Hotels in York
The city of York is conveniently located just two hours away from London. When you need meeting and venue space in York, look no further than York Conferences. Owned by The University of York, the company rents out more than 200 of the university's meeting rooms for commercial purposes, some of which can accommodate nearly 1,200 people. York Conferences even offers bed and breakfast accommodations. You'll also find the Royal York Hotel and Convention centre; a Victorian hotel with meeting space for up to 400 people.
While tea is very British, and fondue very Swiss, you can combine both at Retro Fondue in York. Indulge in cheese or chocolate specialties with friends or get to know strangers. On your way through St. Helen's Square, stop in Betty's Cafe Tea Room for afternoon tea in a more classic setting. Finish off the daylong feast with traditional fish and chips at Wetherby Whaler near many York Hotels.
Open-air markets, eclectic shops, high street names, and upscale boutiques line the cobblestone streets of York. Fossgate is the city's most famous shopping street, dating back to Roman times. There, you'll find independent shops, cafés, and more. Fashionistas may want to head to York Designer Outlet. The city also has several antiques markets, including the Red House Antiques centre and the Antiques Centre York.
Major Points of Interest
You'll find plenty to do in York all year round, including a vast array of festivals celebrating literature, food, sports, and myriad other aspects of life. York also has a rich theatrical tradition. As for architecture, this ancient city offers plenty to see. The heart of the city is enclosed by medieval city walls and York Minster, the oldest Gothic cathedral in Northern Europe, dominates the skyline.
If you're a fan of sports, you'll find York has plenty to offer. In addition to the York City football club, the city hosts the York City Knights rugby team. If you enjoy horseracing, be sure to check out York Racecourse, a venue that dates back to 1731.
