Great location, very spacious room

I stayed at room #2, on the ground floor overlooking a pretty garden. The room was very spacious, with a kitchenette and a big all-marble bathroom. The only disappointment was that the refrigerator provided lukewarm temperatures! The corridor between rooms #1 and #2 was tiny, so getting into the room with a suitcase required some effort. The staff were very polite. Breakfast was pricey and served in another hotel (owned by the same company) two doors down the same street. The hotel was very clean and pretty, and the location was outstanding. I would definitely go back again!

A comforatble week in London

We were in London during a warm spell and the building is not air-conditioned. A fan provided with each room kept us comfortable. Our room was on the street, below ground, yet we weren't bothered by street noise or employee comings and goings. The bathroom was very nice--I'm tall and the shower head was well above me. Staff brought ice to the room when asked---no room service charge for that. I had no surprise charges when checking out. Internet wasn't free, charges were typically pricey. One irritation: the room's small refrigerator was not powered and was presented as cooler (to be used like a Styrofoam chest).

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

There are quite a number of places to eat and several small grocery stores ('TESCO') within walking distance. We had no unsatisfactory dining experiences in the neighbourhood. The hotel has no dining facilities, but a companion hotel next door does (on the pricey side--we didn't eat there).

Great big comfortable rooms with a helpful microwave and refrigerator. Premium sports channels on the room TV as well. A bit pricey (like everything in London), but if you can afford it, it's more comfortable than most hotel rooms.

Nice Place, Few Amenities

The location was great within one-quarter mile (possibly less) of two Underground stations. Rooms were kept very clean and comfortable. The staff was very professional and courteous (but not an English person to be seen) I was led to believe there was a bar and dinning -- But NOOO! You could get a drink from a limited menu and sit in the lobby or your room. The dinning was at a "sister" hotel down the street where the prices were outragous for what you got. For example 17 - 21 Pounds ($27-34) for no more of a breakfast buffet than some hotels in the U.S. give you complementary (the higher price was if you wanted fresh fruit). I won't even talk about dinner. There were no other amenities (pool, outdoor seating, workout area etc.). Still it was a nice place but nothing to do but sit in the room when you came back. They did have a computer with internet access you could use.

Entertainment tip: Short walk from hotel

There was alot to do in the neighborhood. Small but nice parks at either end of the block, some shopping, a lot of decent dinning (some very good) within a walking distance or a short cab ride. A good old (real) English Pub near the one underground stations. If you want real nightlife this is not where to go. But for middle aged people this was a very nice area. Central to many attractions and easy Undergroun access to the main sites in London.

Just what I wanted

Since I was traveling by myself and spending four days and nights in London, I wanted a hotel where I could prepare my own meals in Bloomsbury, and The Portland was a great choice. I paid more for a King-sized suite with kitchenette, and for once the money was worth it: I had a very nice room (#2) on the ground floor, in the back of the building with a huge window facing out at the garden. It was quiet and peaceful, and the room was very large and pleasant, with a large modern bathroom attached. The kitchenette provided a mircrowave, a mini-fridge, and a coffee/tea maker, and some plates, bowls, and cutlerly. Just the basics, but that was fine. The staff I encountered were all professional and polite and very friendly. I don't know about other rooms, but I was very happy with mine and look forward to staying at The Portland again. One caveat: the hotel provided soap, body wash, and shampoo -- some moisturizing body lotion would have been nice, as would a robe.

Great location for British Museum

Great location for British Museum and West End. Friendly service specially on the front desk. My room was 301....huge by London standards and nice view over some gardens. Almost felt like at home with a summer breeze blowing in from the gardens.

We had some difficulties with

We had some difficulties with staff understanding our requests for a cot and a sheet on the bed but they were generally tring to be helpful! Great facilities for a London hotel and good sized room. It was a shame we were downstairs as the airflow was not so good and the weather was hot.

Room ok, good location

The room was large with a King bed. We did not realize for this price no AC, and it was hot and humid in London. We had to keep the windows open, and we were over the street so it was noisy. They did have a fan so we were able to get some of the cool outside air in, but the room had no cross breeze. Grange has 4 or 5 hotels on this street. Not a bad experience, but you can probably find better hotels for less money.

Beautiful character hotel in a

Beautiful character hotel in a fantastic location, only a 10 minute walk from the West End. Rooms are large and comfortable and well-maintained. Only drawback is that breakfast, not included in the price, is very expensive. However, we'll definitely stay here again.

The location of the Hotel is superb

The location of the Hotel is superb for accessing Covent Garden (10min walk), theatreland and Oxford Street. The Staff at the Hotel were very attentive, however we had no reason to complain. Complimentary Tea/Coffe and Morning Paper together with an extra hour chech out to enable us to return to a shop before departure. Overall a very good Hotel in a quiet area, next to the British Musuem.
