Very nice hotel, not the best location

  • CJ2011
  • 17 May 2012
We stayed in the tower to have the newer bathrooms with the separate shower. The bathroom toiletries were good quality, so they are worth trying! It was one of the most comfortable beds I have been in. We got a smoking room since it was much cheaper, and there was a strong smell when we got on the floor, but the room wasn't too bad. It would have been better if the windows opened and we could air it out, though. We did a LOT of walking up & down the hills, so if you are out of shape you will have to rely heavily on the cable cars to get around. The location was nice because it was centrally located, but it seemed a little far from everything. Overall a nice hotel and a very comfortable stay!

Great Hotel

Beautiful location, and great staff. Everyone was very attentive and polite. The room was very good sized (two queens) and the bathroom and closet could have been rooms by themselves! The only drawback is that the hotel is on top of a steep hill so the walk to it is quite a workout. Taking the cable car is a great option b/c it stops right in front of the hotel.

Had a very comfortable stay here. The staff were very friendly and the room was cosy and clean. I had no trouble with noise from other rooms or the street. I didn't go to the dinning room at all, but it always looked busy. Great location - right on the #38 bus line and close to the BART and cable cars.

Good Value, Bad Neighborhood, No Pool

  • SMASH1337
  • 11 Mar 2012
Neighborhood is a bit rough (at night), not fit for small children, but if your a group of guys they won't bother you. Also the hotel shuttle is pretty reliable so you can use that. Value was good, saved money and was pretty close to the Moscone Center for our convention. Rooms were a little smaller than expected. I was disappointed that there was no pool.

Great place to stay!

  • jabe
  • 7 May 2012
Our first trip to San Francisco was great and our accomadations were perfect. We were looking for something that was a little more quaint and certainly found it. The rooms are not large but very comfortable and clean. The staff is friendly and helpful. The rates were reasonable. Breakfast and evening wine and snacks included. Met many very nice people from around the world at the evening wine tasting. Location is good and very near many fine restaurants, but a pretty good walk to water. We are walkers so this didn't bother us. I highly recommend this Inn.

Great place for the price!

  • AbbyAnn
  • 2 Jan 2012
My boyfriend and I stayed at this hotel for a night when we were seeing music at the Bill Graham Civic Center. A few blocks from the hotel is the Tenderloin, which is a sketchy area, but nothing to be too worried about it. A few blocks in the other direction is the heart of Union Square, so it's actually a great location! The hotel is clean and has a unique style. It's a boutique hotel so basically it is just a really old hotel that is remodeled with new decor and paint. I like this style, though, so I enjoyed it!. We ate at Colibri Mexican Restaurant next to the hotel, but I wouldn't recommend it. It's overpriced and the food does not live up to the cost. I would definitely stay at the the Hotel Diva again. It was perfect for a one-night stay. The only downfall was that the hotel did not have toothbrushes or toothpaste, but there's a Walgreens one block away if you forget anything!

I guess they used to have a policy of a minimum stay of 30 days which later got changed to 7, but now this option comes up for shorter stays (we were there for 4 days) even though the management has not adjusted their procedures to account for people who are using it as a short term hotel. We arrived at 2:00 pm to find the door locked. We called the number for the sister hotel and were told they would try to locate the manager who was there somewhere. That never happened but fortunately another guest let us in so we could at least get our baggage off the street. When the manager showed up a few minutes later, she told us about the codes for the door and that if we ran out of toilet paper we could buy some at the shop up the street because the building only supplies your first one. I guess that makes sense if your are renting an apartment for a month, but is a little weird for a hotel. Similarly, there is no hair dryer and only 2 little bottles of shampoo per stay!!Overall, the place is a bit grubby (the fan in our bathroom had clearly not been cleaned in months) ...but on the plus side, you get a lot of space for your money, the neighborhood is convenient and you get to pretend you actually live there as you shop for tp with the natives.I was also really unhappy with the first one bedroom they gave us because there was lots of space but nowhere to actually sit except for one very soiled loveseat in the living room and the bathroom fan sounded like a train arriving. But the manager did offer to show me another unit which was one floor up and better set up. My conclusion is that my initial poor assessment of the Steinhart had more to do with inadequate description [...] site which categorizes it along with real hotel hotels. For the price, I was happy to make my own bed and reuse towels and I really liked being able to have a few meals at home..I just wish I had arrived with a better understanding of what I had actually booked.

Unit style hotel

We really enjoyed our stay at this hotel. It is more of a unit than a hotel as it has a kitchen, fridge, microwave etc so we enjoyed the opportunity to prepare our own meals after a month of travelling and eating out. The hotel is like a restored older style place that we though was quite funky and retro. The bed is hidden and folds down from the wall which was cool. The room wasn't airconditioned but we were very content as it was cold even in summer in san francisco. The hotel is within walking distance of most places providing that you consider yourself active. Most places were within a half hour walk which we enjoyed. The hotel staff were more than friendly and happy to help with any request.

Great experience at this hotel. Lovely lobby; professional, friendly, and accomodating staff; free apples at the front desk. Enjoyed the lounge on the top floor; romantic and great view of SF. Room very large, clean and comfortable for two with great view of downtown SF. Not too bad of a walk to Chinatown, Financial District, and Fisherman's Wharf (I walked to all three and back). Price for overnight parking quite steep (eek!). Would come back.

Funky respite

  • kplt
  • 13 Jun 2010
Loved how central the hotel was & despite warnings about the Tenderloin area, felt totally safe even at night. The pool area was great and so relaxing to have a nice little grassy & peaceful area to get away from the city hubbub. The only thing that was a bit off was the check in time. When we arrived our room wasn't ready so we came back 2 hours later and it still wasn't ready. But we just relaxed around the pool area with a couple of beers until everything was set. Will totally stay here again.

Nice hotel, scary location

After driving through the area & checking into the hotel I must admit I cried! The nice guy on reception had said not to be intimidated by the area so my husband suggested we go for a walk, after 2 blocks I pleaded with him to go back to the hotel & get the car. . . .we did. At this point I didn't want to stay in San Francisco at all (we are a british couple on a 4 week trip around California) From then on though everything just seemed to get better, once we had figured that I was really not comfortable walking around there it was all ok. You just have to set your own limits and work within that. The hotel itself is a real haven. Our room was spotless, the staff were all really nice & the reception staff in particular seem to be chosen for their cheerful attitudes. Although we did not get a chance to go in the pool it looked lovely & was nice to walk round it after a day in the city on the way to our room.

Galleria was a great place to stay. Close to downtown stores and cable cars, excellent places to eat. Also close to the Muni and Bart Transits. If you like to shop this is the hotel to stay at. Hotel staff is very friendly and helpful. Our room was small but most important very clean and the bed was comfortable. I love that this Hotel old but renovated nicely. There is a community room for the guests to use, if you didn't bring your computer there are two Apple computers there with a printer. Our room was very quiet so we got a good nights sleep. Next time we go to SF we will stay @ the Galleria.

First trip to San Francisco and as lone traveller

  • Gary51
  • 5 Mar 2012
Loved this place! Country French feel with older furniture and no one bothers you, come and go as you please as concierge two doors down in sister hotel but they always helpful. Soft drinks and tea/coffee available all day and always fresh cookies and newspapers. Wine and nibbles in afternoon. Great breakfast with wide range to suit all and freshly prepped. I had a queen room with nice fireplace and well heated. No view from room and no widescreen tv but hey I came to SF to be by this lovely city by the bay and was not disappointed. The hotel is just up from union square and a couple of steep hills to climb or get cable which runs just two blocks down but sf is hilly so you expect this. Lots of diners and restaurants in a three block radius.

Very comfortable and warm

  • 20 Jul 2011
The hotel was very nice and at a teriffic location to local attractions. 3 blocks to cable cars, union square, china town. amenities included breakfast, supply of bottled water and soda, apples, cookies, and an evening wine and snack hour & half. Room was roomy with sitting chairs, fire place and many shelves for storage. Coffee provided in room. we would definitely stay here again and would recommend it for older couples with no kids. Floors are wooden, so early risers or night owls are audible. one loud nightclub at back of hotel had some howlers at 2AM on two nights. Otherwise with location of room, noise was at a minimum.

I enjoyed my stay at this hotel. The location does not get any better. The staff was friendly and helpful. The rooms are small but to be expected at an older property such as this. The elevator was also small, slow and could only hold 4 people but so what?!?!? It was a 10 min walk from the Bart which made it even more attractive vs paying sky high prices at other nearby hotels. I would stay here again.

The King George Hotel - Union Square offers the perfect San Francisco location. Our hotel shares sidewalks with fine dining, world class shopping, theatre, Moscone Convention Center, Convention Hotels and San Francisco's world famous cable car line to Fisherman's Wharf. You will immediately notice our comfort and warmth. A tradition of charm and personal service have been our hallmark since we first opened our doors in 1914. Our amenities are distinctly up-to-date, including complimentary wireless internet access and flat screen televisions, but our hospitality and our rates are wonderfully old-fashioned. In the heart of downtown the King George Hotel is just three blocks from the Powell Street BART station, which now services both Oakland (OAK) and San Francisco (SFO) International Airports. Stay Classy San Francisco!

  • 23 Apr 2012
Our stay at Hotel Vertigo was fantastic! The staff was extremely helpful and nice...I mean everyone! Even the maintanence guy gave us a wonderful suggestion of a place to go at the "Starlight" down on Powell! Gregory at the front desk was exceptional as well. The hotel was a nice mixture of old and hip/contemporary. Nothing too over-the-top, just about right. The location was about a 50-minute walk to the Wharf (if you're the athletic type, saves money) and close to Union Square. You can take a quick Muni ride to the ballpark too. Never got hassled by anyone else anywhere on the street or inside somewhere. Everyone was suprising friendly. The shuttle Gregory hooked us up with only had a few stops before the airport and was cheaper than a cab....by alot! Thanks Hotel Vertigo!
