Art-Deco whimsy, 1920s-era grandeur and wine hour near Union Square
The Art-Deco era is alive and well at this boutique Hotel Union Square, which was returned to its 1920s grandeur during an exhaustive renovation in 2008. Today, the hotel features signature staircases and opulent moldings, while loft-like guest rooms boast brick walls and mosaic murals. Another benefit: the world's only Dashiell Hammett Suite, named after the author of "The Maltese Falcon." The property is part of the Personality Hotels Collection. It sits mere blocks from the shopping of Union Square.
Highlights
- Located blocks from Union Square
- Fun and literary inspired Dashiell Hammett Suite
- Funky style and 1920s grandeur
Rooms
Accommodations -- 39 rooms and seven suites -- are infused with the colors of San Francisco: crimson, gray and taupe. Designed to give the feel of a sophisticated urban apartment, rooms at the Hotel Union Square are custom-furnished with platform beds and tufted leather headboards, sleek dark-wood desks, velvety chaise lounges and expansive capsule-shaped mirrors. Many offer stunning views of the city skyline as well as complimentary Wi-Fi Internet access. Pets welcome (fees apply).Features
Hotel Union Square is best known for its specialty suites. The Dashiell Hammett Suite is the world's only suite dedicated to the author of "The Maltese Falcon." Apparently, the famous scribe loved the hotel so much that he booked his bride-to-be Josephine Dolan in that very suite on the night before their 1921 wedding. The hotel also features one Kids' Suite. This boasts a cherrywood trundle bed, a computer filled with history-related games, a Nintendo Wii, a writing desk and colorful rugs. The suite also displays a retro-style mixed-media collage of famous kid-friendly San Francisco landmarks.
All guests have access to a modest fitness center off-site; for a more intense workout experience, guests can purchase a pass to the Club One gym located around the corner (fees apply). Visitors also are welcome to join in a complimentary evening wine hour. Dry-cleaning and laundry services are available as well (fees apply).
Valet and self parking are available (fees apply).

weekend getaway!
The location of the hotel was our favorite part! it was our first time to San Francisco and we couldn't have picked a better location, especially since we were brave enought to not rent a car (which we are so glad we did not, who needs a car when you have such great public transportation?!) The staff was friendly and attentive, the hotel was adorable. The only thing that was "wrong" with the room was that the bedframe was a little too big for the bed and it just looked bad when you pulled the sheet back. but it was not an inconvenience and it was nothing that would keep us from going back.

convenient and affordable
This was a cozy place to stay overnight for a meeting. Near the hustle and bustle and the Powell street BART station, but surprisingly quiet (but that could be due to the fact that my windows only opened onto an interior chute--that would have been disappointing if I were vacationing). Nicely renovated, simple, but with some nice touches.

Little hidden treasure
The Hotel itself and staff were excellent. I only wish I had known how small the rooms were going to be. The bathroom especially was teeny! If you're going to be visiting the City and not be in your room too much time I would recommend Hotel Union Square.

Good Compared To Others
Relatively close to Moscone Center, but still 4 huge city block away. Goose down pillows. Low water pressure by nice shower head. Good enough, but wish all the hotel were $150 less expensive. I guess it depends on your budget. :-) Professional and friendly staff. Rooms were cleaned well!

Central location and staff helpful.
Central location and staff helpful. We had booked a small room based on previous experience of rooms in the States. However here when you book small you get small - we could not have stayed here without paying for an upgrade.

Queen Deluxe Room
The hotel was great. I was worried about tiny rooms, weird smells and unfriendly staff when I read some of the other reviews. But, I didn't have that experience at all. The Queen Deluxe room was a great size for a couple. The bed was very comfortable, the bathroom was a great size - lots of room, and there was a large closet to put suitcases and such in. It's not a huge room, but it was plenty comfortable. We got room 415 that overlooked the courtyard. Not a great view at all, but at least there wasn't street noise. The staff was very friendly. The decor was fantastic - a very modern look to an old building feel. Additionally, the location was wonderful. Right near a lot of shopping/food and in walking distance to some great attractions of the city (Embarcadero, Ferry Building, etc).

Great Trip
Great Hotel. Location could not be better right in the middle of shopping and dining. Easy access to the Cable Cars, BART and Taxi's galore. Spent three days in the city and was very happy with the hotel. The concierge has great knowledge and can get you great deals. Suggest the double decker bus tour great way to see a lot of the city in two hours and you can get on and off. FYI parking lot for the hotel is around the block. Go to the T-junction and make a left it is there on the left.

Great... but
As described in the Orbitz hotel review, its right smack in the middle of Union Square. It's very busy with a lot of things to do, no matter what you're looking for i.e. shopping, movies or dinning out. So…, with all the activities it makes the hotel rooms a little unpleasant for sleeping but, overall I was pleased with the hotel, staff and location. I would defiantly recommend to family and friends.

Nice hotel, lots of character
I was in town for a convention. This hotel was four blocks from the Moscone Center, by walking through the museum district and the gardens, and less than two blocks from the Westfield Shopping Center. Union Square is right up the road. Cablecar out front. Convenience store right across the street, and restaurants everywhere. The room was smaller than the illustrated example, and had no desk, but was otherwise very comfortable. This is an old building, but well-renovated. Good bed and nice bathroom facilities, with a big shower. The front desk personnel and concierge were excellent, always polite and helpful. I would definitely stay here again, but if you're traveling with someone, you need to ask ahead about the size of the room.

There's a simple steakhouse next door, and a good Chinese restaurant around the corner. Walk down to Market Street and get a hot dog. Plenty of places to eat within a three-block walk. Lots of variety!
