Worn, but clean and comfortable

  • AKBrian Verified Customer
  • 8 Dec 2011
Stayed at the Baranof in Downtown Juneau from December 5th to the 7th, 2011. It's an older hotel and the rooms (especially bathroom) are quite small, but everything was clean and comfortable, so that's the important part! Good water pressure in the shower, which is unusual. I couldn't find any temperature control in the room, but the temperature was fine for me, so not really an issue. I didn't try either the restaurant or lounge.

Not the easiest place to find in the dark, but very close to the airport. Staff very friendly and helpful, has a nice country feel to it. Room very comfortable without being extravagant, service very good and easy to settle in to. Biggest negative is parking is somewhat at a premium (had a late check-in) but it worked out fine. Internet access very flexible, and this was a comfortable base to operate from. Would be a great choice for a weekend getaway in this area.

We were en route from Sitka to Seattle and spent one night at the hotel. It was very convenient for the ferry terminal (we were picked up there) and the airport for our flight out the following morning. The rooms were very comfortable. Breakfast was OK. The recommendation for supper was good. A pleasant stay.

Several fishing buddies and I stayed at the Travelodge during our time in Juneau and found it to be clean and comfortable. The staff was also very helpful. We only ate breakfast at the hotel restaurant but it was good food and the portions large. The hotel certainly met our needs as a base for sightseeing and local fishing.

The check-in was a pain, it was not ready when I got there and had to wait an hour. But, not too big of a problem. They gave me the room I wanted/asked for. The people at counter seemed a little unfriendly. It looked pretty clean, but upon looking around I noticed by the heater unit under the window that it either got moisture or something leaked because it almost looked like mold along the sides of it. Since it's booked up, I will have to see if I react to that. Coffee tasted different, but what can you ask for when it's free? Anyway, it is right by airport and I had no issues with noise from that, I did however get some from 30 soccer players that were running around and banging on walls.

Loved the view of Gastineau Channel, with pair of bald eagles using an abandoned pier in front of the hotel. I was in Juneau on business for 3 days. I chose this hotel because of the previous reviews that stated it was not the typical politicians hangout. It was a bit eclectic and somewhat granola, but, I loved it. Great location, very homey feel. It is attached to a bakery (one of the best in town) that you were given complimentary coupons to for breakfast every morning. The lobby had lots of green and herbal teas available 24/7 as well as free coffee offered in the bakery. This hotel really seemed more like a B&B to me. I stayed in room #202 which I would recommend, especially after seeing some of the other rooms while they were being cleaned...very plain and small. I didn't see them all, of course, but I was very happy with my room. This hotel is not for everybody. It does not have a workout room but it does have a hot tub (located on a rooftop deck) and a small sauna. If you're looking for something a little different, this could be the place.

We live in Southeast Alaska and did a spur of the moment type trip to Juneau. We've stayed in several hotels over the years, but had never stayed at the Silverbow. Making reservations was easy. Our daughters had spent time in Juneau last year and stayed at the Silverbow - they highly recommended it to us. If staying downtown is important to your travel - the Silverbow is perfect. Very nice, we will plan to stay there again.

the woman who checked me in was outstanding - friendly and very helpful - the building is badly dated - as are the furnishings and fabric of the place. Owners have notices about smoking pasted everywhere (the only place they'd allow smoking was out the basement in a wreck of a carport overhang - if you smoked in front of the building - the signs there said you'd be tossed from the property. I don't know what happened that led to such vehemance -it does leave one feeling like "I don't really feel all that safe here" - if the mananagement feels they need to post such extreme threats for such minor issues.
