Good deal for a short break

  • MT Hip
  • 2 Mar 2012
We were pleasantly pleased with the hotel although it was a fair walk to the centre. The swimming pool was a let down as it was not heated enough to swim and the shower room was very dirty. However we only stayed for a night so it was reasonable with what we paid for. Car park was cheap compared to what was in town and the staff kindly gave us extended parking after checking out without paying extra. Breakfast was good although it was £10 per person. Recommended for a short break.

Description
Standing in the shadow of York Minster, the BEST WESTERN PLUS Dean Court enjoys, without a doubt, the finest location of any hotel in the city (if not the country!). History and heritage lie on our doorstep, with the county capital's major attractions, boutique shops and eateries all a short walk away. Speaking of walks, the city's famous ghost tours are well worth joining, while plenty of parkland can be enjoyed on a relaxing stroll through the nearby museum gardens. York Races is of course a draw if you fancy a flutter, but the safest bet of all is our award-winning cuisine and fine wines! Leeds, Harrogate and Knaresborough are all within easy reach, but we agree with the Vikings and Romans. York is the place to be!

Clean rooms, nice sheets, free internet. The only concern I have is that the listing seems to show free parking and there is no free parking at the site. Overall the location is excellent, and the staff is second to none.

Really enjoyed the hotel, very welcoming staff, helpful and hotel clean although i would have expected white robes in bedroom . The bedroom was clean but dated and not in keeping with a hotel of this star rating .The breakfast was good and on a whole hotel good and family orientated. The children really enjoyed the swimming facility and Josh on reception at the pool was great advising us on local attractions and the best places to visit ,All in all would recommend

Comfortable, great location

Easy check-in, nice room but hot! Comfortable bar / lounge areas. A short wait for breakfast but efficiently handled. All in all I'd stay again, (this was our second short break there), not least because of the great location.

Great Location, Comfortable Room!

  • WanderingProf
  • 2 Aug 2010
We chose Monkbar over other options (including the BW Dean's Court, which is slightly better located) because we got a great deal on a large room with a king-sized bed. What we found was a very comfortable room, with nice french-door style windows, and a comfortable bed - located just outside the old city walls. Given that you can walk to York minister within 5 minutes and anywhere else in the old city within 15 minutes, we didn't even have to sacrifice location for price! The only downsides were the extremely loud fan that went on with the bathroom light (think blowhorn), and the fact that the decor was just a bit too packaged (soft pastel colors, etc - not the prime choice for the die-hard urban explorer). These are really minor complaints - everything else was perfect, and we may well stay here again next time we are in York!

Just returned from a 2 night stay. The hotel, located right on the river, is in a great location, to be able to walk into the city centre, etc which takes about 5 minutes or so. It is perfectly situated for restaurants and bars along the river banks. and the shopping areas are accessed easily. The hotel is clean, the rooms are clean and we were very happy with our stay. Would definitely stay here again in the future

The Groves is a very nice small

  • Anonymous
  • 20 Jul 2010
The Groves is a very nice small hotel. We spent 2 nights in July '10 here and found it a very pleasant experience. There is a main building and 2 annexes with more rooms across the car park (no charge during your stay). One of our party had a 2nd floor room in the main building and the other 2 were in one of the annexes. We found that the main building room was smaller than that in the annexe but both were quite adequate for a short stay. Obviously, room sizes vary so our experience may not be typical. The breakfast choices were excellent, from a full English to a continental, as was the breakfast itself. There is a small bar, open till around 11.00pm, at normal pub prices and a lounge to relax in. Staff were all friendly, polite and very helpful. The hotel is located in a quiet side street and it's a 10-minute stroll to the city walls and Minster, 15 mins to the centre. We have no hesitation in recommending this hotel for a short, or even a longer, stay in York.

Normal price listed as GBP130/night.

  • 7 Nov 2010
Normal price listed as GBP130/night. We thought we were getting a bargain at GBP49 for a twin. The room was tiny, one of the blankets was child size and we had to make the beds ourselves. They do have large rooms also, but to suggest our room was normally 130 pounds is frankly dishonest. On the plus side, the lobby area is lovely as is the staff, with the exeption of the surly young woman at reception in the mornings. Our room was barely worth the budget price we paid. We won't be back.

Excellent 'boutique'style hotel

Excellent 'boutique'style hotel in easy reach of York centre (about 10 minutes walk). Very clean, well appointed rooms and an excellent buffet breakfast. Staff were friendly and helpful and the access to covered parking across the road (£10 charge) was an unexpected bonus. Would recommend. Steve Haynes

Description
A very good, first-class hotel, ideally located for visitors to the old town of York. ** Please also note that the hotel does not accept all male or all female group parties. Bookings may be cancelled if a single sex group is booked or refused entry to hotel upon arrival.** (GW 05/2009) A modern looking, pale brick building, set across 4 floors. Very attractive because the river flows directly at the side of the hotel. Limited parking available at the hotel, but must be pre-booked with hotel in advance. The Queens is located within the old city walls of York overlooking the river Ouse, and within the city centre. Minutes from York Minster the hotel is perfectly located for leisure guests exploring the city, and also provides easy access to surrounding routes to cities such as Harrogate and Leeds.

Hotel in good location with easy access to York centre. Hotels' underground car park has only 18 spaces which you need to reserve before your stay, we missed out but used the nearby (3min walk) NCP car park which cost around £15 overnight. Hotel itself is clean but the decor is looking a little tired especially in the public areas. Buffet breakfast was good, room larger than expected and the staff friendly and helpful. Overall a pretty good experience for a short stay.

  • 17 Jun 2010
This was a great hotel and since it was a Best Western, we expected to find a standard hotel but this was not the case. It was more like a first class Bed and Breakfast, great restaurant with gourmet chef for both dinner and breakfast - great room with a charming, four poster canopied bed! Made the stay in York even better than we expected.

Description
Just a mile from York city centre (and the many attractions you'll find there), lies BEST WESTERN York Pavilion Hotel. This beautifully appointed Grade II listed Georgian country house is located away from the hustle and bustle to ensure a peaceful night's sleep, but close enough to the museums, walls, parks and shops that make this ancient city so appealing. York Minster and the free Railway Museum are both a mile away, the racecourse is two miles away and Leeds, Harrogate and Knaresborough lie a little further afield for yet more shops! And getting to these points of interest could not be easier, with free parking making travel by road a relaxing reality, and a ten minute bus service or a calming riverside walk providing equally easy alternatives. And when you return, our friendly and welcoming staff will provide memorable service that'll make you feel utterly at home!

Sadly, what started as a very pleasant evening away turned into an unpleasantly noisy night. The sound-proofing in our room was completely inadequate and we scarecely slept, finding the noise from TV and guests above us starting 1t 00:30 very intrusive, snoring continuing until 5 when we gave up trying to sleep.

We spent New Year in York and based our stay here. It was a well-placed hotel for city access with a regular bus service to York city centre. The hotel is a delightful Georgian building with sympathetic colour schemes and furnishings and good facilities including parking. Anne took us to our room which, although small, was well decorated with abeamed ceilings in the bedroom and en-suite. Although the room was at the front of the hotel traffic noise was not noticeably intrusive. Anne was very welcoming and booked a taxi to take us to our evening restaurant and made us feel part of a 'family'- in fact the hotel has the feel of a country house hotel. Restaurant and reception staff were excellent as were the arrangements for a 'late breakfast' on New Year's Day! We would recommend this hotel strongly.
