An oasis in chaotic Miami

Exceptional service, very friendly and helpful staff. Quiet and relaxing stay with walk access to shopping. A bit south of the Greater Miami scene, however, within minutes of downtown, airport and beach.

First Impressions

Over the years I've been taught never to score anything perfect, probably because nothing is perfect but the Ritz Carlton Coconut Grove came mighty close. In some respects it was a good value, at least I believe I got what I paid for. Some things were a bit pricey, ie meals/room service but when your satisfied you don't mind paying. For a first trip to Miami I can't imagine how I would stay elsewhere. Nearby Cocowalk provided a bit of entertainment, shopping and dining. In the evenings, the hotel bar and dining seemed to gather a quaint pleased crowd. The staff additionally made my stay pleasurable. Most were friendly, professional and helpful. I regret being too busy to enjoy the spa services. My only complaint is that my room keys failed on several occasions - otherwise a most enjoyable stay.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

Nearby gourmet grocery store, Fresh Market. Great cooked foods. The grilled salmon was excellent. They will be installing outdoor tables soon so people will have the ability to sit and eat.

Great Location and Service

we were looking for a quick get away and to pamper ourselves a bit. The hotel and staff were great at seeing to that. Yosef, manning the lobby bar, saw to our every need. The staff was very flexible and accommodating to our wants and desires. On the down side, when we pulled up to the front door, we were swarmmed by valets and doormen. Since I only needed a few bags, I had to slow things down a bit to get them organized. Great response-just a little over kill on service. Parking -$30.00 a bit high for this area of Miami even if it is the Ritz. I have paid $20 in South Beach. Things must have been pretty good. We didn't leave the property from check-in to check-out.

Nice, quiet getaway

Overall, I was pleased with the Ritz Carlton CG. However, the first day the entire hotel was having hot water issues and we had to take cold showers. Not a great way to start a long weekend. At the end of our trip the daily charges for internet connectivity were waived to compensate us for the hot water problem. I must say that the service we received from everyone who worked at the hotel was wonderful. Everyone was very helpful and sweet. Definitely made us feel at home. The hotel is not close to the beach so if you want this, don't stay at this hotel. We were within walking distance to lots of nice shops and restaurants in Coconut Grove, which was nice. Next time we come we'll rent a car so we can go to other areas without paying for a cab.

Nightlife tip: Not Applicable

Limited nightlife in Coconut Grove. Miami nightlife is a 15-20 minute cab drive/drive.

Great service, but not the best Ritz

Beautiful lobby and excellent service, but the pool and the exercise facility were not nearly up to Ritz standards. Except for the lobby this location lacked the wonderful luxurious feeling that a Ritz hotel usually provides.

My First Choice

The Ritz Carlton properties are my hotels of choice when I travel. The staff is always professional and friendly. The location in Coconut Grove was very nice and quiet. The room was excellent: large, clean, comfortable. The only reason I haven't rated the hotel 5 stars is because on three occasions during my five day stay, housekeeping failed to clean the room and turn down the bed. I was very busy during my stay and only got a chance to mention it to the front desk after the second incident. They made sure the room was cleaned that evening. However, fresh towels weren't placed in the room and the shower stall was insufficiently cleaned. My other complaint is with Orbitz. Orbitz indicated that the hotel was a couple of miles from South Beach, where I spent most of my time because of a family wedding. In fact, the ride to South Beach was approximately 20 minutes and cost $35.00 each way in a taxi. I had specifically chosen the Coconut Grove property because it had a better rating than the South Beach location and was just a little cheaper. I ended up using all that I saved and more on the taxi fares.

Don't do it

Location is terrible. Not many nearby dinning options or sites. A rental car is needed to get anywhere from this location. Valet parking is $30 a night. Staff expect tips for EVERYTHING, from checking you in to opening a door and treat you poorly and smirk if you do not. By tip, I mean at least five dollars. I tipped a doorman $2 per bag and he chuckled at me. This is the going rate at most hotels. And who expects a tip for holding open a door?!! I travel every week and have not seen such mediocre service. Price for in room dining and drinks at the pool bar was ridiculously expensive. The views were of empty lots, buildings, and streets and the pool was small. The phone in the room did not work and there was nobody at the front dest half the time. Save your money and stay in South Beach at a boutique hotel. In sum, this place was WAY overpriced for what you get. I've stayed at Ritz Carlton before and top end hotels; this was a sub-par experiance. There is no "personal touch" which I expect at a premium location and the service was plain rude.
