacious, comfortable, elegant. They offer an additional-cost breakfast but we didn't take it. The Academy is a mixed bag of nice boutique rooms with good beds but with shabby stairs and halls and no lift. Another drawback: the high-speed internet doesn't function well, if at all, and is far from high speed.

Quaint and comfortably cozy

A very comfortable hotel with no elevator - I prefer stairs anyway. Two intimate lounges with adjacent gardens and one with a computer made for very convenient meeting spaces with other members of my group. Breakfasts were very good with a fine continental breakfast buffet and ala carte menu. One of the best aspects of this hotel is the congenial and helpful staff - they were super. If one wants to experience a more British cultural style of hotel and is able to put up with less luxury, this is a very good deal.

Money-saving tip: Not Applicable

Always buy your tickets for the trains at the ticket window NOT electronically - if a mistake is made at the window you can correct it. If you buy electronically you may pay more and if you want satisfaction for a mistake good luck trying to get it.

Nice location, but not much of a hotel

The hotel has a reasonably nice reception and outdoor patio. Otherwise things are fairly nondescript. The single room was reasonably sized, but the bathroom wasn't particularly nice (no place to put soap or shampoo while you are taking a shower for example). The room was relatively drab and uninteresting. The air conditioning also didn't cool, which made the room fairly uncomfortable. The hotel was willing to switch me too a different room, but that meant repacking everything so I didn't. For a hotel that charges a healthy rate, though, these kinds of things shouldn't be issues. There was definitely not an atmosphere of excellence.

The Academy Hotel

The Hotel staff at The Academy are first rate - very helpful and provided good advice on travel within London, sites to see, how to negotiate the city. The room was less desirable. We are extremely seasoned European travelers and the room was exceptionally small and we know small European hotel rooms. Basic things, such as outlets for recharging various electronic devices were notably absent. The room was clean but the washroom toilet did not flush well and there was absolutely no place to put toiletries when shaving, cleaning up, etc... again, very cramped space. My advice, if you value creature comforts is to look elsewhere.

Great restaurants on Charlotte St. in this part of Bloomsbury neighborhood. Numerous options: Indian, Thai, Italian, Greek, Japanese, Chinese, etc... and very good food, indeed.

Great London location

The hotel was extremely easy to find & 2 Underground stops close by made it very easy to sight-see all the things London visitors want to see. The hotel was comfortable and well equipped. We didn't spend a lot of time in the room, but the accommodations were good. The hotel is an older hotel, but nice. We selected it because of the good reviews and were not disappointed. Very friendly and helpful staff - GREAT food nearby (Thai Metro on Charolette Street was FABULOUS!)

Time-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

Everywhere you want to go is a quick tube ride away. Be sure to check before you leave to see if the best station is Goodge St. or Holborn...different Underground lines, but a short trip if you do your homework before leaving the hotel. The British Museum is right across the way & many good shops nearby.
