Good location, but lack of car parking spoilt this trip for us. We had to park in a near by car park at £10 for 24hrs. Machine only accepted coins. Credit card process was lengthy and cost us due to phone calls so added expense. If arriving by car again would use Premmier Inn,which is near by,cheaper hotel and free parking.

Facility gets the lowest score

  • Anonymous Verified Customer

Facility gets the lowest score because they do not even have a car bay as you arrive to unload! You are on a double yellow line (UK road maro tellign you you cannot even stop there) and it is also a Bus lane (it was NO fun trying to unload the car). They have NO car park. One must go to a local public one 'round the corner. Aside that it is on a good location close to town centre and the Barbican area/port. Eveyrhting else was good.

Centrally located, with good facilities and large public areas. The rather drab exterior is not a reflection of the standards in the hotel which are very good. Conoisseur bedroom was clean, well equipped and comfortable. Excellent breakfast and attentive staff who were not intrusive. Overall a very enjoyable and relaxing stay.

Well located hotel half price breakfast deal represeted fair price for decent breakfast (£8) double that would have been too expensive. Locked out of hotel room when reception had query on bill (this happened 2 times) resolved quickly but annoying. Room excellent - interior much better than the exterior would suggest.

Very convenient location with lovely views from restaurant overlooking the estuary. Rooms were compact. Initial worries about poor quality/fitting double glazing proved unfounded as the nearby funfair closed down and moved out overnight without us hearing anything. No road traffic noise either. Good on site (free) parking. Everything has its price but I'd go back there again if town centre was what was needed.

PLEASE THINK TWICE

  • Scot Lass
  • 19 Jul 2010
I worked at The Astor for several weeks and, it is not just his hotel that Joseph Louei is in denial about, he is in denial about himself. He does not pay staff on time or at all, he treats the business as his personal bank, swears at customers, waters down the alcohol, charges different prices depending on who is being served, recycles left over food from parties and weddings to use at the next "event" and micro manages past the point of gross inefficency and wonders why no-one wants to eat or stay there;- it is because people do not want to put up with the abuse, bad atmosphere or run the risk of catching botulism from the sub standard refreshments on offer. PLEASE DO NOT STAY OR EAT THERE.

It was absolutely horrible! Only different types of cooked eggs, sausages, beans and bacon, every single morning for breakfast. The room was absolutely filthy; I had to remove dust for about a couple of hours. The guests parking was occupied by the owners' motorcycles and cars. Absolutely outrageous!!! Although, it is a great location please avoid this place as there are several other hotels just a few yards from this one.

Description
The Portbyhan hotel is located quayside in the heart of the beautiful cornish fishing town of West Looe. West Looe is still a functioning fishing town and the hotel's location provides guests with great views of 'hustle and bustle' going on everyday in the picturesque harbour. The family run hotel has a reputation for being one of the most popular hotels in Looe purely through recommendations by guests who have stayed in the hotel. Although the hotel does not have car parking space, free car parking vouchers are available at the reception for use at the nearby public car park. Aside from the Bar, guests have a wide choice of activities. Looe is actually two towns on opposite sides of the River Looe. East Looe is the newer of the 2 towns. Guests can have a guided tour through the maze-like streets, visit the 'Living from the Sea' exhibit to learn of the town's maritime history or just spend the day on the beach, separated from the mouth of the river by the 'Banjo Pier'. Over the bridge in the older West Looe guests can visit the 16th century 'Jolly Sailor Inn' or St Nicholas Church. Guests can wander in and out of the rock pools located in nearby Hannafore while enjoying the view of Looe island with its 'monastic cells' dating back to the 12th century. Also in Looe is the Monkey Sanctuary, located in an unspoilt area of natural woodland just a little way down the road from East Looe, this Sanctuary has recieved worldwide praise as the only place capable of breeding 'Amazonian Woolly Monkeys' outside of their habitat. 25km away is the Eden Project gardens in St Austell open all year round visitors can explore the 'largest rainforest in captivity'. Also in St Austell is the Cornish Market World, Britain's biggest indoor market with over 300 stalls and a diverse range of goods on offer. A little further away is the 'Lost Gardens of Heligan', located in one of the 'most mysterious estates in england'. After years of being left to waste away, these gardens have been lovingly restored to their former glory and are a must see attraction. 7miles away in the town of Liskeard is an attraction called Paul Corin's Magnificent Music Machines, a Museum for Organs and Pianos. 60km away in Launceston is Trethorne Leisure park, an indoor and outdoor leisure park complete with golf course, voted the best 2 for 1 golf club in the country in 2001, the park is the perfect family day out with a multitude of things for all the family to do and see.
