Ok, but not exceptional Hotel in south beach

The Hotel is very well located, its a good hotel but was expecting much better. The first room they gave us was 2-3 stars equivalent at most. After that first big disapointment we complained and the night manager in a very cold way proposed an upgrade to another room (paid of course :) ) We accepted the surcharge and got a better room, still nothing special but acceptable. The service of the hotel is nothing special, they dont try hard to please... With some exceptions ( pool lady and one the concierges were very nice) staff looks amateurish and doesnt seem to have any focus on client satisfaction... And charge $18 for an humbrela in the hotel beach sounds quite ridiculous for a quality hotel... We had much better experiences in other hotels in south beach...

Great hotel

The staff here is amazing. They go above and beyond and are super polite and friendly. Upon check-in they rush to hand you a delicious fruit infused water. The room is spacious, white, bright and clean. We had a small terrace with a slight ocean view. A complimentary bathrobe and the best hotel slippers I've ever gotten (the little things make me happy, lol) are offered during your stay. The James is super into being green, so the shampoo, conditioner and body wash is not given in your typical small hotel sized bottle. Rather a large bottle of each hangs on the wall. I don't really like this feature, as for some reason it kind of skeeves me out. It smelled very strongly of chemicals (even though it boasts being chemical free) and wasn't very good. The hotel does offer a filtered carafe of water each day, which is great. The pool is large and chairs are spaced out well, many with umbrellas and tables. At the pool and the beach you are given a small picnic basket with water bottles, apples and drink/ food menus…such a nice touch. Chairs at the beach are complimentary, but umbrellas are $20…that's South Beach. Location is great, close to Ocean and the trendy hotels on Collins. I've only eaten the food served poolside or at the beach, but both are tasty. I had the fish tacos and burger, both very good and yummy pina coladas. The hotel gym is located off of the pool and nicely equipped. The crowd at the hotel was quiet and respectful. Not a party crowd, but not an uber conservative crowd either. Mostly late 20s and older professionals with friends or couples. I've stayed at this hotel twice and both times had a great experience. Much nicer than the SLS down the street and actually a little more lux. A great stay in SoBe.

Great Value! Outstanding renovated hotel

Very nice hotel in good location, recently renovated! Very pleasant mixed crowd at hotel and really nice personnel Rooms - Very quiet, no outside noises - Our king size city view room had partial ocean view and was bigger than expected and a had a really nice bathroom - iPhone Dock Music Station - Organic body wash, shampoo, conditioner and soap Location - Located directly on the beach - In perfect walking distance to lincoln rd and collins ave if you are looking for more entertainment and shopping Beach/Pool - Very nice pool area and very helpful and nice personnel putting towels on chairs for you and serving fruit and water - Relaxing background beach club kind of music by the pool - Basket with water and fruit included in beach chair rental **we went over Memorial Day Weekend and didn't know South Beach is literally going crazy that weekend as it is called "Urban Beach Week", yet the hotel stayed very calm and relaxing and nothing could be heard of the craziness in our room.

Fun stay

I really enjoyed my stay with my 4 year old son. Location is perfect , so close to beach ,ocean drive, espanola way, Lincoln road. Staff was really friendly. Pool is opened 24 hours, and so is the gym . I was able to take my son with me every morning to workout, really fun. They give out water and apples, they were delicious. They have a restaurant called Catch, food was really good . portions on the smaller side. The only 2 negatives I had , 1) your paying $21 a day to use towels and chairs by the pool and the beach. If you want to use an umbrella by the beach that's another $19 per umbrella. So figure $21 +$19 tip ( optional but I always like to tip who ever is setting you up ) and whatever your bill is on food and drinks. You do the math. 2 nd) although the room itself is nice , it wasn't the cleanest . My son dropped some maccoroni on the floor and after the room was " cleaned" the macaroni was still there on the carpet. And thats with a tip that I left for the lady. On our 3rd day I found shattered glass by the closet doors. Thank goodness neither one of us has stepped on it. This was the 1st I had ever complained about the rooms cleanliness . When I brought to the the girls attention at the front desk, she apologized and said they would clean the floors right away.

Great location and good value

Enjoyed the location (right on the beach and walking distance to the best dining and shopping) however a bit disappointed as I was expecting the same luxury service and amenities as I have experienced at The James in NYC and Chicago. While the South Beach is sub-pad in comparison it is still a nice, clean, well situated hotel for a good value. I hope to see them step up service level if they want to be considered a luxury option.

Great staff and great location in South Beach

Enjoyed the hotel. It is large for the area. I chose for it's proximity to Lincoln Road Mall and the Ocean drive scene. Smallish but very nice and modern room. Staff was amazing - I rarely had to wait more than a couple of minutes for attention, whether inside, at the pool or beach. Service was really outstanding. Valet parking is expensive but on par with the area and it is such a great location - park the car and walk. Two pools however both are small for this size hotel and overrun by kids. Plan to relax at the beach or not at all. Beach amenities - chaairs, towels, fruit, water provided. Very attentive staff and reasonably priced menu as well. I will absolutely return again.

What a big improvement !

First stay during WMC in 2011 sucked! No free wifi and it barely worked .. To say the least I was very disappointed. Some rooms were updated and some were not. The hallway carpets were very nasty. The hotels food/bars were a joke. My girlfriend and I just spent 3nights (4/10-4/12/14) at the 'NEW' James and loved everything around it! The lobby has a new coffee bar which was amazing and a hotel operated restaurant on 2nd floor which was beautiful! I noticed a new dark wood staircase and updated furniture/decor throughout the lobby as well. The pool bar/restaurant was great and convenient as well. All of the rooms seem to have been updated and look great. Our 12th floor north facing room had a very tiny balcony but we had an awesome view of the beach. We spent 2 nights at the W in Fort Lauderdale before checking into the James and both of us LOVE the mattresses used in W hotels! lol The both of us agreeded that the king @ the James was more comfortable - I was actually super impressed and happy! The service has definitely improved from Every aspect compared to my last stay! Hotel valet were great they always got my car fast and asked if I wanted them the top down or up and usually put 2 cold waters in the cup holders. Front desk was quick at check-in and the concierge offered to tell me about events and activities when walking by .. They told us about the free hotel bikes so we went for a ride to lunch which was a lot of fun!l I will def stay here again and recommend the James to anyone looking for a beach front hotel in South Beach.
